Real Madrid and Sergio Ramos agree contract extension 

Sergio Ramos and Real Madrid have reached an agreement on a contract extension for the club captain, with just a few minor legal issues to be resolved. Next Monday, the club will stage a presentation at the Bernabéu to mark the occasion. After months of tension between club and player and the threat of an irreparable split between Ramos and the board earlier this summer, when the Sevilla-born defender told Real that he wanted to leave the side, an entente cordial has been agreed to keep the captain at the club for the foreseeable future.

Ramos has been at the Bernabéu for a decade since signing from Sevilla in the 2004-05 season and he has since become one of the symbols of the club in the modern era. During his Real career, Ramos has won three Liga titles, two Copas, the Champions League on one occasion, a Club World Cup, one European Supercup and two Spanish Supercups.

Ramos appeared to be on the verge earlier this summer of accepting an offer from Manchester United, who tabled a deal worth 11 million euros a season for five years. However, Real president Florentino Pérez sensed the decision to sell the defender would not be a popular one, as polls showed, after the departure of long-standing captain Iker Casillas to Porto. Ramos had asked that the club listen to offers for his services and felt that Pérez had failed to adhere to a promise to bump up his salary in line with the club\'s highest earners after Ramos\' intervention in Lisbon proved key to Real winning the long-coveted Décima in Lisbon last year.
