I can’t even begin to tell you how much I appreciate the first scene in retrospect. Because the thing is these scenes happen five seasons apart without a single reference to Sheldon teaching Leonard Morse code in the interim. That’s five seasons of Sheldon remaining silent about teaching Leonard a method of communication that was meant to keep their conversations encrypted and known to them only. Five entire seasons of him keeping a secret about private messages tapped through walls, of having this shared and confidential thing between them slip quietly into the comfort and honor of their routine together.

Using Morse code literally becomes an extension of their friendship. It becomes familiar, domestic, and intimate. And no I’m not hesitant to use the word “intimate” because if exchanging encrypted goodnights through the walls of their bedrooms isn’t intimate, then what is? This is something that Sheldon keeps close to his heart, that he cherishes enough to miss whenever Leonard isn’t there to complete the circuit. And honestly, I wish we could catch a glimpse just once. I selfishly wish that we could see them just once in the evening hours, tap-tap-tapping against the walls to tell each other:

goodnight, my best friend. This intimacy is for your ears and your ears alone.
