Mulan is obviously one of, if not the most, popular princesses on Fanpop. Given, it may be unneeded for me to write an entire long, wordy, article dedicated to her awesomeness. Well, I'm writing it anyway!! Enjoy!!
If I had to pinpoint the reason Mulan is my number 1 princess, it's because she balances being relatable and admirable so well. I also love her development, relationships with the characters, and, of course, her flaws!
Relatable:
Mulan is the most relatable princess to me. She's lazy. I'm lazy. She's a klutz. I'm a klutz. We both love our family more than anything and want to please them. I can relate to how unsure she is of herself and her lack of confidence. I fail a lot. I'm not good at being like everyone else. Strangely enough, I actually share *gasp* some of her positive traits. I'd say I'm fairly creative and I'm actually pretty intelligent.Oh and I HATE getting all caked up and makeup with fancy hair-dos. Like Mulan, I can be quiet, calm, and obedient. I can be very mature at times. At other times, I'm much louder, crazier, and will stand up for my family and self. Overall I see a ton of myself and Mulan and can relate to her on so many levels.
Admirable:
Of course, I find Mulan very admirable. She is incredibly brave and selfless. Not only does she pretty much sacrifice her life for her father, she does the same for Shang in the mountain scene. She also openly tells Shan Yu (who's 3 times her size) that SHE'S the one he's after. I would be scared to death, and she throws a shoe at him. Not to mention her unbelievable ability to think on her feet and successfully execute them. She's resourceful and determined (which I will get into in a different paragraph.) I admire her physical and mental strength. Also, she is obedient and tries her best to please everyone. This alone is something I think that deserves attention. Mulan has incredible traits imo that make a VERY admirable character.
Developed:
Mulan is one of the most developed princesses imo. She starts off as a lazy cheater who's a big klutz with big talent. She's creative and intelligent, and her hearts in the right place but she can't pull it together. She was insecure and desperately wants to please her parents and bring honor to her family. She goes to war and well lets face it: she fails. It's been established: She's a fail at being a woman AND a man. Here's where she develops. She becomes determined once Shang tells her she's no good. She stops being lazy and uses her intelligence to make it to the top of the pole. She grows stronger and less clumsy and lazy. She's still a bit awkward with words and she doesn't really thinks before she acts, but she has been turned into a strong warrior. She shows her bravery at the mountain scene. When Shang finds out she's a woman and throws her in the snow, she admits she wanted to prove herself. She admits this...selfishness inside of her which is responsible and rare for a DP. Despite all of this she still makes a plan to save China. Mulan is incredibly well developed imo.
Quirks:
I love how she rights on her hand at the beginning. It shows her cheating side and her laziness. I also really love her way of feeding the chickens. It shows of her creative mind. I really like how she subtly does things her own way. Like her little strand of hair she pokes out and when she gives the doll to the girl.
Relationships with other characters:
Mulan and her dad are just amazing. They don't want each other getting hurt, and though they don't always show it, they love each other more than anything. They clearly were happy to see each other when Mulan returned. I actually think Shulan is super cute. I love how awkward they are together and how they respect each other and actually probably spent months together before even CONSIDERING dating. They are friends and are very cute. I also like Mulan's relationship with Mushu. I like how she tolerates his personality and how she doesn't doubt him because of his size once they get to know each other. I also love Mulan's relationship with the soldiers. They didn't like each other at first but she kind of warms up to them I thinks and doesn't judge them.
Role Model:
She is an incredible role model simply because she teaches girls to focus on their own strengths and that everyone can be a hero.
Nostalgia:
I'd be lying if I said I didn't love Mulan as a child. She was my second favorite after Jasmine. I loved her song and bravery.
Random:
These all don't influence my opinion on Mulan but...
She ranks 3rd on my prettiest list. I love her hair:it's perfect!! Her eyes are stunning and oh gosh I just love her looks!!
Reflection is my favorite song of all time and Lea Salonga does a fantastic job.
I love her matchmakers dress!!
Overall, Mulan is, and always will, be my favorite DP. Please comment below on your thoughts!
