Lord of the Rings Question

Pippin and the Palantir

When Pippin is lying on the ground, is he dead then brought back to life when Gandalf lays his hand on his face? Notice how he doesn't even respond to his presence till the laying of the hand.
Details of his state would be great!

ScarOfTheWind said:
He was probably not actually DEAD. I think he might have been unconscious and Gandalf - being a wizard - lay his hand on his face brought him back into the world of the living quickly by magic.

Pippin was in a trance-like state, not dead. I doubt Gandalf has the power to revive the dead, or wouldn't he have used it a lot more often?
