Dovemoon To be entire honest, I would disagree. I think Korra's character has changed through the seasons. While in the first seasons, Korra is entirely selfish and overly aggressive and she pushes the duties of the avatar aside while having the "I do what I want because I'm the avatar". But keep in mind, Korra grew up away from other people and was the center of attention where she trained because she was the avatar. Even from a young age, she knew who she was and to be quite honest became overly proud of it. But that's her flaw, and all character have them. Her training facility didn't have other people to talk to and to learn how to be polite and be socially acceptable and just how to behave. So when she leaves to Republic City, she just doesn't understand that she can't destroy parts of the town without consequences because she's never really been anywhere else but that facility/ The reason Korra in the first season would have pushed off her duties as avatar would be because all she ever focused on growing up was being the avatar and frankly, she grew sick of the "you are the avatar, master of all four elements and the world will need you one day when you are ready. Now train" thing. Another thing, the reason for the confusing love triangle and Korra's childish behavior is again because, she has never had to experience anything like it before. She didn't grow up with kids her age and dealing with people's emotions isn't exactly her thing because all she ever really did was train and learn and all the people she ever talked to where white lotus or teachers, not really giving her that "Life experience" to know how to deal with crushes and all that. The reason it came across that Korra makes herself happy before anyone else in book one is because the only person she ever had to care for was herself. Although in the first seasons Korra is most definitely far too stubborn and selfish, she most definitely has changed as a character. If you compare her in book 3 to book 1, Korra has matured and understood that her job as the avatar is to bring balance and not to just pick a side and fight the opposing side like she did with the Equalists and Non-Benders. Now, she tries to find a solution and she knows thats what to do. Although she still has that stubborn and sometimes impatience, but thats a character flaw and she will continue to be like that although she is significantly better than when we first met her character. The Legend of Korra writers are trying to write a slow arc, but an arc none the less through the 4 books. The point of it is that by book 4, Korra will have reached her full potential as the avatar. It's the same strategy they used for writing Avatar the Last Airbender. Aang started off very immature and naive and by book 4 he was mature and a fully capable avatar. While you said the writers are trying to make Korra too different from Aang, I would think a major change from Aang was needed. While there are aspects of Aang in book 3 Korra, Korra would have needed to be different. In fact, very different. If you compare all of the avatars before aang, they all had very different ideas, strategies and personalities. Then if you take into account that usually the first bending that the avatar had usually has a strong effect on the personality. So Korra's primary bending is unknown although water, earth, and fire all came naturally to her at a young age, thus summing up her personality. Fire, meaning sometimes very hot headed. Water and Earth relating to stubbornness among other things. Aang started off solely air bending, which is very peaceful. In the cycle of the avatars, Korra should have started as a water bender.Regardless, while you are right about her personality being slated towards self centered and aggressive, I think there are good qualities and major development in her personality through the seasons. You are welcome to your own opinion about the show, I'm just trying to give a bit of the other side of the argument.

Seriously, point me to an episode and quote where she deliberately and clearly takes all the credit, and I'll agree this argument holds water. Otherwise, not a compelling argument. Most of what you complain about in book one - shock of all shocks - actually happened in the first few episodes, where we see Korra in her fish-out-of-water state trying to adjust to this new way of life. It's made clear that most of her selfish actions are indeed selfish, and Korra learns from them (in the first series, anyway - I won't deny we had a bit of a regression in series 2) - she apologizes to Tenzin and resumes her training, even though she doesn't make any headway with it until the final episode of the season. She stops making fun of Asami and even befriends her, admitting she was wrong about that situation, and later again in season three when it's brought up briefly. Similar with season 2 - she messes up and trusts the wrong man, learns from that mistake and goes back to apologize to the people she had hurt, recognizes that she had a very flawed relationship with Mako that wasn't good for either of them at the time and ended it with him for those very reasons. Oh, and I take issue with this statement: 'While all of this bullshit is going on, a HUGE problem is happening in Republic City. Nonbenders are being oppressed and they are trying to start a movement that actually focuses on why non benders are not happy with their current conditions. The non benders want to be treated equal.....now isn't that a first? And naturally, when Korra finally decides that "oh right, I'm the avatar...I should do something," Korra doesn't even try to understand what these people are going through. She doesn't try to hear out what their movement is or what their causes are. Korra obstinately refuses to listen and states that the non benders are oppressing themselves. Great avatar.....-_- ' Show me one instance in which the society of Republic City is oppressive to non-benders. Not individual gangs of benders bullying non-benders, not stories like Asami's mother being killed by an individual bender - I mean an example in which the legal procedures of the City are in some way biased towards benders over non-benders. No? Because it's all a pile of crap. The problem is that the benders can do stuff the non-benders can't, and some individuals use these abilities to exploit those weaker than them. And that's something that happens in any society. The answer is not to forcibly remove this ability from every single bender against their will. Korra doesn't try to talk with them when she first comes across the movement -because that's near the start of her arch, before she has any growth. Later, though, she sticks up for the people going to an Equalist rally because they aren't doing any actual harm, and tries to defend them. She also tries to mediate between the Northern and Southern Water tribes at the beginning of Season 2, trying to prevent civil war. Could that be an example of character growth perhaps?

bakes2389 @Doveman: I appreciate your insight into the argument. I disagree to the point that I can't condone the excuse that she was confined as a valid reason for Korra's selfish nature. I understand that Korra being confined stunted her socially, or at least to an extent where Korra doesn't seem to know how to act in social situations. That's plausible. However, if her confinement prevented her from learning what is morally right and wrong, then that is a huge problem that even Bryke should have picked up on. We all have a conscience, or at least something in our gut that tells us that some of our actions don't feel right, or aren't necessarily the right choice. We can choose to ignore them, but it is still there. Korra knew damn well that her putting her desires first and deliberately cheating was wrong, yet she did it anyway. Korra ignored that conscience. And I really don't feel like life experience has anything to do with knowing right from wrong. We each know what's right and wrong, and we decide what path we choose. And I also feel like the white lotus would have taught her to be polite and socially acceptable........the avatar is supposed to be diplomatic, right? Why would that not be taught? And lastly, taking pride in a gift/ability is fine, but I don't feel like Korra's constant self-centered nature and over-bearing pride can be blamed once again on confinement. If Korra is in constant training, I can't see how her ego would be fed that excessively by the white lotus. The white lotus, at least what we saw of Iroh and Bumi, were gentle souls that believed in humility, life lessons, philosophy, and fun at times. I can't see Korra's personality flaws stemming from that sort of environment. I personally feel like it stems from Korra developing her bending at a young age, and having no one tell her not to be a precocious, bratty child that is overly self-centered. Remember when she said "I'm the avatar, deal with it," when she was a kid? Not one person, not even her parents, corrected her. She already was spewing that entitlement bullshit that young, and I personally blame her parents for over-indulging her, but I digress. And as for the destruction of property, I believe this goes with common sense. If you destroy something that doesn't belong to you, you're going to have to learn the hard way, and there will be consequences for your actions. That should be a given.

bakes2389 @tsmith: Um.....are we watching the same show? In the first episode of Book 3 when Korra is talking with the President, she states that "she" fought the giant force of pure evil. She then also discusses with Tenzin how she defeated Unalaq and handled the Unalaq crisis with the portals. She uses "I" and "I" only when referring to the issue. Where does she ever include a "we" for all of the people that help her (her crew or Jinora, or the Kataang kids)? I'm sorry, but shock of all shocks? Really? I've been complaining about every LOK episode of the first season, and pretty much every other episode as well. And even if what I am stating happens to be in the first few episodes, does being a "fresh fish out of water" justify these actions? Good God, I hope not. I'm stating that they are selfish actions......Korra acted selfish putting her own desires first and not caring who she hurt in the process. This is one of the reasons for me not caring for her character. I wouldn't say that she necessarily learned from anything. Yes she apologizes to Tenzin, but no more takes her bending seriously than she did before. She ignores everything that Tenzin says and has to have Amon unlock her bending for her. This same drama happens in season 2......she no more values or respects Tenzin as a master. She believes because she can punch air that she is a master and doesn't need him. That's a lot of regression. Korra stops making fun of Asami after Asami turns out to be the nicest person to Korra, despite all of the shit that Asami endured from this love triangle nonsense. And a good portion of Korra's kindness is some guilt.... I just have to throw that out there. As for the whole apologies thing, I'm pretty sure you already know how I feel about that. Korra's whole spiel about letting a guy come between them is more of a fandom request that the writers finally picked up on; it's horrible having a petty female lead so they had to fix that with Korrasami magical best friends thing. I honestly don't really care about this at all; I can't find their friendship even remotely feasible. I just hate how there were no repercussions for Korra's selfish act. It bothers me so much. Asami was irritated, but quickly reverted to bending over backward to help Korra. Most people wouldn't do this for someone who stabbed them in the back, and no one even chastised Korra for it, which is the huge ticker here. Yet Asami is chastised both in the show and by the fandom for getting back with Mako when he's single. This here is some double standard shit that is ridiculous. And my point is that Korra doesn't learn a lesson here; the writers just tell us that she just "does," despite us physically seeing any of it. And as for trusting her uncle......I just hate seeing the same recycled plot from the first book, and then Korra still not learning that trusting shady people isn't really the hottest idea. Feel free to take issue. The society had the United Republic Council as its governing body for Republic City. Who made up that council? It was a deliberative assembly composed of representatives from the Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, Air Nation, and both the Northern and Southern Water Tribes.. That's right....ALL BENDERS. There was not one non bender on that council. This Council discussed governing and political affairs inside the City Hall, along with acting as the commanding body of the United Forces. The Council also served as judge and jury in the case of important trials. How is that fair to any non bender? The city they live in is run and governed by multiple benders that have power over them. You can bet your ass these abilities exploited non benders weaker than benders. That happens in any society, but put yourself in an Equalist's shoes. You're gonna get pretty pissed when someone lords their bending over you, and you can't do anything but sit back and take it. And I think more Equalists were irritated when the Council decided to have a curfew and was physically forcing the non benders to do as they wished, while the benders were free to do whatever. The Equalist notion is to remove all bending and have a society that is completely equal; to them, this seems like a good idea. And Korra doesn't try to talk with them because Korra is one who relies on her bending and was actually one of the people that forced a non bender to do as she wished by using bending against them. Mako also displayed this. And the problem is that Korra is supposed to be a neutral party who works in favor of everyone. Korra immediately chose the bending side. And later, when she does attend an Equalist rally, she realizes that they are using a nonviolent tactic, which I'm sure she liked (less work for her to do). She still didn't try to understand their side. And yes, she does try to mediate between the water tribes. But again, she tries to mediate on a subject that she knows nothing about (she didn't even know about her royal uncle) and she also could have some underlying bias to the Southern Water tribe as she was born and raised there (just throwing that out there). I can't see any character growth here because she is still not fully involved in her role as avatar. She just jumps in as avatar and goes with it. And at the end of season 2, she declares the South an independent tribe and appoints her father as chief (I know it's the bloodline, but this is all sorts of Korra royalty which is just so bleh and demonstrates nepotism because she's doing the appointing but I digress). And then states that the tribes will always be allies because honestly, as avatar, she has no other choice......she's got to keep everything friendly because she's supposed to be a peacekeeper.

tsmith120 Er... cos she DID fight Unalaq, as the giant spirit thing. Pretty sure she did most of the fighting and the defeating, Jinora gave her what she needed to to win - kind of like the Lion turtle and the Guru gave Aang the tools to defeat the Fire Lord, and he still takes the credit... And it's funny, you seem to be missing the point of character development.The times Korra messes up are at the beginning of the series, giving her time to grow and learn. A few examples, perhaps? 1: She returns to her training after admitting to Tenzin that how she behaved was wrong. For the rest of the season, she continues her training, doesn't blow up any ancient training devices out of rage, and doesn't quit flat out because she's frustrated. She perseveres longer than Aang ever had to in order to get this particular element. 2: After her defeat at Amon's hands, she actually stops blindly running headlong into conflicts with him. Case in point, after he takes Tarrlock's bending and she escapes, she sees Amon and runs the other way, knowing she is in no shape to fight and would probably lose. Also, she uses her head to escape from the metal cage as is. In other words, she's being smart about the battles she fights. 3: Again with the Asami business: I don't condone cheating. What Korra and Mako did was wrong, and they do pay for it in the episode. Korra's friendship with both Mako and Bolin is thrown into jeopardy as are their chances at the pro-bending title, until Korra and Mako put it behind them and Bo forgives them. Even then, Mako's relationship with Asami is broken because of it - but Asami doesn't blame Korra, because at the time they hardly knew one another and Mako was the one who really betrayed her. Even so, Korra doesn't get together with Mako until the end, AFTER he had broken up with Asami (we don't know how long they had been broken up, either) and at no point does she make a move on him for the rest of the time he and Asami are together. Again, I point you to the scene where she tells him to be with Asami while he was apologizing for not believing her rather than 'take advantage' of the moment. That's character growth. Side note - I don't find Asami and Korra's relationship unfeasible. Asami is a nice person and Korra, while working on the 'nice', is still upbeat and seems like fun to be around. I'd be both their friends in an instant, and I can't think of a reasonable reason they wouldn't be friends with each other. All benders? Don't remember hearing anything about the whole council having to be made up entirely of benders - Tenzin, sure, he's a member of the Air Nation and they're always benders. I know Tarrlok and the Fire Nation lady were as well, but that never seems to be the issue - nor what the Equalists are fighting for (Oh, and one of the earliest council members was Sokka, the ultimate non-bender js js). The Equalist movement isn't one about giving equal social rights to the non-benders, because there are none to be given. The President gets elected when people realise the Council is a politically flawed structure, but again - not what the Equalists led by Amon are fighting for. Amon, it transpires, wants to take down the Avatar and rule Republic City, but the Equalists he leads believe that the natural abilities the benders are born with are unfair and need to be removed, by force if necessay. This is a twisted ethic, manipulated by a charismatic mastermind who seeks to use the non-benders' fears as his own personal tool. Korra sides with the benders to begin with (though she sides against the hardline approach towards non-benders Tarrlock advocates) because her first major interaction with them involved them kidnapping her friend and trying to forcibly remove his bending, as well as the fact that Amon makes it clear the war is being waged against her. Korra does what the Avatar is meant to - she goes against the extremes of both sides and fights for the freedoms of both benders and non-benders who are not trying to wage a war with each other. Korra fights the equalists that opened the hostilities, and then fights Tarrlock when he makes them worse. And even though she doesn't know everything about the matter (because secrets are kept from her, not because she's choosing to remain ignorant) she is still meant to keep hostilities to a minimum, again because she doesn't want civil war to break out. In other words, doing her duty as the Avatar and trying her best to overcome the personal bias she has towards her home - so she COULD have underlying bias, but doesn't act upon it because she's putting her duty above her feelings. Huh, kind of contradicts with what you were saying about how she always puts herself above everyone else. You say she's not fully involved in her role - erm, how exactly? Pretty much everything she does, particularly now, she seems to think 'I'm the Avatar, if I'm not doing this right there's something wrong with me'. Her heart, believe it or not, is actually in the right place - she wants to do the best job she can as the Avatar. She still struggles with her reckless nature every now and then and her hot temper, but the actions she takes are the ones she believes to be the right ones. Oh, a couple other things that I think show that she HAS developed as a character: She doesn't go after personal glory any more, as she did with the pro-bending (which, you may note, she quit and focused on her air bending training), or putting her own desires above those of others as she did with the Mako incident in Season one. She listens to Tenzin's advice and seems to value it greatly, when she full on rejected him at the beginning of season two she has since apologized and behaved very differently around him, showing respect and trusting him with the doubts she has about her actions. There has been a fair amount of change with her character. She hasn't done a complete 180 (and I think that's a good thing, personally) and I'll admit there was a lot of regression in the first half of season 2, but since getting her memories back after her amnesia in particular, I've found her to be very likable and a perfectly fine protagonist.

Korra takes credit for everything and does not once credit those who aided her in the fight. Aang at least gave his team the credit where it was due, and Aang used his elemental power to defeat Ozai (not a character's spiritual glow bullshit as a weapon). These are two completely different instances that should not be compared. I stated that she apologized. I don't find that as growth. She apologized for acting like an asshole to Tenzin. That's what she should have done after the fact in the beginning. And yes, she does train, but if you recall, she cannot master air bending because she lacks the capacity to focus on the element. Amon has to unlock it for her. And then in season 2, the first episode I believe, she continues to abuse her bending abilities. She goes into the avatar state to WIN A FUCKING CHILD'S RACE. But this goes back to my point of her being immature. She also acts as if she is a master over an element that she technically did not learn. Her enemy gave it to her by accident. And no, Korra never stops blindly running from conflicts. Korra still runs blindly toward conflict. I will admit that she is somewhat working on this. However, look at her running towards Tarrlok, then in season 2 she runs toward more conflict after her breakup with Mako (by going off by herself) and charging at Eska and Desna when they attack rather than just fleeing, she blindly follows her uncle which leads to a multitude of conflict, and she runs toward the fight with her uncle at the end, and in book 3, she has run towards Zaheer when he attacked in Zhao Fu, then again in the spirit world, and from the preview for the finale, it looks like she'll be doing it again. Did anyone really pay for what happened? Mako barely got a lecture from Asami, and Bo immediately forgave him. And let's see, Korra's friendships were in jeopardy, but Bo and Asami both instantly forgave her, and she was rewarded with Mako in the end. There are no repercussions. And as for that scene where Korra "selflessly" tells Mako to go.......yeah, this scene is some straight up bullshit. It is not Korra's place to go tell Mako to go be with his gf. Mako can do whatever he wants, but I just love how he has to look for Korra's approval to go be with Asami. He, the dumbass that he is, clearly didn't get that he should be comforting Asami (and apologizing to her/kissing her ass for being a major douche), not be apologizing to the girl he's cheating with/hanging around with her after that sort of intimacy between the two of them was brewing and he's still in a relationship. But again, this whole Makorra arc is just horrid in every way possible. You can look up the council. When it was formed, Sokka and other non benders made up the council with benders, but during the time of LOK, the council is made up of all benders. And the Equalist movement was for EQUALITY for non benders. They wanted to be treated the same as benders, who in Republic City at least, had more advantages over the non benders. Amon wants to rule, which is his agenda. BUT, if you look at how he was using the movement, he was using their mistreatment as a fuel for his plans. The Equalist movement is about NONBENDER INEQUALITY. And Amon fed off of that so he could take over. And I'm not saying that Korra isn't doing her job as avatar here. I'm stating that Korra abused her power as a bender during this movement, and so did Mako. And she even sided with the benders originally. And this is why a good portion of the equalists were irritated with her and why Amon's movement was strengthened. Oh yes, let's blame secrets kept from her as a reason why she is ignorant in tribe matters. Korra is from the tribe, so this is another area where the writing is lacking. Korra would be privy to some information as to who is ruling her tribe. And she would be aware of some issues going on. And the funny thing is, that Korra once again TAKES SIDES, and blindly follows her uncle (oh look, a reoccurring theme). And in the process of Korra going off with her uncle, Korra in all technicalities, inadvertently fuels the civil war. Korra is one avatar that creates more problems and conflicts than she does good, even if it inadvertent. It's insane, really. Oh yes, I'm contradicting myself with that. Korra put her own selfish desire of SPIRITUAL BENDING first and blindly follows her uncle because she was OFFENDED that Tenzin and her dad kept her in a training camp (for her own good), and her dad kept secrets from her about his jaded past (because again, it is his business and Korra doesn't need to know about his banishment. Not to mention, he's probably embarrassed and ashamed. He doesn't want his kid to think of him as a fuck up. There's a reason it is a secret). Yep.....she put herself first here. I know you will try to argue back that she was learning spiritual bending because of the dark spirits, which is true, but Korra also had her own hidden agenda here (Korra was sick of air bending and wanted to try something new)....putting herself and her new training above the real problems that the people face. And by her still doing what she WANTS to do over what she NEEDS to do, she is not fully involved in her role as avatar. And I'm not saying that her heart isn't in the right place, and I know her actions are what she believes to be right. The problem is that they are not always right, but no one can talk to her nor help guide her because Korra is too stubborn and hot tempered to listen and she does whatever she wants anyway (without really consulting anyone else nor thinking of future repercussions). And that's totally fine if you like Korra as a protagonist. You are entitled to your opinion, as I am to mine. I don't care for her as a protagonist. I personally feel like her character is a tad better after the amnesia thing, but again......that was a half ass plot filler to make her more likable for the fandom. That's a cop out writing ploy if I ever saw one.

tsmith120 Actually, Aang used a combination of the Avatar state and the energy bending given to him by Guru and the Lion Turtle respectively. Korra doesn't take a load of glory over it, she just angrily points out the part that she played (which, like it or not, was the biggest role in Unalaq's downfall) when she is being criticized for how she handled the situation. Yeah, she should have apologized to begin with, she shouldn't have said the things she said - she realizes this and then actually DOES apologize. She goes from a place of being an unwilling student that's wanting to throw in the towel to a student who is prepared to stick with her training as long as it takes even though she isn't making any more progress with it. And Korra using the Avatar state to win a race? So what, she's having fun with her abilities, that doesn't make her immature. Thinking that you're 'too old' or 'too mature' for putting your time and talents into playing games is a mark of true immaturity - in my humble opinion. Also, however she learned air bending makes no difference - her point is she can do it now. But yeah, she acts over confident back at the start of season 2, it's a regression and I wasn't a fan. We can agree on that much, at least. My point about Korra and conflict was more that she had been beaten by Amon before, knew his abilities were beyond her understanding and she lets go of the need to try and prove herself by fighting him, which she had earlier on in the series. In all these other conflicts, being the Avatar, she has been the one whose duty it is to fight these battles. She doesn't do it to prove anything to herself or to squash any feelings of fear, she does it because it's kind of her job and she won't shy away from it (also, she's been trained from a young age to master the elements and is pretty damn good at fighting, she should be able to handle most conflicts unless there's something else she doesn't know about). Mako barely got a lecture from Asami... Yeah, she ended things with him. That's paying for screwing up, in my eyes anyway. They don't dwell on the negative repercussions of the act, and Asami and Bo DO forgive her - but that's because a) They're not the sort of people to hold grudges and b) Korra never does anything of the sort again, indicating that she has learned something from the experience and so it would be pointless to hold it over her head for any reason other than petty revenge - which is beneath both of them. And yeah, Korra tells Mako to be with Asami - after she has spent a fair amount of time with both him and Asami accusing her of lying about Mr Sato's involvement with the Equalists, calling her a liar. And then, while Mako is in the midst of apologizing - as he should be - she tells him he should be with Asami. What Mako does and doesn't do is up to him, but Korra advising him to treat his girlfriend well? That's not bullshit, that's being a friend. I did look up the council, my point was that there doesn't seem to be (within the show) any indication that benders are therefore some sort of higher class. I point you in the direction of Cabbage Corp. and Asami and her father - high standing members within the society who are not benders. Meanwhile characters like Bolin and Mako, despite being benders, grew up on the streets. There is no indication that being a non-bender prevents you from doing any job or being anything unless they are physically unable to do it. Amon, like I said, was a master manipulator - taking things like the shadiness of the final in the pro-bending tournament and applying it to the whole of society, implying everyone involved in it must be unfair and corrupt because a select few are. And if all the Equalists want is equality between benders and non-benders, why are they employing violent tactics to forcibly remove bending from individuals regardless of what they have done with the ability? Because what they want is for everyone to be non-benders. That's the 'equality' that we see being pushed in the series - making everyone else like them. Their methods are extreme, their goals skewed and misguided and their arguments always involve taking the acts of individual benders and basically saying 'this means bending is evil!' She sided with the benders to begin with - would that be because the Equalists were actively hostile towards her, kidnapped her friend and a number of others, acted outside the law and started the war within the city? Or not? Erm... let's blame the secrets for the fact that Korra was ignorant of their information because they were kept secret? Yeah, why not? Korra does her best to mediate between the struggles without allowing hostilities to begin in the first place, is my point - she doesn't just flip her lid at the passers by because they won't cooperate and try to stop them by force, because she recognizes that this won't solve anything. You say Korra puts herself and her new training above the real problems the people face... Except she was going with the training that - as far as she (and indeed anyone else) could tell - would best help with these problems. I love Tenzin, but this is actually an area I think he was in the wrong (to an extent, didn't like Korra's treatment of him at all). See, the dark spirits were a new threat that had arisen, something the Avatar is really expected to deal with - and Tenzin's best solution is to carry on Korra's training as if there was no change, whereas Unalaq offers a solution to the problem (and to be fair, he's a well respected leader and her uncle to boot, AND he saved them all from that spirit - she has no reason NOT to trust him aside from his design and some mood lighting, which isn't a great in-world argument). Korra's reasons are a mixture of moral and selfish reasons, it's true - but that's true of a lot of peoples motivation in real life. The funny thing is, doing the right thing isn't ALWAYS against what we want to do, it's not as easy as that, and while Korra's decision ultimately backfired, I don't know that going with Tenzin would necessarily have been the better solution. And to that final point - yeah, that's her major failing as a character, not helped by the fact that the people around her are either as stubborn as she is (ie Lin and Tenzin) or kind of pushovers (eg Bolin) and that either leads to her getting more annoyed and digging her heels in the sand, or just going ahead because no one will say a word against it. But, she is improving and I am pretty sure by the end of the whole thing we'll see a very different Korra to the one we saw at the beginning of season one. FINAL final point - you know, I can't argue that I liked the amnesia. I didn't. But the reason I didn't like it is that they had a perfectly good reason for her to have a personality change without having to add the loss of memory. In my mind, the cause of the change wasn't losing and regaining her memory - though that may have been a factor. I like to think that watching Wan's story put her own life and actions into perspective and made her realize she hadn't been behaving well to the people close to her (because that's actually the thing about her that changes at that particular point). Or maybe a bit of Wan's personality rubbed off on her because she had spent so much time watching his life.

bakes2389 I'm pointing out the fact that she never acknowledges the help she receives. That's all I'm saying. She doesn't acknowledge it, and it's getting old. Give credit where credit is due. Again, I don't see apologies as growth. Just because you are sorry for an action, doesn't necessarily mean you will never not do it again in the future. And season 2 was Korra reverting back to her old self and being unwilling to stick with Tenzin because spirit bending was more appealing to her. And quite frankly, I find using the avatar state as a way to win a children's race is immature and ABUSES the abilities of the avatar. Did Aang ever use the avatar state to win a silly race? Nope. Did Roku use the avatar state to win a game? Nope. Have some respect for the avatar state and its purpose. It is a special ability that is to be used to connect with past avatars and have control of all elements at the same time (at their full potential) when in dire need. Don't use it to cheat your way to the top in a child's race just because you are losing......that's just really immature and quite honestly, lame. I think that's great that she's doing her job, but my point is that she shouldn't run to conflict. We've seen time and time again, that there are and will be some conflicts that she will not be able to handle, so running towards them without thinking things through is going to hurt her. *cough season finale of book 3 cough* Paying for screwing up would be Asami lecturing at him, ending things, and he doesn't end up with Korra. That would be a negative repercussion to his act, but Mako is rewarded with Korra so he isn't really learning anything. And that goes for Korra as well. She is rewarded with Mako after all of the events that hurt Asami and Bo. Asami and Bo forgive her because the writers ship Makorra. It was written out of appeasement to the coupling, but I digress. Most people could forgive, but they wouldn't forget. And they would also not be bending over backward to help the cheaters when they are in a jam. That's common sense. And that's kind of shitty that Korra needs to tell Mako to be good to his girlfriend. And the fact that this message comes from her after all this shit not only screams guilt, but it also is more like a slap in the face to anyone that really liked Masami. It's just ridiculous, at least to me. My point is not that the benders are a higher class. My point is that the benders are ruling society, and this is a reason why non benders feel oppressed. Every type of bender is represented on the council, but there are no non benders to represent them. That's my point. And I am not saying that being a non-bender prevents one from doing any job or being anything. My point is that they are not represented in the society, their rights are later infringed upon by the benders, and some benders (like Korra and Mako) use their bending to make non-benders talk. Benders like them, THREATEN non benders, and what can the non benders do? Oblige by whatever the bender tells them to be because they aren't on an equal playing field. I'm not arguing against what you say about Amon. It's true, but a good bunch of "leaders with a cause" follow this mantra: "If one is a bad seed, they must all be bad seeds." And honestly, you're going to have to take that up with the writers. The Equalists aren't getting anywhere with equality with the council ('cause they're all benders and don't get what it's like to be a non bender), so force is the only tactic they can see as a way of getting people to look at their movement and actually achieve the goal they want to attain. And to an equalist member, bending is considered "evil." Most of the equalists had made some comment about abuse of bending. Hell, look at Amon. His own father used bending on him. Abuse at its finest...and bending to do it. And yes, Korra sided with the benders beforehand.....when the plot was introduced, she immediately asked what was wrong with bending, lorded her bending over several people, and didn't even try to understand the equalist movement. And then her ties to the bender side strengthened when the Equalists were actively hostile towards her, kidnapped her friend and a number of others, acted outside the law, and started the war within the city. And this is another reason why I have no sympathy for Korra. Korra is the avatar and she is supposed to be well versed in world affairs. Korra never takes the time to learn anything that's going on. For example, in Book 3, Korra doesn't realize the Earth Kingdom is divided in 3 rings of class. This is basic info., but she doesn't bother to know it. The fact that there are secrets (her dad was banished....that's such a good secret -__- and her dad and Tenzin kept her at the training camp) are irrelevant. The secrets just fueled Korra's anger and made her want to join Unalaq even more. Those secrets hold no bearing in the beginning. Korra should know who the chiefs of the tribes are......but she doesn't concern herself with the info. because she's in her own world. And that's all fine and dandy to mediate between the sides. My point is that she should be well versed before opening her mouth, because if she doesn't know what she's talking about, she 1.) looks bad, 2.) could fuel the struggle, or 3.) could deeply offend another side and look like she's taking sides. I called it....I knew you were going to call me out on this. Yes, the new bending is supposed to help the situation, but again, it's an underlying theme that Korra chose this bending because SHE WANTED to learn it and get away from Tenzin and air bending (because if you recall, Korra is calling herself a master after just learning how to bend and she's pissed that Tenzin and her father wanted her at the training camp as a child). Again, it's an underlying desire that Korra wants. I actually feel like Tenzin is in the right here. He wants Korra to be able to bend air and be A master/THE best, but Korra isn't having any of it. Tenzin also knows that Korra's uncle is this random new person thrown into the mix (conveniently now when spirits just happen to turn up), and he suddenly knows how to spirit bend when NO ONE ELSE CAN. Yeah.....well respected leader or not, that's awfully suspicious, but Korra doesn't care. She just wants to learn a new bending, and she figures it will help stop the rogue spirits (not the hostilities between the tribes....I might add). That's true that Korra's reasons are a mixture of moral and selfish reasons. My point is that we limit these characters to two choices. There are never JUST two choices. There are a ton of choices, yet Korra, and no one in this show for that matter, ever try to think outside the box. They stay within rigid frames of this or that, when really there are a ton of different choices to be made. God, I hope we see a different Korra. I actually like the Korra at the end of Book 3. She's quiet and humble AF (about damn time). Bummer that she's in that state......but she just needs some time. I completely agree. I just hate when they use cheap ploys like amnesia to make a character change for the better. It's just really crappy. I like to think it was Wan's humble beginnings that helped shape her a tad bit more too.

Michael-Daniel  I don't mean to be rude but all the points you made are absolute shit. Yes korra is irritating, stubborn and selfish sometime. But one thing i admire about her is that she does have a sense of responsibility. Like when she went to confront amon alone, she could have easily taken anyone but she didn't want them to get hurt. And another good quality is admitting when your wrong and she did that in book2:spirit. When she said everything was her fault. President Raiko is a bastard, he did view korra's point clearly rather he was concern about his resources. What kinda president does that. Please i'm begging you view carefully before you talk shit.

That is YOUR opinion, and you're free to have it. I on the other hand, don't see that instance as a "responsible" move. Korra's intentions are good, I will admit that, but putting yourself in harm's way when you know you are incapable of winning is IRRESPONSIBLE, and foolish I might add. This is what pisses me off about Korra; the lack of thought that she has when acting. And as for Korra admitting she was wrong..... it came a book too late. Additionally, President Raiko is responsible for an entire city and its management, which includes its resources for the people. Korra may be the protector of balance in the world, but she knew no more than Raiko did at the time. Why would a President risk everything when there is no sure probability that it would benefit him and his people? That's what Presidents do..... they try to manage a location and protect its people. Raiko did just that by keeping resources for his people. So again..... it's MY opinion and interpretation. I will talk shit on characters I do not like and I feel act ridiculous.

The writing is comprised of ass-pulls and random plots that suit our avatar, and many things are not explained or contradict the original explanations provided in ATLA. LOK for me, is a failure and disgrace to the ATLA name, and Korra for me, is the worst avatar. If I choose to post my opinion, that is my free choice. I am allowed to have an opinion.
