Ryker's point of view.

I couldn’t go home. I just couldn’t make myself. I knew Sami was there, waiting, but I was worried if I got beat one more time, it would kill me. Then who would take care of Sami?
I leaned against a large building and thought. Should I at least go tell her where I was? But then He might catch me. I decided that I wouldn’t go today. That would make sure that I was alive to take care of her. Anyway, I needed to sell what was in my backpack.
I swung the backpack off of my shoulder and started to unzip it. Someone tapped me on the shoulder. I spun around, whipping the gun out of my pocket and slamming them against the building.
Then I realized who it was.
“Fawn!” I exclaimed, releasing her. “Sorry.”
She shook her head. “’S okay.” Fawn nodded at the gun in my hand. “Do you bring that to school?”
I thrust the gun into my pocket. “Bring what to school?”
“The gun.”
“Why do you care?”
“You might get in trouble.” Her large, teal eyes looked up at me worriedly. I noticed how beautiful they were, how beautiful her lips were and how her jet black hair shone in the afternoon light.
I shook myself out of it. What was I thinking? That we even had a chance? Why was I even thinking that she was beautiful?
“Who cares if I get in trouble?” I snapped, more sharply than I intended to. “I’d rather get in trouble than die!”
“Die? Why would you die?”
“Why are you so damn nosy?” I slung my backpack over my shoulder and took off down the road.
“I just want to know that you’re okay!” Fawn shouted after me.
“I just want you to leave me alone!” I shouted back.
I turned a corner and dashed down a different street, cut through someone’s yard, and ended up on a completely unfamiliar street. I slowed and started thinking.
“Why did you do that?” I muttered to myself. “You might’ve had a chance with her! You might’ve! And then you had to go and get angry! Why are you so STUPID!”
I yelled the last word as loud as I could. A few joggers who were passing by stopped and stared at me. I glared at them until they looked away.
“Ryker.” Someone said my name. A voice directly behind me.
I turned, almost pulling out my gun, until I remembered what had happened with Fawn. When I saw who it was, I was glad I hadn’t.
“Hi, Ash,” I said.
“What are you doing here?” he asked. He asked it like he thought he would never see me walking down a street in his life.
I glared at him. “I could ask you the same thing.”
He pointed at an old house surrounded by a thick grove of oak trees. “I live right down there.” He looked at me. “Now what are you doing here?”
“Walking down a street,” I said sarcastically.
He rolled his eyes. “Very funny.” Suddenly his eyes brightened and his weird smile—it looks like some kinda crazy dog—spread across his face. “We have neighbors,” he said.
“Wow,” I said, drawing out the word. “You have neighbors? I’ve never met anyone with neighbors before.”
He brushed his hair out of his sky-blue eyes. “They just moved in,” he said. “What’s with the attitude?”
I took a deep breath to calm myself down. “Sorry,” I said. “I’m kinda…I don’t know. Sorry, though. Who are your neighbors?”
He shrugged. “Not sure. Wanna go see?” He grabbed my wrist and dragged me over to a tall wood fence. I couldn’t even see over it.
“There’s a gap between the boards here,” he said, placing his eye over the gap. “You can see the whole yard.”
I knelt down and gazed through the crack. I could see a cozy-looking brick house surrounded by a small green yard. An old red car was parked in the gravel driveway.
The door of the house swung open and a girl came out. She had blond hair with dark and light streaks through it and green eyes. She looked familiar somehow.
“It’s Tonia!” Ash said excitedly.
So that’s where I had seen her. “Wow, Ash,” I said. “You neighbors are the new kids.”
“And the hottest girl in the school!”
“The hottest girl?”
“Yeah!” Ash exclaimed. Then he caught my incredulous expression. “Dude, she’s totally a babe,” he said.
I rolled my eyes. “I wonder what she would say to that.”
“She wouldn’t say anything. She’d kiss me,” Ash said.
“Then why don’t you go tell her?” I asked, smirking.
“Well, she doesn’t know me that well. I think I should wait and let her get to know me and my handsomeness.”
“Right. ‘Cause you’re really handsome.”
“Well, of course you wouldn’t think so,” Ash said, grinning. His eyes sparkled.
“Ash!” a man’s deep voice called from the old house that Ash said was his.
“What?” Ash yelled back.
“Can you come here?”
“Just a sec!” Ash took one last look through the gap, then raced towards his house. “Bye!” he shouted back at me.
I gave him a half-hearted wave.
I crouched there on the sidewalk for a few minutes after he left. I should go back and try to find Fawn, I thought. Say sorry for snapping at her and running away.
I pulled myself to my feet and headed back the way I came.
It took me a while to find the place that I had dashed off. And of course when I did, she wasn’t there anymore. It wasn’t like she had waited for me or anything.
“God, I just want to say sorry,” I muttered. “Why did you leave?”
I noticed a small puddle of oil, probably from a car, near the side of the road. A footprint, also of oil, sat in front of it, followed by three more. They were pointing towards a large white house.
Maybe that’s where Fawn lives, I thought. I ran up to the door and knocked.
Sure enough, when the door swung open, there stood Fawn. Her eyes were red, like she had been crying a little.
“Oh. It’s you,” she said. Her voice was flat and emotionless. “What do you want?”
“Hey, Fawn, I’m sorry,” I said. “I’m…I just felt like you were threatening me or something. I don’t know. It was stupid.”
Her expression softened a little. “It’s okay. I guess. Sorry for being nosy.”
I shook my head. “You weren’t being nosy. Well, maybe you were a little, but you just wanted to make sure I didn’t get in trouble.”
She smiled. “Thanks for not staying mad.” She wrapped her arms around my neck and hugged me.
“Fawn?” someone asked from behind her.
She released me, blushing fiercely.
A young man stood behind her. He had the same color hair as Fawn, but had dark brown eyes instead of Fawn’s sparkling, sea-colored ones.
He surveyed me warily. “Who’s that?”
“This is Ryker,” Fawn said, still blushing. “He’s…uh…he’s my friend.”
The man raised an eyebrow.
“Seriously! He’s just my friend!” Fawn said. Her face was crimson now.
“Right,” the man said. I could tell he didn’t believe her.
Fawn growled with annoyance and turned to me. “This is Tristan. He’s my brother.” She glared at Tristan. “And he’s way too protective.”
Tristan smiled. He did it the way I do: smirky, with the eyes not smiling at all. “Say goodbye to your boyfriend, Fawn. It’s time for dinner.”
“He’s not my boyfriend,” Fawn said hotly. She turned to me. “Bye.”
I nodded, slipped out of her house, and headed down the sidewalk.
