LEAFPAW LIMPED ON THREE LEGS, AND I stayed by his side. Even though I told them no, Brakenfoot and Archeye traveled beside us.
"We're close to the ShadowClan camp," Cedarstar mewed. "Don't shock anyone."
*How are we* not *going to shock them?* An apprentice was dead and another lost a leg.
"Cedarstar, you're back!" Littlebird was with her kits, "and--oh, no! Come on, little ones, inside!"
"But we just got out!" Hollykit squeaked.
"Just stay in there!" Littlebird herded her kits to the nursery. "I'll call you out when it's okay."
We both walked into the clearing. There were yowls of distress from every cat.
"Specklepaw had died on the Thunderpath," Raggedpaw's cracked mew was filled with sorrow.
"Leafpaw lost his leg to a badger," I sniffled.
Leafpaw collapsed on teh ground with tiredness.
"Take him to Sagewhisker," Cedarstar mewed.
"Okay," I grabbe Leafpaw by the scrugg, and hauled him to the marshy tunnel. Poolpaw padded toward me.
"Oh, StarClan!" Poolpaw pressed her muzzle to Leafpaw's head. "What happened?"
"A badger bit off Leafpaw's leg."
Poolpaw was gasping. "Oh, no! Oh, no! I'll help you!"
We both got Leafpaw into the medicine cats' den, where Sagewhisker was waiting for us.
"I'll get the cobwebs." Sagewhisker immediately went through her supplies.
Leafpaw woke up, suddenly. "What's going on?"
Poolpaw shyly pressed her nose to Leafpaw's muzzle. "Sagewhisker's going to help you with your leg. It's okay."
Leafpaw sighed. "Thanks, Poolpaw." He then winced as Sagewhisker pressed the cobwebs on his deformed leg.
"Sorry," Sagewhisker meowed. "I'm almost done. ... There. Wait here, I'll be right back." She got out of the den, leaving us three apprentices, alone.
"Oh, this is terrible!" Poolpaw started to tear up.
"It's okay," he replied softly. "Things like this happen, I guess."
He staggered up on his one forepaw to sit up on his haunches.
Cedarstar came into the den. "Good, you're awake."
"Yeah," Leafpaw shrugged.
"It breaks my heart to say this, but you will not like your new name."
My brother nodded.
Cedarstar shyly pressed his muzzle to Leafpaw's head. "From this moment on, you will be known as Three-leg. StarClan must have a good reason for your mistfortunes, but remember you are never a burden. For now, you can sleep in here."
Three-leg nodded his head, holding back tears. "Okay. Thank you."
Cedarstar padded out. 'I'm so sorry, Three-leg. I'm truly sorry."
I couldn't bear to look at Three-leg breaking down. I turned away, letting Poolpaw comfort him.
"It'll be okay," Poolpaw mewed. "You can get through this."
"Why me?" Three-leg sniffled. "Why did the badger have to attack me?"
"I don't know," she replied. "I'll help you get through this."
"Thanks," I looked back to see Three-leg press his muzzle against Poolpaw's. "I love you."
