It's not really fair because we only really know James as a teenager. We don't know much about the grown up James because he's dead, but Snape features prominently throughout the series.
It bothers me that most Harry Potter fans ignore everything that happened outside that moment.
1 - Snape was not James's victim. They had a rivalry and it's implied Snape gave as good as he got and even created the spell used against him.
2 - The entire point of Snape's worst memory wasn't that he was tormented by big bad James, but that he fucked up his friendship with Lily by calling her a mudblood. It just so happened it occurred on a day where James had the upper hand.
Honestly, I think the reason I hate Snape is more the hype surrounding him than anything he did in the books.
