It looks like Vin Diesel is pretty proud of new movie Furious 7. In fact the 47-year-old actor is so fond of the new action flick that he thinks it’s in with a strong chance of scooping the Oscar for best picture at the 2016 ceremony. Not too confident then.
Diesel, who is also a producer on the film, said he expected the film to be critically-acclaimed by all and even reckons the seventh instalment of the long-running street-racing saga will be the most popular movie Universal has ever done. Again, not too confident then.
“Universal is going to have the biggest movie in history with this movie,” said the actor. “It will probably win best picture at the Oscars, unless the Oscars don’t want to be relevant ever.” He added: “This will win best picture, “There is nothing that will ever come close to the power of this thing.”

The movie, which will hit theatres on April 3, features the final performance by the late Paul Walker, and is expected to not just beat but completely annihilate the US records for an April opening when it debuts over the Easter weekend. The film recently debuted at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, where it received a positive reaction from critics and boasts an 88% “fresh” rating on movie review site Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite Diesel’s hopes of Oscar success, no previous films from the fats paced franchise have even picked up a nomination for the prestigious award ceremony, let alone a win. But hey, a little enthusiasm never hurt anyone and there’s a first time for everything, right?
While the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rarely honours the actiongenre far outside the technical categories, Diesel continues to remain optimistic about what Furious 7 can achieve. “We were successful in one-upping the action sequences, and adding an interesting dynamic to the world,” he said. “But what the world won’t anticipate is how emotionally powerful the movie is. The head of [studio  Universal], Ron Meyer, often said when Fast 5 or Fast 6 came out, ‘If there was no number attached to these movies, they would be contenders for best picture.’ And when people see Furious 7, they are going to agree.”
After Walker passed in November 2013 when the limited-edition Porsche he was a passenger in crashed and burned into flames in Valencia, Southern California, the actor had not completed all of his scenes for the movie. Director James Wan (Saw) recruited the help of his brothers Caleb and Cody to double for Walker and reportedly used CGI to complete Paul’s unfinished scenes.

As well as Diesel and Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodiguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris and Lucas Black will all reprise their roles in the upcoming movie, while Jason Statham will play the film’s villain following a cameo at the end of 2013’s Fast & Furious 6.
