The first time I watched it when I was a little kid so I didn't really understand it, after I got older and rewatched the movie I thought, "Thank goodness they didn't give him a long sappy drawn out death. I usually break down sobbing (figuretively) whenever a character I really liked dies. Ironically Mufasa just didn't seem that important to me.

Rarely I downright cry or weep, but every time I do get teary eyes.

It's not so much my liking of Mufasa as it is the concept of a 10 years old boy losing his father (because of his uncle murdered him.) And more essentially because the way they made the scene. Simba's too young to fully grasp the concept of death and thus tries to wake him and then calls out for help as if there was still hope. -.- And then they just show him snuggle in Mufasa's arms as if they were just sleeping. -.- It's just too sad.

I agree with D0nuts. Plus, I don't really cry at films. Only a select few.

I did a little the first time I saw the film.

I knew it was coming before I actually watched the film (I read the book before seeing it) but what got me was the way it was done, a bit like how bendaimmortal has already mentioned. It wasn't that Mufasa died; it was because Simba has lost his dad.

What also got to me was that, while Simba appears to not be quite ready to accept his father's death (still snuggling up to his body) Scar approaches him, and you can actually see the moment when the truth hits him - Scar says the line, "the king is dead" and Simba then reacts as though he's suddenly had to take it in. So I think that Scar's non-sympathetic attitude towards Simba makes it that bit sadder to watch.

Indeed. Scar even literally saying "...and without you, he'd still be alive." and throwing "what will your mother think" at his face. It's not just unsymphatetic - it's downright cruel.

As he does all this when Simba's still crying a river over his dad's body. It's worse than if Scar had just killed Simba himself and then blamed the hyenas or something. He emotionally abuses this child in every which way and then means the hyenas to tear this child to pieces immediately after. o.-

It's in all levels Simba being a child and the depth of his suffering in those moments + Scar maliciously making it all the more worse, that makes the scene so utterly sad. Not the death itself.
