Search engine giant Google has created a doodle marking the 137th birth and 85th death anniversary of women’s rights champion Begum Rokeya.
The doodle depicts her walking in a cozy looking corridor, and carrying a book.
An ardent advocate of female education, Royeka wrote many essays, poems, short stories, and books. Sultana’s Dream, which depicts a feminist utopia, is her best known work.
The Women and Children Affairs Ministry and various other socio-cultural and political organizations are marking the day with an array of programmes, including discussions, rallies and cultural functions across the country.
The Rokeya Padak-2017 will also be distributed among recipients for their contributions to the development of women, reports UNB.
President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia have paid tribute to Begum Rokeya in separate messages.
In his message, the president said Bangladesh has been globally recognized as a role model of women empowerment.
The prime minister, in her message, said Begum Rokeya’s ideals, courage and life are the source of inspiration for women in society.
Begum Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain was born on December 9 in 1880 at Pairaband village in Rangpur. She passed away also on December 9 in 1932.
A few years after writing Sultana’s Dream, Royeka established the first school for Bengali Muslim women in Kolkata. Later, she created the Muslim Women’s Association to support women’s education and employment causes.
Royeka believed firmly in narrowing the gap in opportunities for men and women, and dedicated her entire life to the cause.
