It was sad and everything that Cee and Robbie never got a chance cuz of her. But I think she was too young to put things into perspective.

So she wrote a different ending to her book. It is not really what happened to Robbie and Cecilia. She ruined the lives of two people who were so in love.

I don't think she truly knew what she was doing. Of course, she obviously knew she was lying, but she was young and didn't understand what the repercussions of her lie would be. She didn't do it for the sole purpose of destroying Robbie's life, she was just angry at him for supposedly attacking her sister and made a spontaneous decision to make him pay. What she did was horrible and ruined the lives of both Cecilia and Robbie, but my point is, that wasn't her intention, and she lived with the guilt and sorrow of that her whole life. If she hadn't been repentant, I wouldn't be so quick to forgive her, but she truly was sorry and spent the rest of her life wanting to make amends, and that's why I don't absolutely hate her.

i might someday forgive her but the fact that it took her so long to acknowledge her mistake just makes it that much harder.

I'm sorry, but this character seriously makes me want to scream. I don't know what it is, but it was the fact that she waited, like 64 years to atone for what she did that makes her unforgivable. She totally sucks.

Get over it; everyone is emotional because C&R didn't make it to the end.
But the title is Atonement; she paid every waking moment of her life with it. It didn't take 60-some years to atone her actions, it only took 60 years to publish the atonement. I haven't seen this movie/read in a while, so I can't remember the exact spot.. but I do believe she atoned them in her heart the moment it broke for them.
I forgive this fictional character. I feel like I have to, since her Atonement was the most powerful thing I ever saw come off pages and into the cinemas.

She said the book she wrote when she was old was for a kindness.......well she certainly waited long enough to show any kindness towards ALL of her victims. So many peoples entire lives were altered completely, and there is no way she could've redeemed herself unless she'd of told the truth immediately, which she did not do.

I could never forgive Briony. I understand that she had to live with the guilt, but it's one thing to destroy your own life, and it is a completely different subject when destroying others'. I think the act she committed was unforgivable, as I believe she knew it wasn't Robbie, but out of spite and impulse, she blamed him. I also was unable to forgive Lola, because I'm betting she knew it wasn't Robbie either.

I think to really "atone" what she had done, she needed to act sooner. She herself could've prevented any of this from happening, from the minute Robbie was arrested, until he was sent to the army. She had five years to atone her actions, but she was cowardly and let them die in solitude and unhappiness.

She completely destroyed two innocent people's lives; an act that is completely inexcusable.
