Bottle of Tears
[Maria's Point of View]
I could hear Bolt's whimpers and sobs as my person's father tries to realign Bolt's bones to try to make sure they knit in the right places. I just wanted to cry just by hearing him, but just to try to set a good image to Mittens and Rhino, I didn't. Cobra was trying to calm a frantic Mittens and Rhino was rolling around in his hamster ball trying to drown out Bolt's whining. A few minutes later, I heard a knock at the door at the same time that Bolt's whining finally stops.
Ryan entered the room and answered the door to reveal Penny, Bolt's person. Penny must have been told of the incident because she looked worried. As if she read my mind, Penny said, "Is Bolt okay?"
"I'm afraid not," Ryan answered, "His left hind leg was fractured, five of his ribs were broken, and he lost a lot of blood."
"Oh no!"
"I know. I'm surprised he's still alive. My dad just finished if you want to visit him; he said that Bolt needs to stay here until he can walk around on his own. Even after that, he needs to stay indoors."
"Well, how long will that take?"
"About six to eight weeks total, give or take."
"Oh. Well, is there anything I can do to help?"
"I'm not sure, but my dad would know."
"Okay. Can I see him?"
"Sure."
Penny walked into the other room to see Bolt and talk with Ryan's father about helping out with bolt's recovery. After they decided to have Penny make sure Bolt gets plenty of attention during certain procedures, she bid Bolt farewell before getting Rhino and Mittens and heading home for the night. I waited for Bolt to be the only one in that room before I walked in.
Bolt was asleep because of the pain medicine he was given. He was bandaged and even stitched up in some areas. I could see past the bandages and saw someone who did not in any way deserve to be in this position. I was about to leave when I saw Bolt shivering. I didn't want him to freeze, so I walked into the family room and grabbed a light blanket. I then carefully draped it over his body. I then ran back in there, grabbed the smallest pillow I could find, ran back into the guest room, carefully lifted his head, placed the pillow under it, and gently lowered his head. I then saw how peaceful he looked, so I decided to stay with him. I laid down just a few feet across from him. Thought, I was actually happy with seeing him, I couldn't sleep. I was being tormented with the thought of Bruce following me and wanting to make my life miserable by trying to take me back by force. I know it's too soon to tell, but I think I actually have feelings for him. Even if I didn't, I would rather die than date Bruce after what he did to my friends.
"M- Maria?" I looked up to see Bolt awake. "Are you okay?"
"Not really. I'm just worried."
"About Bruce?"
"And you. You could have died."
"At that point, I was more concerned about you guys. I didn't care what happened to me as long as you're safe." Bolt let out a yawn only to get a painful reminder of his ribs.
Just at that, I wanted to cry. I couldn't stand to see him like this. I asked him, "Bolt, Is it wrong to cry? I mean, I feel like doing it, but…" My voice trailed off at the thought of him probably laughing at me.
What Bolt said next was something I didn't expect: "Maria, there were times other than tonight when I did just that because it's not good to keep your feelings bottled up." A few tears started leaving my eyes. "Maria, you can tell me anything; I'll understand."
I nearly choked when I told him, "Ever since Bruce changed, I had to watch my friends suffer because of my poor judgment. I also ended up getting hurt when I only try to stop his wrath. When he nearly murdered Cobra, I ended things between us and thought it was all over. However, he keeps stalking me and tries to force me back to his side. When I moved, I thought he wouldn't be able to follow me, but I was wrong again." I let a few sobs leave my mouth. "I finally get to meet my hero and he nearly gets killed by my ex."
My head begins to sink into Bolt's chest as I continued sobbing. Bolt took his right paw and gently stroked my fur. "Everything's going to be alright. I won't let anything happen to you."
"I love you Bolt." My head suddenly jerked away. Why in the world did I just say that? I looked at Bolt who cocked his head to the side.
Bolt let out a sigh and said, "Maria, do you really mean that?"
I slowly nodded. "I know this sounds crazy, but you treated me like a princess and even put your life on the line to protect your friends. It may be a little soon to ask, but I want to go steady wi- No! I want to be our mate! I don't know anyone else who would risk being killed for me."
"Maria," Bolt started to say, but stopped in his tracks. He gave it some thought before saying, "I never really considered having a mate, but I have to admit that I began having feelings for you as well. Will you come closer?" I moved my head in closer to his before he whispered, "I would love to be your mate."
I then licked his cheek and lay down beside him, being careful not to hurt his ribs. Tears continued to flow from my cheek, but they weren't of sadness, but of joy. It wasn't long before we both fell asleep.
