Kira knew she was very lucky. Extremely lucky. She just couldn’t express to herself just how lucky she was.
This happened three weeks ago - It was her final day at Silver Lake Animal Shelter, and she was on the Death List. The Death List was a horrific thing for dogs at Animal Shelters. The people who run the Shelters give you a week, only a week, then you’re on the Death List. But there was hope. She was going to be rescued by a teenage girl and the sexiest American White Shepherd she had ever seen.
“Kira’s on her last day?” the girl asked that day, while the American White gazed lovingly at Kira through the glass. She gazed back just the same.
“Yup,” the fat guy with the moustache, who was named Bob, replied cheerily, “then she’s off to the operating table. Ha! Away with her!” Bob laughed manically – He hated animals. He was the sort of guy who found entertainment in seeing animals die, and that’s partly the reason he took the job he had.
“Then I’ll take her. She’s a Border Collie, is that right?”
“Yes,” Bob said through gritted teeth. Damn, he thought, I was looking forward to seeing her on the table.
Reluctantly, Bob opened the pen and allowed the girl to go in and rescue Kira from her fate. The American White was thrilled, and bounded up to her. Kira looked into this dog’s eyes, and found a new emotion she had never felt before. She knew he was right. As I’ve said, Kira was extremely lucky that day. Because fate had it that she was just saved by none other than Penny and her dog Bolt.
