“I’m more excited now than on the day I signed as a player” 

Zinedine Zidane, in a light blue checked sports jacket and crisp white shirt, gave his first words Real Madrid coach after being unveiled by Florentino Pérez in this evening’s press conference at the Bernabéu. The 43-year-old made no mention to the man he is replacing, Rafa Benítez, who had been in the job since June last year as he made his acceptance speech, joined by his sons.

“First of all I would like to thank the club, and the president, for giving me the opportunity to coach this team. It is the best club in the world with the best fans. We have to do the best we possibly can so that the team can win something this season. I think that it’s all going to work out well. The important thing is we get down to work tomorrow. This is an important day for me - I\'m more excited now than I was on the day I signed as a player. I am going to put my heart and soul into this job so that everything works out well”.

Zidane will oversee his first training session with the first team squad in Valdebebas on Tuesday morning – a session which will be open to the public.
