Learn what Fitz will face as \'Marvel\'s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.\' begins its second season!
The first season finale of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” didn’t prove too kind for Agent Fitz, as he and Agent Simmons spent much of the episode trapped in a container at the bottom of the ocean.
And while the two eventually engineered an escape, Fitz’s current situation remains a mystery…until tonight, at least, when “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” returns at its new time, 9:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
While we can’t give everything away, star Iain De Caestecker spoke with Marvel.com to give at least a little hint of what’s to come for the scientifically-minded Agent in the new season.
Marvel.com: When we left off, we didn’t really see Fitz, so we haven’t gotten a chance to really see how he has reacted to everything from the finale. How much can you say about where his head’s at right now?
Iain De Caestecker: I don’t know how much I can say, really. All I can say is that at the end of the first season we don’t fully get told what exactly is wrong with Fitz, but we know something has happened to him and we know the last time we saw him he was in the water in an almost comatose state. There’s definitely something that is going to change the balance of how he fits in amongst the team.
Marvel.com: In that finale, two of the key relationships that Fitz had, both with Ward and with Simmons, changed quite dramatically. How pivotal would you say his relationship with Simmons is going to be moving forward, and what is his view of Ward right now?
Iain De Caestecker: With Simmons, they’ve got such a special bond and relationship that they can always rely on each other. They can always be with each other to support each other with whatever happens. That will always be there for both of them. Whereas with Ward, he was someone that Fitz got close to over the space of the first season. They had a troublesome relationship at the start, [but] they learned to accept what was different about each other and why that made them work well together sometimes. They needed each other and the team. After the revelation with Ward, I suppose Fitz, like everyone else, is feeling extremely betrayed. Going forward with Fitz, there’s also an element of fear--that [if] this happened right in front of them, right under their noses, it could happen again. He’s coming to terms with it, [and] I think that’s something that’s not going to be a quick process.
Marvel.com: In the first season, Fitz and Simmons seemed like they were the two characters that were the scientists. They weren’t there to be the agents, they were just doing their job and that’s what it was. Given now that S.H.I.E.L.D. as we knew it is gone and they’re now a rogue organization, how do you think Fitz feels about essentially being a criminal in some sense, or a wanted man?
Iain De Caestecker: You’re right, definitely at the start of Season 1 the idea of them going out in the field was the scariest prospect in the world. That’s not what they thought they were signing up for, at least Fitz didn’t think that’s what he’d be doing, and he wasn’t trained in it. After they went out in the field in different circumstances, they got better at it, and even though it got scarier from mission to mission they learned to cope with it a bit better. I think going forward they realize that’s a part of what they do, and they have to prepare themselves in the best way possible, whether that’s training or just being in the mindset for it.
We’ve kind of gone rogue now. Fitz is really scared by most things so of course initially the idea of change for Fitz is the scariest thing. I think we learned [in Season 1] that he is really loyal to S.H.I.E.L.D. He knows the hierarchy of it and respects that Coulson’s the boss, and he will do what Coulson says. He would put himself on the line for Coulson and the rest of the team if it came down to it. But it still is scary for him, and I think Fitz and Simmons don’t really like breaking the rules in any way. In some ways, even though they know they’re doing the right thing, they know that S.H.I.E.L.D. is breaking the rules to be able to do the right thing. So they have to come to an understanding about that.
Marvel.com: Now that you’ve had a year to play this character, what would you like to explore more with him in this second season?
Agents Fitz and Simmons with newcomer Mack
Iain De Caestecker: What we explored in the first season with Fitz a lot was the idea of bravery, and what that meant to him. People have different levels of danger and of being a hero, but it’s a relative thing. When someone does something that is really scary to them, you [might not] deem it as dangerous as something to someone else. If someone’s done something that is really out of their comfort zone, then that’s a brave thing. That’s something which was tested a lot with Fitz. I think [I’d like to see] more of the same of that. That’s when Fitz and Simmons are at their most interesting, when they’re out of their comfort zone and they’re doing things which they hadn’t expected they would be doing or prepared themselves for.
Things have changed so much that nothing can ever go back to the [way things were], but I still like the fact that he’ll be dealing a lot with the gadgets and preparing everyone for that side of it. What else would I like to see? I think it’d be cool to see Fitz pair up with someone like May. That didn’t really happen in the first season. That would be an interesting duo.

After helping to thwart Hydra, Coulson was appointed as Director and tasked with rebuilding the agency. This won’t be an easy job to accomplish with the majority of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents either killed, secretly working for Hydra or free agents. Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), expert pilot, martial artist and longtime friend, will continue to look after Coulson in the wake of the mysterious etchings he’s been carving into walls. What do these etchings mean, and can Coulson be trusted? Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, was found to be a Hydra mole and a traitor to S.H.I.E.L.D. and locked up away from the world and his former teammates. But this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him… After being left to die in the middle of the ocean by Ward, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), brilliant engineer, and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), genius bio-chemist, found a way to escape their watery grave. But all did not go well for Fitz, who was left in a coma and may never regain his full cognitive functions; a devastating blow to Simmons. And computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet), now a full-fledged S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, discovered her origins as an 0-8-4 -- an object of unknown origin – and that her parents were considered “monsters.” Could Skye have darkness lying dormant inside of her? Also joining Coulson\'s core team is Lance Hunter (Nick Blood), a dashing mercenary sharp shooter with a quick wit. Since he didn\'t rise up through the ranks, does he have an ulterior motive for helping out the team? Who can Coulson trust? From Executive Producers Joss Whedon ("Marvel\'s The Avengers," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"); Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, "Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." pilot co-writers ("Dollhouse," "Dr.Horrible\'s Sing-Along Blog"); Jeffrey Bell ("Angel," "Alias"); and Jeph Loeb ("Smallville," "Lost," "Heroes") comes Marvel\'s first TV series.
