Annabethandco I think it is healthy to acknowledge that none of the Disney Princesses are perfect, as flaws make a character believable. That being said, I would dispute a few of your negative points. The Cinderella being stupid argument is something that I have seen debated before and has changed my opinions in the past. There are several reasons she would stay with the family instead of dismissing it as stupidity. For example, Cinderella is an abuse victim and barely knows a life other than that one. It may have never occured to her that leaving is an option, or she may be scared to leave. I don't think you appreciate how hard it is to stand up to an abuser ESPECIALLY IF THEY HOLD A POSITION OF POWER OVER YOU. Also, by staying with the family she receives a home, food and shelter. She is no longer gauranteed this if she stands up for herself or leaves. Secondly, I don't think Merida is selfish and "bratty" is purely circumstantial and a matter of opinion. I don't think a 16 year old not wanting to be FORCED TO MARRY A COMPLETE STRANGER is selfish. If anything, her parents are being selfish by trying to marry her off to further the cause of the kingdom. Just some thoughts. Good article.

wavesurf Hmm. I agree with Annabethanco, that each princess has her flaws. No flaws makes for a very dull character. But as for flaws, every Disney princess in the lineup makes stupid decisions. reflection11 Um I have to politely disagree with everything you said. How is Snow a "Goody two shoes" She breaks into a house and tells the people that live there how to live there lives. About the apple. The hag said it would make her wishes come true. The wishing well worked...her prince came, so by a naive 14 year old girl's logic so would this. Does it make it right? Not necessarily. Also, it appeared the woman was dying. Would you watch an old woman die? As for Aurora, I guess it's a matter of opinion. I just see a lot more personality in her. I won't go into an analysis, but I see a decent personality in her. I sort of agree on Elsa, but I see her as someone who is cautious and careful. Meh that may just be me. Cinderella isn't stupid in my opinion. She knows if she says the wrong thing, her step family will just torture her more and kick her to the streets. She stays calm and is a bit sarcastic. Her intelligence impresses me. She definitely realized her dreams before the fairygodmother came. I don't even see your point there. About Ariel, a ton of the princesses quickly fell in love. A lot of Disney heroines quickly fall in love. It doesn't bother me. It's a bit shallow, but then she falls in love with him during her 3 days on land. She made a mistake, but she's a human(Well sort of) Can you blame her? She bet on her own life( even though it didn't work out that way). Merida is not spoiled. Yes, she lives in a castle. Her whole life is controlled though and she is being forced to marry a stranger. I agree every princess has flaws, and it's good to acknowledge them, but I don't see the traits you listed fully applying to their characters. Good article though, and sorry for my long comment!

MadameLee Snow White isn't a goody too shoes. A Goody two shoes would know not to eat an apple stranger gives you. But remember Snow White has never been outside her castle walls since she was (I assume) 7 years old. So she would be clidlish and Navie. At least she's able to cook for the dwarves in echange for a place to sleep. Cinderella-she DID have a dream before the FG came. But do you have any idea what it was like before the 1970s? In a time period like Cinderella, a woman was expected to stay at home and marry. There were a few jobs avaible but not a lot. A governess, or maybe a servant in someone else's house. But you would need a connection in that house and also you need a "Character Reference" as well.

laylastepford I will try my best to not be repetitive of other comments. Snow White : What's wrong with Miss Goody Shoes? Is there something wrong with teaching little girls to be good girls? I was a goody two-shoes growing up and I rarely ever got in trouble. I highly doubt my parents are upset that I didn't cause more trouble for them. I'm sure not upset that I don't have regrets from trying to prove that I was something I'm not. Some of us girls are still good people and like to be kind. I don't see how that is a flaw? Aurora : Except the fact that she sweet and pretty, she is also very humble and honest. She is respectful to the 3 women raising her and obedient of their rules. She doesn't talk back and is very graceful. She is a romantic who dreams of being loved and falling in love. Elsa : I agree she should've learned how to control her issues from the beginning instead of letting them escalate and get worse. Cinderella : The movie starts off with Cinderella acknowledging her dreams. It's when she's about to let go of her dreams that the Fairy Godmother appears. (I literally just watched it coincidentally.) During the time of Cinderella, there wasn't much a woman could do in France on her own as previously mentioned. That's why her stepmother was trying so hard to marry off the stepsisters, women needed husbands in those days a lot more. I wouldn't think Cinderella was stupid since she was able to figure out how to get out of the locked room in time. She knew to get Bruno to scare off Lucifer so she could get out. I wouldn't say they portrayed her as brilliant or very smart but she didn't come off stupid at all. Ariel : Definitely Ariel fell for her prince fast but most of the princesses did as that was the formula of the story. Princess meets Prince + Falls in Love + Defeats Villain = Happily Ever After. The formula clearly worked like a charm too since they made many movies this way and have successfully sold lots of merchandise for it. As far as leaving her family for him though, that's not a bad message at all but an important one. When a woman gets married, her husband and most likely children are now her immediate family, not her parents and siblings anymore. In addition, I thought the little mermaid is the absolute strongest case for Disney to be ahead of the ball against racism. King Triton didn't know anything about humans other than that a small few had killed his wife and he judged them all that way and banned Ariel from speaking or going near "those people". Instead, Ariel broke down cultural barriers and refused to be limited to only her kingdom and her people. I thought it was a strong social message.
