First Renaissance movie
First Renaissance movie
This is the fourth of a set of reviews and analyses that I will be doing on each Disney Princess movie. I will try to be as unbiased and analytical as possible. I watch the movie so that it is fresh in my mind, and review 10 categories: the princess, the prince, the couple, the villain, other characters, the plot, animation, songs, score, and mood. I then give each category a score out of 10, then the movie as a whole receives a total score out of 100. All categories contribute equally to the final score.

A beautiful, headstrong, slovesick teenager
A beautiful, headstrong, slovesick teenager
Princess – Ariel
Ariel is the first of many non-stereotypical princesses; she is often the rescuer rather than the damsel in distress. She is a brave and heroic princess, the first of many. Being a more modern teenager, she has many teenage qualities we would consider stereotypical; headstrong, stubborn, secretive, private, and determined, to name a few. She is also a misfit among the merpeople, as she is the only one with a fascination for the world above the surface. She is a free spirit, but also dreamy and childish at times. She is clever, especially under pressure, although she doesn’t give important decisions enough thought. She has an extremely animated, almost childish personality when she has no voice, and is quite dignified and mature when she does have her voice. All-round, I love her as a character, but she does have some bad qualities, so she earns a score of 8.

"I lost her once! I'm not gonna lose her again!"
"I lost her once! I'm not gonna lose her again!"
Prince – Eric
Eric is often believed to be a bland, stereotypical prince, and I will admit, he is that way when under Ursula’s curse, but I also see so much more in him. He is an extremely skilled sailor, which comes to his advantage on at least two occasions. He is fun-loving, laid-back, and loves having some bonding time with his dog. He is a helpful gentleman, and is quite kind, caring and encouraging. He is extremely heroic and brave, and it shows real devotion when he endangers himself to save Max’s life. He is a romantic, as he believes in love at first sight. He says one of my all-time favourite romantic quotes, which is “Grim, I lost her once. I’m not gonna lose her again.” He does, however, lack some depth, but he still earns a score of 8.

A couple that truly love each other
A couple that truly love each other
The Couple
Ariel seems to fall in love straight away when she sets eyes on Eric, and Eric seems obsessed with Ariel and her song after he wakes up from her rescue. Their first meeting is by chance, and it is a nice meeting, although Eric doesn’t realise it is actually his dream girl there in front of him. There is a good amount of development over the course of dinner and the tour of the kingdom, and the love definitely begins to blossom during the “Kiss the Girl” scene, after time. The relationship becomes complicated when “Vanessa” arrives, but Eric realises that he truly loves Ariel when the spell breaks. The sacrifices each are willing to make for the other shows how much they truly love each other, so they earn a score of 9.

First princess villain with their own song
First princess villain with their own song
Villain – Ursula
Just when she speaks, Ursula sounds evil. She has a good song, and is the first DP villain to have one, as far as I know (please correct me if I’m wrong here). She is strategic, clever and manipulative, with a cool but creepy lair. She is powerful, shows through her multiple transformations. As an octopus thing, she looks like a drag queen, and is much prettier as Vanessa, although no less evil. She is mad or crazy or obsessed or whatever other word you want to use, and has a controlling complex, in that she has to control everything possible. However, she monologues often, which is slightly annoying, and she unknowingly allows for her own demise by surfacing the wrecked ships. As a result for her foolishness, she earns a score of 7.

Some stand-outs, some annoying
Some stand-outs, some annoying
Other Characters
Triton – he is a beloved king, a caring father, and has a good relationship with Ariel. However, he is self-sacrificing, easily angered and emotionally punishes himself.
Flounder – a wuss or ‘guppy’ and easily scared near the beginning, he matures into a good friend who tries hard to help.
Sebastian – a good taste in music (which I like), a good adviser and supervisor, but a lousy secret keeper.
Sisters – almost unseen as characters in their own right, they just come across as sisterly, and they have to share a bathroom of sorts.
Grimsby – Eric’s personal servant and confidant, he is also the fatherly figure that Eric lacks, giving good advice when it is needed.
Scuttle – although idiotic, clumsy and just plain annoying, he can be helpful when it is needed.
Max – a clever and curious dog, he is definitely Eric’s best friend, complete with trust. He is helpful, and recognises Vanessa for who she truly is.
Carlotta – sometimes seen as a simple maid, she is a motherly figure to both Ariel and Eric.
Chef Louis – a stereotypical French man, he is almost pointless as a character.
All up, the many secondary characters earn a score of 7, as there are many standouts and some poorly developed.

Plot
The movie follows the plot of the original story for the most part, except for the cutting off of Ariel’s tongue and the happier Disney ending. The movie is full of action, especially near the end, and the stalling of the wedding is a fun scene to watch. Throughout the movie, it didn’t feel as though anything was either dragged or rushed; the movie went at a good pace. The plot therefore scores 8.

Beautiful detail above water
Beautiful detail above water
Animation
During the underwater scenes, you can actually tell that it is underwater, whether it be because of the blue hue to everything or the movement of seaweed or bubbles; the animators did a good job here. There is limited background detail underwater, but maybe this is because it’s underwater, therefore harder to see far distances. Movements are fluid, and the animation of Ariel’s hair is absolutely beautiful. There is more detail in the backgrounds when on land, perhaps again because it is easier to see long distances through air. There are some inconsistencies throughout the movie, and there are some times when the mouth movement doesn’t seem to match up with the words being spoken. As a result, animation scores 7.

"When's it my turn? Wouldn't I love, love to explore that world up above?"
"When's it my turn? Wouldn't I love, love to explore that world up above?"
Songs
Fathoms Below – good strong harmonies, but a short and interrupted song.
Daughters of Triton – a pompous tune with nice harmonies and vocalisations; however, the end is abrupt.
Part of Your World – a beautifully-sung song, and a nice song in general, it shows Ariel’s fascination with the human world and her dreams of joining it.
Part of Your World reprise 1 – a sweet and open song, leaving Ariel almost vulnerable, and shows her love for Eric.
Under the Sea – fun to listen to, but weak compared to other songs.
Poor Unfortunate Souls – the first DP villain song with pompous instrumentation and menacing lyrics. Somehow, although it is interrupted by dialogue, it feels as though it continues through this, and doesn’t feel weird when it is picked up again.
Le Poissons – establishes Chef Louis as Sebastian’s enemy, but a pointless song.
Kiss the Girl – a stereotypical-sounding love song that somehow works for the situation through the use of some good harmonies.
Part of Your World Reprise 2 – strong choral harmonies, bringing the movie to a nice end.
Overall, the songs earn a score of 7, due to some poorer songs among good ones.

Score
Throughout the movie, there are a lot of wind and brass instruments, with some mysterious-sounding strings as well. Often, the score consists of the whole orchestra, not just sections of it, which gives it a fuller sound, and makes it easier to manipulate the viewer’s emotions and attitudes (sorry, some stuff from school broke out there). There are some rare moments throughout the movie where there is no score at all, making the movie seem empty. The music on the ship for Eric’s birthday sounds like a folk tune, something you would hear in Ireland or Wales. The score helps to build and hold the tension well throughout many scenes that require that tense feeling, and the can-can-type music in the kitchen scene is fun to watch. The score for the kingdom tour is quite recognisable, while also being fun to listen to. Overall, the score is strong, and earns a score of 8.

Mood
The movie is captivating, and although I have watched it many times, I was interested for the entire movie and not bored in any part. Although I have seen the movie many times, there is still a sense of “what will happen next?” which is good construction. It is a good family movie, and not just for kids. The mood therefore earns a score of 9.

Overall, this movie is one of my favourites, and is a strong movie in its own right, earning a total score of 78 out of 100.

We've come to the big one. I hear Belle called a Mary Sue a lot, more than any other princess aside from maybe Rapunzel.

Unique traits without contacts or hair dye- No. She has brown hair and brown eyes.
An odd name- No. 'Belle' isn't that odd of a name.
Looks constantly commented on- God yes. The town literally sings an entire song about it (along with how odd she is). It's literally in the title of the movie, along with her name. 1.
Multiple characters falling for her- Yep. Beast and Gaston, plus the whole town calling her beautiful. 1.
Gets into the relationships she wants- No. Her relationship...

This is another Mary Sue test. I decided to do Elsa after Anna. I think she's accused of being a Mary Sue more (though neither of them are accused much).

Unique traits without contacts or hair dye- Platinum blonde hair isn't super common, though it can be explained by her ice powers (but it isn't made clear that's the explanation like with Rapunzel). .5

Always the hero- No. I can't remember her saving anyone aside from herself.

Hi everyone! I found this Mary Sue test someone was doing for Percy Jackson characters and really liked it. I decided it'd be fun to put Disney princesses through it, since a lot of them are accused of being Sues (though I modified the test a little, adding and removing some traits). This test is great because it isn't unnecessarily long-winded and you don't need to be the creator of the character to put them through it (though some of the traits do get repetitive). I had to remove some like "Naturally beautiful" and "Great singing voice" since that's pretty much a given for all the princesses....

Every princess changes her mind very drastically.

1- Elsa
Frozen 1: "The cold never bothered me!"
Frozen Fever: *gets sick from the cold*
Frozen 2: *freezes*

2- Rapunzel
First: "Mothers always tell the truth."
When she meets Flynn: *rebels* "Hm, I said wrong! Mom doesn't know the truth!"

3- Ariel
When the collection is destroyed: *angry, eager to prove*
At the wedding: *reconciled* "I love you so much, daddy.."

4- Tiana
At first: "Working and achieving your dreams is the most important thing"
When Facilier offers to make her dreams come true: *suddenly, Tiana changes her mind* "No, love is more important!"...

Hello! I haven't written an article for a month. But still today I will analyze Ariel. Before I begin, I must thank Genevievebarbie. Thank you very much, you wrote very nice things about me in your "meet disney princess fans" post. 🧡.

We pass to the article. As I said before, I will analyze Ariel, her behavior, appearance, etc.

Ariel is such a sweet girl, and yes, my least favorite princess, but I can't deny that she's also cute. We better start with Ariel's Appearance... Because I have very good comments about the appearance of this princess.

1- Appearance
Ariel has long red hair that ripples...

Hello everyone! Sorry the article is so late getting up this year. I was busy with the holidays, then work and then I got sick. It just seemed like one thing after another kept coming up. So again, I apologize, and at least it's up now.

Anyway, before we get started let me give you a brief run down of the Meet the DP Fans articles, in case you happen to new to the club and/or unfamiliar with them. These articles have been done in past by a few other users to showcase some of the current Disney Princess fans. Now, obviously, there are many other members in this club, besides the ones listed...

Dungeons & Dragons (or D&D for short) is a super fun tabletop roleplaying game that's been around since the 1970s but has recently gained a fair bit of popularity. I've been playing the game for around eight years at time of writing, and I strongly recommend you give it a try if you ever get the chance. It's really an absolute blast! D&D has always been one of my favorite hobbies, but within the last two years it's become an even bigger part of my life. Since I've been having so much fun with it recently, I decided it was finally time to try something I'd always wanted to do: turning...

" Punz, have you ever wondered why I don't cut your hair?"
Disney's "Tangled" was such a good movie that Tangled had great characters. Of course, my favorite was Rapunzel, but I also loved mother Gothel. It's weird that I don't like mother Gothel. Because I hated every bad guy except Audrey and Hades. Audrey and Hades had points that sounded similar and logical to me. For example, Audrey was stabbed in the back and Hades was wronged, and it was funny, so I loved them both.

I've watched Tangled about seven times, and it's only the seventh time I've come to love mother Gothel. After all, Gothel was separating Rapunzel from her family, using her, and raising...

I posted a poll two weeks ago, and the poll was like this:

"Scar vs. Dr. Facilier who is a better villain?"

And the result was Scar. In fact, the two villains have a lot of similarities. So much so that you may be surprised. However, I watched the two movies back to back and now I see the incredible similarities between them.

SIMILARITY:

1- They both want to rule a place, Facilier is New Orleans and Scar is Pride Rocks.

2- Both do their evil by using someone else, Scar is the hyenas, and Facilier is his friends on the other side.

3- Both of them died by their sidekicks. Scar was killed by hyenas,...

Look, she is pretty!
I analyzed Charlotte in my last article, and from now on I will analyze young princesses whose value has been forgotten. Today I, elsafan1010, will share with you the Megara analysis.

Characteristics
One of the things that makes Megara different from other princesses is that she is "cool". Yes, being a slave doesn't make you cool, but once you see Megara's look, it may be hard to believe that she's working for someone else. Megara is self-confident and does not trust love. Because Megara previously had problems with love life and she thinks others will break her too. Megara doesn't want any help...

Ariel blonde, so pretty! Prettier then Belle and Aurora!
My last article was about the eye colors of Disney princesses, but today I'm focusing on the hair. Ariel has red hair that no princess has ever had. Red hair looks great on Ariel, but blonde hair... It suits her better than red hair. Blonde hair pairs perfectly with her light blue eyes. Straw yellow color is the best! Here are some gifs that prove it now.

Mulan is considered a Disney princess and I find that ridiculous because if Mulan is a Disney princess why not Elsa and Anna? Mulan has the characteristics of a hero and a princess, but there is a reason that prevents her from being a princess.
Although she is friends with an emperor, that does not make her a princess. Either she would be a royal by birth, or she would marry a prince and earn the title of princess. Being a hero doesn't make a princess, does it? This is really silly. There are a lot of other female characters at Disney who do great heroics, but they're not even one step closer to being princesses. What a great injustice. What a pity. While I love Mulan, Mulan is overrated.
Om Nelle is a cute and smart nommie. Those who grew up with Om Nom in their childhood remember him. Om Nelle, the wife of Om Nom, truly deserves to be a Disney princess, as much as Mulan.
Well, Om Nelle may not be a Disney princess, but Mulan isn't actually a princess either. Her heroism made Mulan a princess, even though she had nothing to do with the royal family. Om Nelle does a lot of heroics. Just like a Mulan. Moreover, it even has a crown. A tiara with a cute blue stone. But there are a few problems. For example, this crown is actually a belt. Also, even if this was a real crown, Om Nelle has nothing to do with royalty. Om Nelle is a creature, so not a human. That's okay because Nala in The Lion King is also an animal but is considered a Disney Princess. Now the only problem is, Disney didn't create Om Nelle. So she may be a princess in her own right, but never a Disney princess. She would still make a great disney princess out of her.
I believe in love at first sight, but it sounds ridiculous and isn't exactly love. Love at first sight often happens with classic princesses:
1- Snow White
2- Cinderella
3- Ariel

These princesses fall in love the first time they see it, but that's ridiculous because you can't fall in love with someone you've just seen. Actually, that might be it, but it just depends on the prince being handsome. Snow White fell in love with her prince the moment she saw him, and that was just for the prince's appearance. That's why I don't like love at first sight in DP movies.

In Frozen, one of my favorite Disney...

So...I begin this by saying that I am an adult fan of Ariel. Impacted by The Little Mermaid from the age of 9, I am an adult collector, and I currently have Ariel ALL OVER my adult bedroom.

I commend author Liz Braswell on her "nods" to the elements found in the original 1989 film that is known world over. Some passages of the book she has written made sense to me, while other parts did not. *Eric getting a tattoo was not one of my stand-out favorite moments, and it jarred with all of the proceeding characterization given to him by the author*

I suppose, for those who didn't love Ariel's original...
