In the months after Jim's untimely death, I remained very sad. Jim and I used to enjoy jogging together. I still enjoyed jogging, but it got lonely doing it alone. None of my other friends were interested in that. The bullying really picked up. My remaining friends would stand up for me, but that didn't stop the bullies from bullying me. Sometimes they would beat me. Many times, I would pretend I needed to use the restroom so that I could be alone to cry. One day, when I was sitting at home, I saw a pocket knife. I honestly don't know what I was thinking, if I was thinking at all, but I began making small cuts on my legs. Strangely enough, it made me forget about all my troubles for a brief period. I kept on doing it. One day, I went to school, and my friend, Chelsea, noticed that I was wearing pants. She said, "It's a pleasant day outside. Why are you wearing pants?" I said, "I just put something on. I didn't think about the weather at all." I then let out a sad sigh. She asked, "Are you okay?" I said, "I'm just fine." She said, "No, you're not." I rolled up my pants legs. She said, "Oh, my God! Aubrey, what happened?!" I said, "I fell while I was jogging." She said, "You're telling the truth, aren't you?" I said, "Chelsea, I don't lie to you." I felt so dirty, because I had lied to a friend for the first time in my life. If Jim had still been living, I could have told him about it. He would have understood. He was my best friend. However, I had only known Chelsea for a year, so I didn't trust her as much as I trusted Jim. That day, when I came home from school, my father asked, "Did you have a good day?" I said, "I guess so." He said, "You guess so?" He then noticed that I was wearing pants. He said, "You're wearing pants. Why is that?" I reluctantly showed him. He asked, "Did you fall?" I said, "Yeah, I fell." He asked, "Are you all right?" I said, "I'm fine. I'm okay." I lied again. I wasn't okay. I had not been okay since January, and it was early May. One day, when I was making another cut, my mother walked in on me. "Aubrey!" she cried. "What are you doing?!" I burst into tears. She asked, "What's going on?" I said, "Cutting myself is what's keeping me alive right now." She asked, "Why didn't you tell me about how you were feeling?" I said, "I thought you'd think I'm crazy." She hugged me and said, "I love you. You're not crazy." She began doing research on how to help me, and ways I could distract myself if I thought about cutting. I took an interest in music, and my father bought me a guitar. I started playing it, despite the fact that I never had lessons. It turned out that I had natural talent. I began writing a few songs, but there were days I still had to fight myself not to cut.

We are now in a new year. School started again today. My schoolmates have been flocking to me, asking me questions about losing my home in a fire. It became a game of a thousand questions. The one question that most of them didn't ask: Are you okay? I became fed up with it. Michael later found me sitting in the lunchroom alone. He said, "Hey. Are you okay?" I said, "You know, you're the only the third person to ask me that." He said, "Really?" I said, "Yeah. I had to get away from all the questions. It was a terrifying experience." He said, "I can imagine. You got burnt pretty...

Even though it is Christmas, things have not exactly been jolly for us. A few weeks ago, our Christmas lights had burned our house down. My aunt and uncle escaped unharmed, but I got trapped. I saw a firefighter coming to my rescue, and before I fell unconscious, I said, "Please help me." When I woke up, I was in the hospital. The doctor said, "It's good that you're awake now." I asked if my aunt and uncle were okay. The doctor said, "They're fine. They're in the waiting room right now. You gave them quite a scare, young lady." I said, "I'm not going to die, am I?" He said,...

Today was Thanksgiving, (for the United States). Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. It is a time to get together with the family without the pressure of buying gifts for them, and I like food. I helped a bit with preparing the dinner, but I mostly set the table. Grandma didn't want me to burn myself. It's happened in the past. Anyway, John managed to find his way. Whenever we would sit at the table, we would all say what we are thankful for before eating the food. We allowed John to go first, since he was new to the family. He said, "I'm thankful for my band...

I've been having quite a weekend so far. Yesterday, after school, my aunt and uncle noticed that I was still feeling a little down. They decided to take me to a hiking trail, since I enjoy nature. Everything was going well, but suddenly, I got separated from them by mistake. I tried to go back the way I came, but there were so many twists and turns, and I became increasingly confused. Pretty soon, I came across a log cabin. I said to myself, "I wonder if anyone lives there. Maybe I can get some help." I knocked on the door, but the only answer was a barking dog. I decided to...

Today at school, I had my worst day yet. I was on my way to my last class, and I overheard Kimberly talking to one of her friends. Her friend said, "I don't understand why you're friends with Grace. She's just, I don't know, so dorky." I didn't like that, but I kept quiet to see where it was going. Kimberly said, "I'm not friends with Grace, Isabella!" My eyes widened. She wasn't friends with me? Was she denying our friendship out of fear? Isabella said, "I've seen you with her, doing the friendly banter. You two do your homework together." Kimberly said, "Okay, here's the thing....

Ever since I saved Freddy's life, my schoolmates have looked at me differently. They actually respect me now. I like that I've gained respect, but I never wanted to be popular. I enjoy being around people, but I hate being the center of attention. It's awful. The popular girls even look my way now. We don't have a lot in common, but one of them seems nice enough. Her name is Kimberly. However, there might be a problem with her and my other friends, particularly Bridget. Bridget said to me today, "Grace, it's good that you're nice and friendly to everyone, but I'd watch my back...

Today at school, I had an experience I will never forget. I had just finished my lunch, and I went to throw something away. Suddenly, I heard someone shouting, "Somebody, help! My friend is choking!" I rushed to the scene. One of the kids looked up at me desperately and said, "I don't know what to do." I said, "But I do!" As I said that, I gave his friend a sharp blow between the shoulders. The boy was able to cough it up forcefully. Once he could talk again, he said, "Thank you." I said, "You're welcome. Are you okay?" He said, "Yeah." Later, I was getting ready to head home....

I am feeling much better today. I don't feel great, but I feel much better than I did a few days ago. I was able to go to school today. Michael, Sabrina, and Bridget helped me get caught up in my classes. I'm lucky to have such good friends. Of course, I did feel a bit tired after finishing my homework. I took a nap for a while. When I woke up, it was almost 6:00 pm. I didn't realize I had slept that long. When dinner time came, I ate really well. I didn't feel like eating much for the past couple of days. My appetite has returned. I think I will go to bed early tonight. I'm feeling pretty tired right now. I'm not completely better, but I'm close to it.

I missed school today, because I am sick. I picked up an upper respiratory infection as a result of my allergies to ragweed. It's the only thing I'm allergic to. Of course, of all things to be allergic to, I had to be allergic to something that's hard to avoid. I mean, ragweed pollen blooms in late August and spreads around from early September to the middle of November. How does one avoid that? Anyway, I started feeling bad yesterday, and last night, my aunt took me to the emergency room, because I had a terrible cough and sounded extremely hoarse. She said, "You could've...

Today was the first day of school. It was not a good day, or maybe it was, depending on how one looks at it. I got beat up, but I am glad that I took a beating for someone else. What happened was this. I saw some girls bullying the new girl. I walked up to the bullies and said, "Stop it! Why are you being so mean? What did this girl ever do to you?" The ring leader said, "Stay out of this, Grace! This doesn't concern you!" I said, "On the contrary, I think it does." Another one of the girls said, "She says she has Autism or some kind of enlightenment crap." I said, "That's no...

I saw The Devil Wants Peace in concert tonight. It was just as amazing as I imagined. My favorite moment in the concert was when they played "Hatred Will Get You Nowhere." I really like what John said about the song. He said, "This song is called 'Hatred Will Get You Nowhere.' I wrote this song along with Allen, Peter, and Stan. After we recorded the song, Peter said to me, 'It's a shame that we kill off our heroes and allow the evils of the world to enter.' I said, 'I agree with you, Peter.' He said, 'I'm no bloody genius. I never made anything above a B, but I think the world's...

I am currently in Chicago. I'm going to see The Devil Wants Peace in concert tomorrow. They're already in Chicago as well. This is how I know. After we got our things unpacked, my aunt, uncle, and I decided to go see what Chicago had to offer. We stopped to eat at a local restaurant. I looked over and noticed the members of The Devil Wants Peace were there. I said, "Oh, my gosh! It's The Devil Wants Peace!" My aunt suggested going over to talk to them. I said, "I don't want to bother them while they're eating." My uncle walked up to them and said, "My niece is a huge fan. She knows...

Summer Vacation has been great so far. While I've been enjoying school more since I've gained a couple of friends, it's nice to have a break from it. I also received some exciting news. On July 9, I am going to be in Chicago to see The Devil Wants Peace in concert! I was so excited when my uncle told me he was able to afford the tickets. I later told my friend, Michael, "You should have seen me when my uncle told me the good news. I was jumping up and down, crying tears of joy." Normally, I'm not that excitable, but The Devil Wants Peace is one of my favorite bands. Since I was six, I dreamed of seeing them live, and now, I can stop dreaming. This dream is becoming a reality. I don't know if I'll be lucky enough to meet them, but the fact that I'm lucky enough to see them is great.

I ran the mile in gym class today. I ran it quickly, because I wanted to get it over with. Unfortunately, I ran it more quickly than I should have. I felt awful afterwards. I was walking to my next class. Michael said, "Grace, you don't look so good. Are you okay?" I said, "No, not really." He asked what was wrong. I said, "I feel a little dizzy." The next thing I knew, I woke up in the nurse's office with Michael standing next to me, looking anxious. I said, "Oh, my God. What happened?" He said, "You fainted." I said, "I did?" The nurse said, "You did." I said, "Oh, God. How long...

Friday the 13th is associated with bad luck, but I think today, I had good luck. I have made friends with two kids in band, Michael, who plays the tuba, and Sabrina, who plays the flute. The three of us seem to get along really well. They're fans of the Beatles and The Devil Wants Peace, just like me. They're so nice, too. They were also impressed with the fact I can play multiple instruments: saxophone, guitar, bass, and piano. When it was time to go home, the saw me and said, "See you Monday, Grace!" I said, "Yeah, if not before then." They laughed. I'm glad that my luck is changing....

My birthday is normally a good day, but today was a bad birthday. It started when I was going downstairs for breakfast. Halfway down, I realized I left my glasses in my bedroom. I attempted to turn around and go back, but I lost my footing and tumbled backwards down the stairs. I didn't get hurt, but it scared the crap out of me. It scared my aunt, too. She asked if I was okay, and when I calmed down, I said that I was fine. If that wasn't bad enough, it was even worse at school. While I was doing my classwork, one of my classmates threw a paper airplane at me. It contained a nasty...

When Joanna woke up the next morning, she felt desperate for food. She stripped the bark of a nearby tree and found some insects. They were disgusting, but since it had been five days since she had eaten, Joanna didn't care. She drank from the stream to wash the taste of insects out of her mouth. She then pressed on to find her way back home. She found the steep hill where she had fallen. She struggled to climb the hill, but she managed to make it to the top. When she made it to the top, she stopped to rest. In her sleep, she had a dream about the afterlife. It was beautiful, unlike anything...

It was summer, but Joanna couldn't enjoy it. Because of her taste in music and her beliefs, she faced criticism. Not only was she being knocked down by school mates and neighbors, she was also facing criticism from her own family, save for her parents. One day, she said to herself, "I can't take it anymore. I have to run away. I doubt anyone will miss me when I'm gone." Without a second thought, she ran into the forest behind her house. For the first three days, Joanna was happy to be on her own, away from all the criticism and insults. However, on the fourth day, she began to feel a bit lonely....

One day, Joanna and Millie were hanging out at Joanna's house. Joanna's grandparents made a surprise visit. They acted friendly upon meeting Millie, but they gave Joanna a stern look when they saw the letters, "L, G, B, and T" on Millie's shirt. Oh, no. This couldn't be good. After Millie left, Joanna's grandparents simultaneously asked, "Joanna, may we see you in the kitchen?" Joanna followed them in the kitchen. That never meant anything good. Her grandfather said, "Your friend's a queer, isn't she?" Joanna said, "They don't call them queer anymore, Grandpa. Besides, Millie doesn't like to...

One day, Joanna was walking through the neighborhood. It was a cold January day, and as she was walking, she encountered some of her schoolmates. They started throwing random objects at her. She ran as fast as she could, and as she ran, she looked behind her. Unfortunately, there was a rock in front of her, and she tripped over it. She tumbled down the hill, into the frozen pond. The ice was very thin and broke beneath her weight. She could barely swim, and the ice was too thin for gripping. She cried for help, hoping someone would hear her. Just when she was about to give up, she heard Paul's...
