Could the Princess Of Pop be deposed? For the last couple of years, you\'d be forgiven for asking. Because despite Britney Spears\'s hugely successful residency in Las Vegas, the star\'s record sales took a big wobble with 2013\'s lacklustre
. And with an army of pretenders to the throne nipping at her sequinned heels - some Swift, some Grande - a new pop coronation seemed likely.
But everyone likes a comeback story. And considering her loyal following and regal status, maybe it\'s about time the 33-year-old claims her rightful place at the top of the charts with a new release. The star has been causing a buzz with all her pictures from the studio over the past few weeks, so what - and when - can we expect? After all, remember: it\'s Britney,
Album release date: It\'s coming later in 2016
Britney\'s past few albums have been brought together relatively quickly when you consider her status as a global superstar, but the Louisiana native is taking a more considered approach for album number nine.
Katy Perry\'s new album: Everything you need to know
Her Las Vegas residency means she can enjoy being a hands-on Soccer Mom without stepping away from the bright lights of the stage. This more comfortable and relaxed environment also means she has time to really plot out the next stage of her career.
"I\'m gonna do [a new album] slowly but surely," Brit told
in March 2015. "There\'s a lot going on with my kids and schools and, you know, adding new sports and stuff like that. I\'m gonna try to do my best to do an amazing album, but it\'s not my full priority right now."
Just over a year later, though, and Britney is ready to unleash #B9 into the world. Lead single \'Make Me\' was originally touted to be premiered in the middle of May. However, due to "technical difficulties" is was delayed until July 15.
The brand new music video - described as "all new, totally different and somewhat unexpected" - was filmed back in April. But it\'s not known if setbacks with that is what caused the overall delay.
So when can we expect #B9 then? Well now \'Make Me\' is finally out, the album should follow later in the year. "Britney\'s really working on a fantastic record. I\'ve heard about four or five songs that I think are just going to be big hits for her," RCA Records Executive Vice President/GM Joe Riccitelli said in May 2016.
"She\'s found a really great groove, and she\'s working with some new, young producers. We have an A&R person working on the project that\'s just really been able to thread the needle, and I\'m really excited about it… we\'re waiting for her to finish the album."
Britney Spears new songs and credits: Who has the pop princess been working with?
Britney has already been in the studio working on new music for well over a year (since September 2014 as far as we can tell), but what\'s more exciting is the amount of new songwriters and producers she has been collaborating with.
2015 single \'Pretty Girls\' with Iggy Azalea (co-written by Little Mix, no less) saw Brit get in the studio with The Invisible Men. While that single didn\'t exactly set the charts alight (No. 16 peak in the UK and No. 29 in the US), it did see Britney go back to having fun over a chewy pop hook.
But her new single \'Make Me\' is definitely more sophisticated. "It sounds big. It\'ll go off in the club, and it\'ll sound great on radio," G-Eazy - who features on the track - said in July 2016. "I just think the walls of genre have been broken down and everything is a melting pot of different influences. I guess it leans hip-hop, but it\'s just a big song."
Britney co-wrote the track with British DJ Burns. The producer has worked and toured with Calvin Harris a bit in the past, and contributed moody electro number \'Midas Touch\' to Ellie Goulding\'s
album. Britney is no stranger to an electronic banger, and this is up there as one of her most interesting forays into the genre yet. Joe Janiak and G-Eazy also have writing credits.

Then there\'s Britney\'s other new track \'Private Show\'. The track has been teased as part of a sultry commercial for her new fragrance of the same name. "\'Private Show\' is inevitably a sexy song and it promotes feeling sexy and girls feeling alive and I think that\'s fun for girls," Brit said. It\'s certain seductive, but quite possibly the most soulful we\'ve heard the American star.
So who else has Brit been in the booth with? DJ Mustard revealed last summer when said he has been in the studio with her working on "harder than hard" music. His previous credits include stuff for Rihanna, Fergie, Nelly and will.i.am, hinting at something a bit more urban for Ms. Spears. A \'Scream and Shout\' part two would do very nicely, thanks.
In July 2015, Brit was also pictured in the studio with a trio of hit-makers including producer Ian Kirkpatrick (Jason Derulo\'s \'Want To Want Me\'), and songwriters Chantal Kreviazuk (Gwen Stefani\'s \'Rich Girl\' and Kelly Clarkson\'s \'Walk Away\') and Simon Wilcox (Nick Jonas\'s \'Jealous\'). That\'s a lot of pop power in one room.
Add to the fact Brit has promised she\'s "working hard" on her new album with songwriting duo Justin Tranter and Julia Michaels - who have very recently penned songs for the likes of Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Pia Mia - it\'s a clear indication she\'s really gunning for that smash hit. Brand new song titles registered from those sessions include \'Invitation\' and \'Just Like Me\'.
to mention the fact that 2015 saw Britney team up with disco legend Giorgio Moroder for a cover of Suzanne Vega\'s \'Tom\'s Diner\'. The possibility of them teaming up for an original track for B9 could end up being the sparkliest moment of her career.
But as for the overall sound, Britney has said some very exciting things about it. "I just know that the direction I\'m going in is so good," she told
. "It\'s the best thing I\'ve done in a long time. I\'m proud of the work, and it\'s very different; it\'s not what you would think at all."
What\'s more, Britney\'s vocals are in sharp shape according to record label bosses at Sony who have heard the new music. "We at Sony music and RCA could not be more impressed or happy with Britney\'s vocals on her new single and on her entire new album," Peter Edge, CEO of RCA Music Group said. "She is singing better than she has in years."
Britney Spears world tour: Will she actually hit the road with this album?
With her Las Vegas residency contract now extending into 2017 (and some big costume and set changes planned for it), it\'s looking highly unlikely we\'ll get a world tour anytime soon.
Saying that, the upside is that Spears has a show fully mapped out, meaning that she is perfectly rehearsed and ready to go once it\'s all wrapped up. Most of the world hasn\'t seen Piece Of Me, so a reworking of the best bits with new album additions isn\'t out of the question.
Adding further fuel to the fire, Britney offered a glimmer of hope when she gave her biggest hint yet that she may leave Sin City for a few shows on the road. "Who doesn\'t love to travel?" she teased during a Twitter Q&A back in September when responding to a fan asking if "there will ever be another world tour in the future".
Whatever the case may be, it\'s an exciting time to be a Britney Spears fan. With a strong mix of collaborators and BritBrit appearing happier than ever, a return to form after a somewhat forgettable eighth album is a very real prospect.
