Fanpop Question

Can you set rules for a spot?

When you create a spot can you dictate rules for the other members to keep people from posting the same thing. For instance have a rule that says No Duplicate Picks. To facilitate this you have a list of Picks in the Forum so that people can check it. Also a rule like no spam videos. And if the people break the rules can we report them? I was wondering.

lol..good luck with that!

since its not your spot no you cant make rules. the f4 have the terms of service...but posting repeats isnt against them i think. but they arent needed so you can just report them. when i report a duplicate i always make sure to put the url of the original in the notes- i cant expect the f4 to search for each reported item and see if there is a duplicate on the spot.

in theory we all KNOW duplicates are silly- but people refuse to search even though we all know that link. and in my opinion you wont have people following your rules even if you post them because as harolds rule #6 states: people don't read!

Thanks for the info. That was pretty much the only rule I wanted, was for repeats and video spamming. I don't think it will be a problem. I created a forum and am keeping a log of all the picks so that maybe it will cut back on repeats.

You certainly can! But the rules you set can't be made enforceable programatically - that is, the site won't prevent duplicate picks, nor will it give you administrative powers to control behavior that breaks your rules. That said, there are plenty of clubs that create rules, though generally they are rules that are determined by a discussion of a vocal minority of the fans in that club. Some examples: link, link, link.

Each of those clubs have rules that the users have determined that govern how submissions (or a certain kind of submission) should be made. They try to abide by their own rules, but any user is free to break them within the bounds of the Fanpop terms of service. Still, having the rules laid out in advance for users to read is a great idea, and it does help in those clubs.

I think keeping a list of picks and videos is a wonderful idea. I would do it for the link club (where repeat and spam videos are commonplace), but that the lists I already maintain take so much of my time. Honestly, I'd be crazy to start another. But it's exciting to see someone else doing one, too. More power to you, and bravo for doing something to help others avoid repeats!
