Episode 32: Emily & The Lightning Storm
Narrated by Michael Brandon
Song: link
Narrator: The engines on the Island Of Sodor love to do their work. But sometimes, the weather can prevent them from moving down the line. If it is windy, it can cause trees or their branches to fall onto the line. If it is snowing, the engines have to wear their snowplows, and plow the snow out of the way. Sometimes, even rain can cause problems, and flood the tracks. One morning Sir Topham Hatt spoke to Emily at Tidmouth Sheds.
Sir Topham Hatt: Some trees have blown onto parts of the mainline. You must grab a crane, a flatcar, and help Harvey move the trees off the line.
Emily: *Whistles twice* I'll try my hardest.
Narrator: Said Emily. And she went to the yards to collect her train.

Narrator: The flatcar, and strong crane were waiting in the yards. Emily gently buffered up to the crane, and was coupled on. Emily chuffed down the line with her crane, ready to assist Harvey with moving trees off the line.
Harvey is seen lifting a tree, and lowering it onto his flatcar.
Narrator: Soon, Harvey was hard at work when Emily puffed up.
Harvey: Good afternoon!
Narrator: Whistled Harvey.
Pause the song
Emily: Howdy partner!
Narrator: Smiled Emily.
Harvey: We better get rid of these trees quickly. We might have a lightning storm soon.
Narrator: Emily never experienced lightning before.
Emily: What on earth is lightning?!
Narrator: She exclaimed.
Harvey: If it strikes the ground, it can electrocute you.
Narrator: Emily puffed away nervously.
Resume the song from where you left off.
Narrator: As Emily followed Harvey to the next place, she felt very nervous.
Emily: What if I get struck by the lightning? Will it be strong enough to destroy me?!
Narrator: She thought to herself. Emily was so nervous, that she didn't pay attention to the tree in front of her. She applied her brakes, and stopped just in time.
Stop the song.
Narrator: Harvey was worried for his friend.
Harvey: Are you okay Emily? You almost crashed into that tree.
Emily: I'm sorry Harvey. I'm just feelin' nervous about that lightning you mentioned.
Harvey: There's nothing to be nervous about.
Narrator: Chuckled Harvey.
Harvey: It's very rare for lighting to hit you. You'll be just as safe as you are now.
Narrator: But Emily was still worried.

Narrator: The two puffed over Gordon's hill, and as they got closer to Maron, dark clouds loomed overhead. This made Emily worried.
Emily: Oh no! Here comes the lightning!
A streak of lighting was soon seen from one of the clouds.
Harvey: Wow, that was a bright one.
Emily: *Crying* Make it stop!! I don't wanna get electrocuted!! It might scrap me!!
Harvey: Emily, calm down! I told you you're safe. Look!
Narrator: Emily stopped crying. As the last of her tears came out of her eyes, she saw lighting striking the ground at a far distance. Then, loud thunder erupted.
Emily: Hey. This ain't bad at all.
Harvey: I told you so. It can be pretty fun to watch.
Narrator: They stopped at Maron, and saw one more lightning bolt.
Stop the song.
Harvey: Now that one had to be miles away.
Emily: How do you know how far away it is?
Harvey: Each second it takes for the thunder to be heard, determines how many miles it is. So if it occurred five seconds after the lightning strike, that means it's five miles away.
Emily: *Watches a lightning bolt* 1, 2, 3-
The thunder then let out a tremendous roar.
Emily: So that means that was 3 miles away.
Harvey: Correct.
Then, one strike of lightning hit a nearby tree. Emily and Harvey watched the tree fall onto the ground. It was heading away from them.
Emily: Whoa. Heh heh.
Harvey: *Laughing*
Emily: *Laughing*
Song (Start at 2:00): link
Narrator: Emily, and Harvey decided to refuel on coal and water while watching the lightning storm. After a few minutes, they had to go back to work, but they still enjoyed seeing the lightning together. Emily knows that lightning is dangerous, but it usually stays far away. And Emily also knows, that it can be fun to watch.
