Chapter 17
“Who killed them?!” Koda growled.
Iah was trying to keep Koda calm; from his few encounters with this one he knew anger was Koda’s worst enemy.
“I am not sure…” he replied softly.
“How can you not know!?” he screamed, charging after Iah. He dug his fingers into Iah’s chest as they turned to claws, slamming him to the ground, his dark red eyes bored into Iah’s sending dark chills through his mind. “You know everything else but you don’t know who killed them?”
Iah cringed in pain, trying to speak.
“I do not know but…I have a feeling who may have done…it” he said through gritted teeth as Koda dug his claws in deeper.
Koda’s eyes slowly started to return to their normal color as he made himself calm down. A dark memory crept to the surface.
The dark cave, still a boy and that mysterious figure that came to him...made him a monster.
He knew who had done it.
Letting Iah go, he took slow steps towards the tree. The feelings of despair, anger, and vengeance were nearly too much for him but he tried to control it. He slumped his back on the tree trunk and sunk down to the ground, he felt so tired that he wanted sleep.
The wounds on his chest healed themselves; within a few seconds there wasn’t any mark to show he was injured. The moon spirit began to feel hopeful for the young Skinwalker as he watched the boy close his eyes.
“Are there others just like me?” Koda asked suddenly.
“Yes but none are as young as you, many of them are at least over a hundred years old,” Iah replied sitting down next to him.
“Why so old?”
At that moment, Iah could see the young boy still in Koda. Asking questions like any curious child would do.
“Years and years of anger and feelings of betrayal lead them to become what they are. They seek to destroy all those who betrayed them and anyone who gets in their way.”
Koda could see how he had become what he is even though he didn’t choose it; he would eventually become an evil monster. His family was right, he was cursed.
“I killed some kind of demon or something yesterday at a diner. What was that?” Koda asked remembering that red-haired kid.
“It was a demon; humans cannot see them. They are everywhere and prey on any innocent victim, even animals.”
“Evil counterparts of my kind,” Iah said quickly when he noticed Koda gave him a questioning look.
“They are weak but terrible creatures. They believe themselves to be superior over Skinwalkers since they were never human and if they cross paths with one…”
“They try to kill us.” Koda finished Iah’s sentence, smiling to himself when he remembered slashing that guy’s throat apart.
“That attitude won’t help you either,” Iah said suddenly.
“Huh? What attitude?”
Iah looked at him like he was a stupid child, “Yes you killed him but don’t feel proud over it.”
Koda just rolled his eyes and stared off into the distance.
The sun was starting to set behind them, making the tree cast long shadows over the dirt. A slight chill started to creep into the air giving Koda chill bumps on his arms.
Images of Nukpana flashed in his mind, he knew he had killed his family while he was in that cave in misery…with his body in agony, becoming a monster he did not choose. If he was given the choice he knew he wouldn’t have chosen this.
Of course you would, you’re a selfish and angry idiot…,he told himself.
But you have a choice not to let it control you…
Hearing Iah’s calm voice inside his mind, drowning out his negative thoughts made him feel more powerful over himself.
“How do I kill this Nukpana?” Koda asked out loud.
“Like you kill anything else,” Iah replied without looking at him.
“How do I find him?”
“You’ll know…”
Iah was in his wolf form when Koda watched him trot away into the distance.
The last time Jax was in his truck, he was drunk and had that dream of Koda murdering his family and now here he was in it again but this time hunting for Koda. He wasn’t sure how he was going to find him or where to even start but he knew he’d find him some time, there was only so far Koda could go in the desert.
He kept the truck in cruise control, keeping his foot on the gas pedal made it throb but he was growing tired as the day grew darker. Out here, there were no motels to stop at; he was flat out in the middle of nowhere. The sun stung his eyes as it sunk further down in the horizon, he nearly couldn’t see the vehicle that crashed on the side of the road. As he drove by, he noticed it looked very familiar to Bone’s truck.
In fact, it was Bone’s truck.
Slamming on the break…and sending a bolt of pain up his leg…he put the gear into reverse going back to the crashed truck.
He got out and limped over to the driver’s side thinking he was going to see a dead Bone sitting crushed in the seat, almost reminiscent to Shilah’s father’s accident.
But no one was there; the truck was empty except for broken glass, some blood and the smell of gasoline. He saw Bone’s luck charm…a piece of deer bone with feathers tied around it with leather…hanging on the rearview mirror.
He reached his arm inside, careful not cut himself on the broken glass of the window, and grabbed the charm, tucking it into his pocket for safe keeping.
Whether Bone was still alive or dead, he knew that certain someone had something to do with it and he just sealed his fate with Jax.

"Andrew? Andrew? Are you okay?" Andrew hear Elizabeth's gentle, velvety voice as his consicness returned to him. "Hey honey, you've been asleep for awhile now." She seemed very concerned, considering she had only known him for a few hours. After the room stopped spinning, Andrew sat up and looked around. He was still in the hotel, but, he didn't recognize the room. When his gaze fell on Elizabeth, the room started spinning again. "So, when you said, "When I was alive." did you mean that you're a ghost?" Elizabeth's face was grim and solemn. "Yes. I'm a ghost." Suddenly, Andrew smelled cinnamon, honey, and something he didn't recognize. "Andrew I have to go. I'll be back tonight. By the way, call me Liz." She flashed him a dazzling smile, and she was gone. "Wow."
