Settling In
[Bolt's Point of View]
I had a hard trying to sleep tonight. A few days ago, I saved Penny from the torturous burn of the flames. I may not have had my powers to begin with, but I can tell you that I felt more alive than ever. Penny and I came close to dying, but I guess it wasn't our time yet. Penny spent a few days in a hospital room in order to recover from the incident; Afterwards, she was able to come home. For the first time since I was on the show, I have a real life. No longer will I have to fight off bad guys in order to protect Penny; no longer will I have to keep deceiving myself.
"Are you okay Wags?"
I turned to the source of the voice to find that it was Mittens. I answered, "Yeah, I'm fine. I'm just-"
"Excited?"
"In a way. I also feel a little awkward. I mean, you did teach me how to be a normal dog, but I feel like there's something else I'm missing."
Mittens shook her head. "Why am I not surprised?
I playfully glared at her. She knows every detail of my situation, in fact even better than I! Even before we got home, Mittens has been helping me adapt to the fact that my powers were nothing more than special effects. Our relationship was more on a brother/sister basis though. I didn't mind one bit because we just couldn't see each other as mates.
Rhino was his same ecstatic self, but I have seen him mature a little after the stage incident. Other than that, he has hardly undergone any changes.
Penny remained homeschooled and planned to become a veterinarian (probably because of us). Whatever time she doesn't commit to her schoolwork was spent on us. Her mother would often tease Penny of that by saying that we were "talking" to her. It was intended to be a joke, but in a sense, we actually do. We would often gesture something to her and she would respond as if she read our minds.
Mittens looked at me and said, "Well, I'm gonna turn in?"
"Okay," I replied, "I'll do the same in a minute."
I looked outside at the stars and thought aloud, "I finally have a real home, and a peaceful one at that. If that wasn't enough, I have a loving family and I'm surrounded by neighbors that I can trust. Can this get any better?" Those were my last words before I fell asleep where I stood…
