If there is anything that I like more than life itself, it’s Doctor Who, Harry Potter, and of course, anime. I saw my first anime almost ten years ago during a stage where I just couldn’t sleep through the night. Every night I would go to sleep and wake up a mere three to four hours later unable to fall in sleep again. My first anime, Yu Yu Hakusho, had a five o’clock showing everyday on Toonami and originally Adult Swim. The epic tale of Yusuke Urameshi drew me in. I completely loved it to death, this lead me to looking up the show and discovering that it was not just a regular cartoon, it was anime. This explained the beautiful artwork, and why it differed from other shows. At this point in time I was just a ten year addicted to television shows such as Power Rangers and Invader Zim. Discovering anime really changed what I watched. And in a way, I guess it just gave me something to watch every morning when I couldn’t sleep. It was way better than those hour long television advertisements; quite frankly everything was better than those vacuum commercials.
• Anime has beautiful artwork
Okay, not EVERY anime has beautiful artwork. But anime like: Kuroshitsuji, Soul Eater, Death Note, Durarara!!, Baccano!, Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu, Ouran High School Host Club, Sekaiichi Hatsukoi, Junjou Romantica , hell I could go on and on, all have great artwork.
•Character design
Once again, not all anime have good character designs. One of my absolute favorite things about anime is the facial expressions. I love how each expression denotes moods and thoughts. Everything from the bloody nose, the sweat drop, or the ‘X’ eyes to show a knockout is pure gold to me. I just adore it.
•Japanese culture
Okay, their culture doesn’t normally survive the dub. But I’m basically talking about the story themes adapted into the anime as well as the culture of the Japanese. Everything from Japanese history, beliefs, and classical literature are adapted in anime. Since I always found the Japanese culture to be a beautiful and interesting one, it is a major bonus for me.
•75% of American television sucks
Japanese and UK television is 100% better than most American shows.
