With Stefan, Elena was strong she fought for herself and her loved ones. He accepted her choices and respected her more than anything. They still love each other and are soulmates. With Stefan the problems came from the outside, from the threats. With Damon, Elena is not respected, she is not given a choice. Damon is abusive, even with Elena.
