Yes, making picks can help you get medals. While the exact algorithm is unknown to us users, the medals are awarded through two considerations: traffic and ratings. While users can't rate picks, picks create more traffic (page views) on the site that just about any other feature (my observation). But if you're interested in getting medals, you should probably spread out your contributions across the different features of the site. You may get a medal, it may take a while, but in the meantime, you've provided a variety of content to the other fans in that club.
