Wowwowow I just got back to Victoria from Toronto (for a wedding) and I didn't think I'd get homesick that quickly but I did! I got to visit some of my family and friends from high school, and some of them are doing really well. Have you guys ever reconnected with old folks and felt insecure? Because I did for a while! Oh, hon, same here! I had a family reunion a few months ago. I was on the fence whether I should go, but I’d see the plans on Facebook for it and I decided I didn’t want to miss out. Also my cousin who lives near me begged me to go. I’m somewhat close to her, so I figured I’d spend most time with her, while reconnecting with my other relatives. Once I got down there though, it was different. My cousin would spend more time with others (in ways I couldn’t join them, in their hotel rooms for example.) The first day went well, but after that, I had trouble connecting with anyone, and missed my actual friends/home so much. I was angry at myself because I thought I’ve developed better social skills since the last reunion. No ones going to read this, but it feels good letting it out, so thanks for this. Hi everyone! Hi everyone! It's been a while. So, I saw Aladdin a month ago. Anyways, seeing the discussion about the actress chosen to play Ariel lead me to think that I could share my thoughts on Naomi Scott who was casted as Jasmine. I think Disney missed out on representing women who actually look like Jasmine, with her large nose and tan skin, something that's already considered an imperfection in the cultures that Disney referenced in Aladdin. Having a deep tan myself, I have personal experience with colourism in the Persian community. It was more subtle, in ways that I would get encouraged to wear more sunscreen, and old women would say that my only flaw was my skin. I couldn't help but notice how the light-skinned women in my family were complimented for just that. (2/?) over a year ago

It hurt, because I was very pale as a child and my skin just naturally got darker as I aged. I never truly detested the way I looked or lacked outward confidence but a small part of me would have chosen to look paler, and I was mad that I didn't have a choice in regards to my complexion. The one woman that was (sort of?) from my culture in the media, and looked like me that wasn't Hispanic, was Jasmine. And she was considered gorgeous in Aladdin. Nobody cared when I was young and innocent, but the older I got the more people took notice of my complexion. (3/?) over a year ago

And so, I found comfort in Jasmine's character, who looked so much like me, and was still considered beautiful by her community. But Naomi Scott lacks that complexion. I love her; she's a beautiful singer and actress but I thought it would've been nice to see some representation for dark-skinned Persians/Arabs/Desi chicks that aren't as adored as their light-skinned colleagues. I talked to a couple of other girls who were also teased for their complexions, and they agreed that Jasmine helped them in loving themselves. What do you think? As late of a discussion it is, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, esp. from any Disnerds who are from these ethnicities. (4/4) over a year ago

^I'm definitely not Persian, but I ain't white and pale and blonde. I liked Jasmine as she was in the original cartoon, not just for her skin color but also for her personality ( the new Naomi Scott version where she's so power hungry for ruling Agrabah totally rubs me the wrong way). I wish societies didn't push, and I mean PUSH skin color differences right up into people's faces. But it is a stupid sad fact of human existence. I am sorry that you and others were ridiculed for your bodies. That perspective "stays wrong" no matter who is promoting it. over a year ago

Thank you! Luckily progress is still being made. Why did her personality irk you, if you mind me asking? Her character knew that she was best for the job and the only thing that held her back was her sex. I understood why she was upset. over a year ago

^I just liked the original more. The remake one felt...less authentic to me. Maybe, I don't find those who gravitate to positions of authority to be exciting/ nuanced anymore. They just come across as "power hungry" to me. I preferred the Jasmine before the remake, who spoke her mind, was a spitfire, and didn't seem so interested in being a monarch. What can I say? over a year ago

In my country, colorism is very real and dark skinned women have difficulties getting married so I understand your pain. My blessings are with you but I also recommend wearing more sunscreen. over a year ago
