"I SCENT WINDCLAN!" STONETOOTH EXLCLAIMED. WITH that, a WindClan patrol came into view. They were chasing after a rabbit, on *ShadowClan* territory.
"Those fox hearts!" I muttered.
Among the patrol, Hawkheart, WindClan's medicine cat, was among them.
"Let's teach them a lesson," Poolcloud growled.
Poolcloud seemed to be acting like herself again, but there still seemed like there was tiredness in her eyes. I've also noticed she looked a little bigger, even though it was late leaf-bare.
"I agreed," Foxheart rasped.
Crowpaw looked ready to fight off these intruders. "You give the word, Stonetooth."
Stonetooth then snarled, revealing his unusually long teeth. He then leapt out to face the WindClan warriors.
"What are you doing on ShadowClan territory!?" Stonetooth yowled.
Hawkheart snarled. "Just huning a rabbit that is rightfully ours!"
"On *our* territory!" Poolcloud snarled.
Crowpaw then growled, "Get out of our territory! We will fight if you don't!" She then unsheathed her claws.
Foxheart scolded her, but it was inaudible.
"Fine, little apprentice," Dawnstripe hissed. "We'll leave, after we get *our* prey!"
"Attack!" Stonetooth yowled.
I immediately pounced at Hawkheart. Unsheathing my claws, I stratched at his belly. He then stretched out his hind legs, and kicked me off.
"This should be fun," Hawkheart purred.
"Oh, yeah?" I took my paw and swiped it across his face. Clawing into his forehead, there was a trickle of blood running down his face.
"You think you're so quick?" Hawkheart hissed. Fast as lightning, Hawkheart clawed me in the middle of my face. There was excrutiating pain in a slant from above my right eye to my nose.
"Nice try, though," Hawkheart went to fight other cats.
"Hey! Get off me!"
Recognizing Poolcloud's cry, I saw that she was fighting Redclaw. He had her pinned, and Poolcloud was struggling.
"Silly ShadowClan cat!" Redclaw guffawed. "You think I'll let you go that easily?"
Poolcloud growled, protectively. She found the strength to push Redclaw away. She then rammed into his flank. The breath was knocked out of him, and when Redclaw stood up, he ran for the WindClan border.
"WindClan," Hawkheart yowled out, "retreat! Retreat!"
All the other WindClan warriors sprinted back to WindClan territory. I cleaned my face with my paw, wiping blood from the scratch Hawkheart gave me. Everyone was traumatized by injuries. Meanwhile, I saw Poolcloud, who was exhausted, gasped for breath.
"Great StarClan," Poolcloud gasped, then she collapsed on the ground.
"Poolcloud!" I ran to her side. "Are you okay?"
"I don't know Yellowfang," she rasped. "I don't know what's wrong with me."
I hoisted Poolcloud up. She was unusually heavy and I almost staggered under her weight. "I'll take you home," I sighed, escorting Poolcloud to the ShadowClan camp.
"Poolcloud!" Three-leg went to her the moment we came back. "What's wrong?"
"I'm fine!" Poolcloud snapped. "I'm just going to see Sagewhisker for some poppy seeds to help me sleep. I'm having trouble sleeping."
"You sleep all day!" I told her.
"So why is this happening to me?" she yowled. She then took a deep breath. "I'm sorry," she sniffled, "I'm just so overwhelmed."
"I'll tell you what," I told Poolcloud, making sure Three-leg was out of hearing range. "Go and see Sagewhisker and see what's wrong. Afterwards, we can work something out, okay?"
Poolcloud nodded. When we went to Sagewhisker's den, she was taking a nap. But, she woke when we arrived.
"Great StarClan!" Sagewhisker exclaime. "You both are badly wounded! I'll get the supplies; you two just lay down!"
We both laid down in the den.
Poolcloud gazed at me. "When do you think is the right time to ask Sagewhisker?"
"Wait for it..."
Sagewhisker started to put little bits of cobwebs across my face. She then went to Poolcloud's side.
"You're clawed up, everywhere!" Sagewhisker mewed. "There's especially deep claw marks on your belly."
That was when Poolcloud suddenly gasped. She gaszed at me again.
"...Now," I mouthed.
"Sageshisker," Poolcloud mewed.
"What is it?"
Poolcloud stuttered. "I'd like to tell you in private."
Sagewhisker nodded. "Okay. I just need to ask Yellowfang something really important. I'll be right back, okay?"
She nodded. Sagewhisker padded up to me. "Poolcloud will be fine. Follow me." I followed Sagewhisker outside the marsh tunnel. When we were at the entrance, Sagewhiker asked me, "Do you want to be the next ShadowClan medicine cat?"
*What?* "What are you saying?"
"Well," she replied, "I am getting too old to be the medicine cat. I've been asking StarClan for signs on who will be my successor. All signs are telling me tat you will be my medicine cat apprentice. that means, when I retire, you will be the next medicine cat. So, will you--"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" I interrupted. "You are asking *me* to be the next medicine cat?"
Sagewhisker nodded.
I purred. "You've probably made a big mistake! I can't be a medicine cat! I'm a warrior! I trained at six moons old to be a warrior, not a medicine cat! I'm not cut out for it, I know it! I think you've got the wrong cat!"
"No," Sagewhisker answered. "StarClan has chosen who will be my successor, personally. But, I will give you time to decide your choice. If you excuse me, Poolcloud might wonder where I am."
*I need to tell Three-leg!* I found him sunning himself outside the warriors' den. For the first time, I had realized how skinny and sickly he was. I had also noticed that where Three-leg's missing leg should be, was swollen. I felt sorry when I noticed I could see his bones. *He really is sick!*
"Three-leg?"
My brother opened his eyes. His green eyes were getting pale and dull. "What is it?"
"Sagewhisker had asked *me* to be her medicine cat apprentice! I don't think I'm cut out for it! I mean, I'm a warrior! But, what do you think?"
Three-leg brought himself up on his haunches. "You know what I think?" he replied. "I think, you should go for it."
"But--" I stuttered, "but I'm a warrior! Also, I promised to fight for you, remember?"
"You did," Three-leg started, "but I guess this is part of your destiny. I know you'll be a great medicine cat. Say yes, you'll probably never regret it."
I saw the desperation in my brother's dull eyes.
"Okay," I nodded.
My brother purred. "Who knows? Maybe you'll be the greatest medicine cat ShadowClan will ever see."
"Yeah," I pressed against his side and hugged closer. *Stay strong, my little brother.*
I then saw Raggedpelt come back from a hunting patrol. I padded by his side.
"Yellowfang!" He was probably looking at the battle scar on my face. "What happened?"
"WindClan invaded," I snapped. "That's what happened!"
"I'll teach those fox-hearts a lesson!"
"Also, "I added, "I'm going to be a medicine cat apprentice."
Raggedpelt gaped. "That means, we can't truly be together."
"I guess that's exactly what it means."
"Well," he pressed, "I suppose you'll be a wonderful successor." He pressed his nose to my muzzle.
I leaned my head against his flank. *If only we'd be together, forever.* We ate a lizard from the fresh-kill pile. Raggedpelt then went to see Cedarstar, for whatever reason. Finally, I saw Poolcloud come out of the medicine den.
The same glow in her eyes seemed stronger, mixing over her tiredness. She grabbed a mouse, and she finished it in famished bites. *Somebody's hungry.* Poolcloud walked to my side, and, for no reason at all, she sighed.
"Poolcloud?" I whispered her name.
"Oh, hey, Yellowfang." She looked towards me. "I didn't see you there."
*You didn't see me there? I stood here for ages!*
Poolcloud looked down at her paws. "I need to tell Three-leg something," she mewed, "but I don't think I can. I mean, I'm kind of nervous. Can you tell him for me?" ...
