Paul Feig\'s Ghostbusters tracking for $40-50 million U.S. opening weekend
We're still three weeks away from the release of GHOSTBUSTERS, but the first tracking numbers are in, and THR is reporting that the Paul Feig-directed reboot is looking at a domestic opening weekend in the range of $40 to $50 million. Just for comparison's sake, that would be higher than the first weekends of Feig's SPY, THE HEAT and BRIDESMAIDS, which all opened between $26 and $39 million (and went on to gross between $110 and $169 million domestically), however those films didn't come with an estimated budget of $154 million.
Unsurprisingly, GHOSTBUSTERS is tracking best with females over the age of 25, but the movie hasn't started its final marketing push yet, and Sony still has a few weeks to try to convince the "haters" to give it a shot.
Speaking of which, Sony chief Tom Rothman recently said the controversy surrounding the reboot is "
"Are you kidding me? We’re in the national debate, thank you. Can we please get some more haters to say stupid things?"
As the saying goes, there's no such thing as bad publicity, but it's still going to be interesting to see if the backlash will have any impact on the film's performance at the box office.

I\'m sure it will open huge on opening weekend but will crash and burn on second week.
Haters of GB VG are now sexist and/or misogynist too, apparently
How can they even pretend to know how many people are going to see this movie in 3 weeks???
*ALSO* It\'s funny how all the hate for this movie is being distilled down to "sexism", when in fact it just looks like a bad movie...
Well yes, many have surmised that it\'s all part of Sony\'s cynical marketing campaign, to prop up a film that they\'re fully aware cannot stand on its own merits. Rothman\'s idiotic jibber-jabber merely confirms this.
Remember when studios used to make movies for fans. Now they\'re making them to piss fans off. No wonder why most movies suck donkey balls these days. ">

Tom Rothman? The same guy that oversaw some of the shittiest FOX movies ever? Surprised anyone put him in charge of anything.
No doubt people will see this. But I can only assume there will be a 55-65% drop of audience in the second week.
His disrespect for the fans was blamed for a lot of the bad superhero movies Fox made while he was working there and it\'s going to take them a long time to change that culture, even though he\'s gone.
That being said, Ghostbusters will probably make a lot more money then the haters think.
I\'ll see it at some point. Probably not at the theatre. I "want" it to succeed (I love seeing the franchise out there again), but it just looks like an absolute mess. The theme song was just another nail in the coffin.
... someone didn\'t learn a lesson from Fantastic Four ....
In all honesty, Fantastic Four is the exception, not the rule. Most of the time, the movies that everyone dismisses or hates on leading up to a release still go on to make a lot of money at the box office. Think of all those parody movies like "Meet the Spartans" and "Scary Movie" etc. Everyone hated on those hard leading up to release date, but they still turned a profit.
Tracking isn\'t done by polls and is usually wrong, especially with summer movies
Tracking has been VERY wrong the past few years on summer movies. Didn\'t they say Alice Through the Looking Glass would make more than the first movie? They also said Xmen and BvS would make tons more money than they did.
Tracking is just how they use a formula to take the budget and now internet views of the trailers across the web and splice it all together to come up with some insane number like $40 million. I think they can turn just a mention of the movie in the media into numbers

In reality their "data" is going to work against them because most of their numbers are from the trailers going viral and getting millions of dislikes. This movie will make maybe $20 opening weekend but that\'s about it and that\'s with high hopes. We can expect more than a 50% decrease by weekend #2 as well.
All I can say is, stick to your guns. If you think this looks bad, if you\'ve trashed it since day 1, you better not go see it. Don\'t be that hypocritical asshole who has no impulse control. If you think the movie looks good, then by all means go and see it. Let us know if you are happy with it or if you were let down. But for those who already "hate" it, don\'t see it. Just pretend like it doesn\'t exist.
