Hello, and welcome to my second article! I am ApplesauceDoctr, and today I shall discuss the redesigns of the Disney Princesses made earlier this year. There have been some major changes, including new hairstyles, new dresses, and of course, a ton of sparkles. How do their new designs stack up to their original DP designs? Let's find out!
I won't be evaluating these by how accurate the redesigns look to the actual character to the movie; this will evaluate how the redesign looks in comparison to the previous DP design. If that doesn't make sense, let's just begin and you'll get the hang of it. ;D
Merida won't be included in this countdown because although she lacks much resemblance to her original character, she is a new addition and we have yet to see her DP character redesigned.
10. Cinderella
Cinderella's redesign was probably the most altered of all the princesses. Her hairstyle has changed - instead of that strange updo she had originally, it looks like a more realistic bun and she has one loose strand of hair. Her dress has gone from a pale blue/light blue to a very BRIGHT shade of blue. It is accompanied by embroidery patterns on the bottom, new sleeves, and, of course, many sparkles. Sparkles can also be found on her hairband.
This "new" Cinderella, while pretty, doesn't have much resemblance to the previous design for Cinderella or even to the original character in the movie. The change of hairstyle and dress makes her quite different. In addition, her face looks a little different, particularly the eyes.
9. Mulan
Mulan also underwent some drastic changes. Her face looks really different - it just doesn't look like Mulan anymore. Her hairstyle has seemed to have gotten longer with a few loose strands of hair.
A lot has changed about her dress - there are MANY new embroidery patterns all over, and once again, many sparkles. The green sleeves have gotten longer, and the red ribbon-like accessory extends to the bottom of the dress.
This hardly looks like Mulan (from the movie) or even her previous design. So much has changed about her, from her hairstyle and face to her signature dress.
8. Pocahontas
Deary me, Pocahontas has gotten several new accessories that she doesn't look quite the same. The reason she isn't any lower is because you can still recognize her, even with these accessories. Speaking of which, let's talk about them.
I think the most obvious modification was the addition of footwear - boots, to be exact. Why Pocahontas would need boots as she's running around the forest, I haven't a clue. That's not all, though. Her dress has gotten longer and the color has slightly changed from a golden/beige color to a light beige. She now wears feathery earings and beads, and her signature blue necklace is now a golden necklace with blue jewels on it.
Her face also looks different - she doesn't look very happy with all of the accessories she has on. And given the fact that she looks quite different from her previous design, I can't blame her.
7. Ariel
Oh my goodness, what happened to her dress?! That's a great question.
Ariel didn't wear a green dress in her movie; she was seen in a blue dress and a pink ballgown, but never a green one. Her dress was probably changed so that she could have more resemblance to her mermaid form - she had a green mermaid tail, and this dress now recognizes that. Still, it isn't an accurate change. And she even has green shoes on. Ariel's hair is also different. It wasn't nearly as curly and wavy as it is now.
Thankfully, not much else has changed. Although Ariel is wearing a new dress and has a different hairstyle, she still looks like herself, which is why she isn't any lower on this list.
6. Jasmine
It's obvious Disney realized that Jasmine isn't exactly one to wear dresses. So what do they do? Make her pants look as close to a dress as possible, of course!
Jasmine's tube top and pants have gone from a pale blue/green to a bright blue/green. Most notably, though, her pants have been accompanied with a long skirt-like accessory to cover up the fact that she wears pants, and her top now has some similar sleeves.
Her hair is different. It doesn't quite have the same volume - it just looks weaker. Notice that the tip of her ponytail isn't a curl anymore; it just kind of ends. Like Cinderella, she has a loose strand of hair.
You know what I think is even worse than makig her pants look like a dress? Making Jasmine look so much younger! Her face just doesn't look the same and makes her look far younger than she did before. And that, my friends, is possibly the worst thing Disney could do.
5. Belle
Much like Ariel, Belle's hair has gotten much more curly and wavy. It looks kind of nice, but it is different from her original hairstyle. It appears as though Belle is wearing some makeup, too.
But the most obvious change is her dress - at first it was pretty yellow, but now it looks more golden. The lower part of the dress now has some embroidery in the shape of roses (which makes sense) and sparkles.
While Belle has gone under some changes, she still looks (somewhat) like herself.
4. Aurora
While I don't think Aurora's previous design even looked like her character from the movie, her redesign doesn't look too different from that previous design. Her hair seems a little glossier and yellow. Her dress has a bit of a different shade of pink, but to be quite honest, this new pink matches the pink dress she wears in the movie better than that previous pink did. And of course, there are more sparkles.
3. Snow White
Snow White...where do I begin? Well, like Aurora, her hair seems glossier and her hairband seems to have gone from red to sparkly pink. Also sparkly is her dress, which is a treasure trove of sparkles.
The torso of the dress is a brighter blue with some embroidery, and the red...thingies on the sleeves have also become pink (to match the hairband). Snow White's skirt is a far brighter yellow and, once again, has embroidery and sparkles.
I think the problem here was Snow White getting an excessive makeover of sparkles, brighter colors, and patterns. But still, she looks like herself, even with all of this excessive-ness.
2. Rapunzel
Rapunzel, being the most modern princess to have a redesign, looks almost the same. However, there are a few changes. I believe that her dress is a slightly different shade of purple than it was before, and if you couldn't notice the sparkles, then you should notice them now. The only other change was adding some embroidery to the bottom of the skirt, but besides these, Rapunzel looks almost the same.
1. Tiana
I would hardly say that Tiana's redesign looks inaccurate - the most notable change was the addition of sparkles, but it fits her really well! If I remember correctly, in the film, her green dress had plenty of sparkles, so this is not a bad change.
Tiana's dress and hairstyle practically remained untouched, and that my friends brings her to the top of this list.
Merida
While I can't judge Merida's design (this is only her first one), she was not included in this countdown. But that doesn't mean we can't talk about her!
She looks much more feminine than the title character from the movie, but even so Merida seems to fit into the lineup just fine.
From these redesigns, the addition of embroidery and sparkles are most commonly seen for all of the princesses. Some princesses have dress changes, others have new hairstyles, and still others just look like they had some plastic surgery. Are these bad changes? Not always, but they don't necessarily resemble their characters anymore. Oh well. Should Disney choose to redesign these princesses again (perhaps if Anna and Elsa join?) we'll be able to perform this countdown again. :D
Well, I thank you for reading my second article! Do you agree with any of these placements? Are there any changes you would make to the list? How do you think these princesses have changed? If you have any comments, please feel free to respond below!
