In the years I've been on Fanpop, I've noticed that Ariel is one of those characters that people either 'love' or 'hate'. Honestly I'm the only person I know of who doesn't feel very strongly toward her either way. I guess I lean a tiny bit more toward the 'Ariel lovers' side because like her just fine, but I don't 'adore' her. But oh well no one is complete neutral. Anyway speaking from the perspective of semi-neutral party here is my opinion about Ariel's controversial behavior.
1. Is Ariel Stupid?
No, I don't think she's stupid. I think she made some reeeeeeeeally bad dissensions like going to an evil sea for help. But keep in mind many of the other Disney Princesses also made dumb dissensions. For example: Belle going to the west wing after Beast told her not to, Tiana kissing a talking frog who promised her money, or Merida going to a witch to change her mother. Those were all bad choices. The only difference between those and Ariel's choice to go to Ursula is Ariel ended up putting a lot more people in danger, but having said that the other DPs had no idea who would be effected by their bad choices.
2. Is Ariel Selfish?
Yes and No. All teenage girls are selfish and egocentric so she is selfish in that sense, but no more selfish than the average teenager. Also the movie 'The Little Mermaid' focuses primarily on HER fulfilling HER dream, so of course she would be thinking a great deal about HERself during that time. But remember many of the other Disney Princesses have behaved in a selfish way. For example: Merida to not wanting to get married and wanting change her mother, or Tiana completely focused on her restaurant and to the that she's loosing friends.
3. Does Ariel Care About Her Friends?
This question is kind of linked to the one above, and yes she does care about them. She does get carried away with Eric and maybe doesn't show them the all care they deserve during the movie. But she rescues Flounder from a shark and thanks him for the statue of Eric. Plus if you watch the TV series you'll see she's very loving and caring toward them. Also if you don't think she cares about them ask yourself this, why are they friends with her if she doesn't give a dang about them?
Did Ariel Learn Her Lesson?
Yes I believe she did. Even though it's not actually shown in the movie I believe she did. For one thing someone would have to be totally heartless or stupid not to feel bad about causing the damage she did, and I know from watching her she's neither of those. Also at the very end of the movie after the wedding, she and Triton appear to be on good terms so she likely apologized to him at some point.
4. Is Ariel a good role model?
No she's not. I don't think a character who is a rebellious teenager who disobeys her father is a good role model. But that doesn't mean I think she's a bad character. I think she's a very complex character but she's also very flawed which adds to her complexity.

Snow White has never been pretty to me. Princesses like Elsa, Anna, Aurora and Belle have always been beautiful to me. Snow White was the ugliest to me, the ugliest. Even uglier than princesses like Merida, Mulan, and Kida. I don't understand how they call Snow White "the fairest of all people" in the movie.
Things that make Snow White ugly:
Snow White's neck looks combined with her head.
The shape of Snow White's hair is so ugly, it's like a cotton candy that doesn't look realistic at all.
Snow White's nose is sometimes not visible
These princess eyes are scary and the pupils don't fit in her eyes.
His eyebrows are thin

Oh my god, she's so ugly except for her crimson lips and rosy cheeks! In the movie, either the mirror was broken or the movie was. Snow White is so ugly! Duh should make it to the list of the ugliest in the world!

She's gentle, kind, and clumsy and is brave enough to stand up to Clayton even when he has a gun -BB2010
I love how awkward yet interesting she is; I admire her bravery and empathy, and I like how she has a talent for drawing and curiosity for the jungle life. I love her relationship with Tarzan, one of my favorite Disney couples; her design is really pretty as well -WhiteLagoon13
Everything! She is smart, she is dedicated to her work, but I also love that her "damsel" moments are the result of her being in an unfamiliar situation, and that she learns to adjust to her new environment by the end of the movie. -Swanpride
