All of the Disney Princess films are works of art. Every shot of every film is literally a piece of art. In this countdown, we celebrated the gorgeous art of all of the movies and looked at one of the most under-appreciated aspects of some of our favorite childhood films.
10. Tangled
Most people agreed that the animation in Tangled is impressive and visually stunning, however, it seems those on Fanpop prefer hand-drawn animation. Most of the comments that gave a reason for why they voted out Tangled involved the fact that Tangled uses CGI animation. Many people tried to avoid the issue, but in the end, traditional animation wins over more modern techniques among those on Fanpop.
“Disney was and is like a second family to me, a second school (even better than my real school), and it would be always connected with 2d animation in my heart and mind.”- PociandSmith
“Gotta be honest here - I chose it because it's CGI, no other reason. I just prefer traditional animation.”- Mongoose09
“Aaah I think it's one of the most impressive. Sorry for some more CGI hate, I love the animation style from Tangled but I like the others better.”- dmitri_is_hot
9. Aladdin
Many felt the style in Aladdin to be too cartoony. That was really the main reason everybody voted it out. It wasn’t as smooth as other styles, and people prefer the cleaner, smoother Disney style.
“The animation here is just too cartoony and caricatured for my tastes... it's style gets a little annoying to me to be honest. Most of the other DP movies have animation styles I really like, but Aladdin's.... not so much. I like every Walt Era movie's animation far better than Aladdin's, along with the animation styles of most Renaissance films.”- AllegroGiocoso
“Definitly Aladdin...It's too cartooney for my taste, especially from Disney.”- Swanpride
“The picture used for TLM is just an awesome example of why I like it more.
I don't have anything against the animation in Aladdin, but it's just not as good.”- Flutey_Girl96
8. The Little Mermaid
I was, frankly, quite surprised this got voted out so early. People said there was nothing particularly interesting about it, and that the landscapes and underwater scenes in The Little Mermaid were very plain and lacked detail, and that it looked like it came out years, even decades, before it was released. People also said that they did not like that everything was outlined in black. People said that while, in general, it was nice, nothing stood out or made it interesting.
“The animation is not very inpressive, and it looks like it and Sleeping Beauty were released at the same time, which is not good since it came out 30 years after. The backgrounds and the foregrounds of the people/objects clashes; it looks completely seperate. The Black Cauldron has better animation, and it really lacks in comparison to the others”- Jayden-G
“The animation is pretty, but there are hardly any breathtaking moments, and I don't like the thick, black line and sometimes the characters' movements.”- BelleAnastasia
“But I chose The Little Mermaid because while its scenery on land is really nice, but the underwater scenes are ho-hum and most minor characters aren't that well drawn. Compare the minor characters (random people and fish) here and those from Sleeping Beauty and you'll see the difference. I thought they could've done a lot better with the water and the waves, they did a better job with the underwater parts in Pocahontas despite that not even being a major focus of the movie like TLM.”- AllegroGiocoso
7. Mulan
Mulan was simply too simplistic. Those who took part in the poll preferred more interesting and dynamic styles. Again, while nice, the style was not interesting enough to get any farther in the countown.
“While I love all of the DP animation styles in some way or another, I prefer the more interesting ones. Mulan's animation is very pretty and I love the soft round style of everything. It's a little too simple for my tastes though really.”- Jessikaroo
“Just kinda simple...”- jainabiener7
“Mulan impresses me with so many things. However animation is not one of them.”- BelleAnastasia
6. Sleeping Beauty
This one was a surprise to many people. Many were shocked Sleeping Beauty didn’t make the top five. Those who voted it out disliked the darker colors used and that it seemed cold. They said that the angular style looked strange and it made many of the characters look weird.
“Dark, strange, I don't agree that it is plain but the characters look weird indeed (excepts from the protagonists, animals and their families).”- PociandSmith
“Out of the Disney Princess movies definitely this one has the worst style at least for me. Never liked it, never really liked this dark, cold strange animation. Everything looks strange in this movie, colors, shapes, characters.”- tiffany88
“It's really dark and dull, plus the characters look funny.”- KataraLover
5. The Princess and the Frog
No one was especially specific about what they disliked about this style. This one was, like Mulan, just sort of simple. People said they liked the colors used, but that it wasn’t as interesting as the others.
“I don't like it that much. True, the colors are beautiful, but that's the only positive thing I can say about it.”- BelleAnastasia
“How Sleeping Beauty left and PATF is still here is beyond me.”- AllegroGiocoso
“HOW THE HELL IS THIS STILL HERE OVER SLEEPING BEAUTY?!?!?!”- Mongoose09
4. Cinderella
People said that they liked the scale of this animation and backgrounds, as well as how clean it was. However, those who voted it out, again, said that it was too simple and not interesting enough to go any further. They said it was nothing special and parts of it could be awkward at times.
“The background is beautiful, but some of the characters are drawn awkwardly at times, and it does not stand out”- Jayden-G
“The picture overall is visually pleasant but rather primitive save for the dress transformation scene and the Cinderella/Charming ball scenes.”- maryksand
“As much as I love the movie, I find nothing special about this animaion. Though I think it's great that it stayed up to this point. But it needs to go out now.”- MissAngelPaws
3. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Those who voted Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs out mainly did so because they found the animation of the top two incredible and something really special. They said that this was more primitive and not as visually interesting, and some said that the animation in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was awkward in the movements of Snow White and the animals.
“The thing I really don't like about this animation is how they make Snow White barely open her eyes”- MissAngelPaws
“It's nice and sweet, but not as good as compared to the other 2. BATB and Pocahontas just have amazing animation and great use of the colors.”- BelleAnastasia
“Snow white in my opinion deserves to win, it's by far my favorite animation! I think her face looks silly at times but it's still by far the best!”- LatinoLollipops
2. Beauty and the Beast
Those who voted out Beauty and the Beast pointed out how inconsistent it can be and often is. They also said that it was very similar to the styles of many other movies that left many rounds before it, such as The Princess and the Frog and The Little Mermaid. There were some, though, that found this style incredible, and some even said it Beauty and the Beast had the best animation ever. However, it simply couldn’t compare with the style of the winner.
“Rushed and inconsistent and the CGI is atrocious.”- Straggy
“Even though there are other films that have less eye catching animation, the animation in this movie has so many flaws that really throws you off. You cannot stop thinking about the inconsistencies once you notice them, you could tell that they had a small amount of time for animation at the studio at the time.”- Jayden-G
“BatB should have gone long ago, definitly before Sleeping Beauty and PatF, both movies with nearly flawless animation. It's generic and the few impressive scene don't make up for the overall extremly rushed animation.”- Swanpride
“*headdesk*
Really, I like classic Disney style animation, but the fact that this is still here despite the fact other identical movies were voted out, just peeves me out.
On an other note, I love SW's animation, I like the soft, painterly appearance and the graceful flow.”
“*Bangs head on desk*
I'm not fond of either animation, but at least Pocahontas's is interesting and fresh and edgy with gorgeous colour schemes. The fact that BatB is still here despite the fact it's style is identical to TLM and PatF and very similar to Aladdin, Mulan and Cinderella makes me want to slap something. It does some innovative things, but it's plain.”- Jessikaroo (I found these quite funny and couldn’t leave them out)
Pocahontas
In general, those who took part in the poll really loved this animation. While some thought it was too cold, most found it simply stunning. They said that it was an innovative style in comparison to others made by Disney, and that the colors used were fantastic. They also loved the landscapes. In general, Fanpop loves this style and it won this countdown with two-thirds of both votes and comments.
“While it's very impressive, It's much colder than the other two IMO.”- AllegroGiocoso
“BatB has the best animation ever. Pocahontas is really good, but for instance, I find John Smith's face creepy, the backgrounds beautiful but flat, etc. BatB has so much life in the animation, such a great contrast between light and darkness that it deserves the first position.”- Popcornfan
“Pocahontas is just simply unique, the best animation in my opinion. Beautiful scenes, landscapes, colors.
And the characters are perfect too, I love everything in it.”- tiffany88
10. Tangled
Most people agreed that the animation in Tangled is impressive and visually stunning, however, it seems those on Fanpop prefer hand-drawn animation. Most of the comments that gave a reason for why they voted out Tangled involved the fact that Tangled uses CGI animation.
