Luci Romberg Talks About Working on ‘Ghostbusters’
Luci Romberg has been busy. When she is not traveling the World as a member of the Tempest Freerunning Team, she is Melissa McCarthy’s stunt double, doubling for the actress in her last 4 films. A member of the Stuntwoman’s Association of Motion Pictures, Romberg recently doubled for McCarthy on
You have worked with Melissa McCarthy a few times now. Was there anything different this time around?
I adore Melissa and she is so much fun to work with! She is as funny off-screen as she is on. She is extremely intelligent, knows what she wants and is one of the hardest working people I know and I look up to her and respect her so much! She’s a great athlete and does a lot of her own stunts! I really think wire work is her favorite thing ever haha! On the alley sequence, she was being yanked up into the air on a wire. She did it a few times and Paul Feig got what he needed so he said moving on, but Melissa was having so much fun she said they needed to do one more just so she could fly again
The cast is pretty big. Did any of the cast members surprise you in any way?
I was surprised by how nice and down to Earth all the actors were. They were all so much fun! Their chemistry was great and we had the best time rehearsing and training them for the Times Square fight. Walter Garcia, the stunt coordinator is so good with them! They all trained so hard and picked up the choreography so well! I’m so proud and honored to have been a part of it! The first time meeting Leslie, I had to grab her breasts over and over again as part of the choreography for the fight when Melissa gets possessed. She was so funny and cool about it.
We got to do a lot of fun stuff but I’d have to say the alley sequence where Melissa tests the proton pack was the most fun. Getting slung around the alley and taking a few hard hits was awesome!
There was a lot of special effects in the film. Did you have to shoot any of the stunts differently in order to maintain the illusion of the ghost(s)?
The special effects were awesome! A part of me wishes everyone could truly see how many stunt people we had taking wrecks in every take of the Times Square fight! It was incredible! Walter Garcia (stunt coordinator) choreographed the most amazing fight sequence I’ve ever, or will ever be a part of. There were times when we had 4-6 ratchets playing at once with addition self-motivated wrecks. It was madness. I’m so proud of the stunt team for bringing Walter and Paul’s vision to life. The girls looked so badass!!
According to Paul Feig, the first cut of the movie was over 4 hours. Was there anything cut out that you are hoping to see on DVD/Blu-Ray?
To be honest it’s hard for me to know. Unless there is a stunt involved, we don’t just hang out on set. We are always training and rehearsing so the stunt team is not around for a lot of the acting stuff. If I had to say, I hope they show more of the Times Square fight. I love the edit they did but there was so much more that we did so hopefully they add to it on the DVD. Melissa did a badass punching sequence with her glove that I’d love to see more of!!
Ghostbusters will hopefully open the doors more for women in film in various roles in major blockbusters. Why do you believe this is important?
I truly feel it is the age of the woman! It is such an exciting time to be a woman! We are getting more and more opportunities to showcase our talents and show what we are capable of. Women are amazing and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us!
As you know, The Academy still does not recognize stunt coordinators. Why do you fee they should and this should be changed?
Stunt performers risk their lives every day for films. It is a well-calculated risk, but a risk nonetheless. Stunts obviously enhance the experience of the viewer so much and they are important to the production value of a film. It blows my mind that the stunt coordinator is still not recognized for their work and I hope the academy comes to their senses and recognizes the professionalism and importance of the stunt coordinator. I mean, they are in charge of the overall safety on a set and obviously, that’s critical!
What other projects do you have in the works? (We can add a link to Tru Beauty, if you want)
I would love for you to include Tru Beauty! Thank you! At the moment I have doubled Drew Barrymore a few times on her new TV show, I’ll be doubling Melissa again in her new film, Life of the Party, and I will be competing in my 12th Red Bull Art of Motion in Santorini, Greece. I’m looking forward to all of it
Because it’s hilarious, entertaining, badass, fun, and one hell of a ride! The girls are so good together and each of their unique characters shine! I absolutely love it and it has something for everyone!!
Thank you very much Luci for your time.
