My theory is that they wanted Bella to die because she resembled Blerghhh, an evil demon that destroys all life according their planet's religion, and they decided that they needed to find a way to destroy her before she could destroy all life. Therefore they kidnapped Rosalie, who hated her to begin with, and reprogrammed her in an attempt to heroically save the universe from Blerghhh's destruction. Or they just did it for the lolz.
