I INCHED DROWSILY OUT OF THE APPRENTICES' den, hoping not to wake up the others. As I left, I gazed back at my sleeping denmates: Poolpaw, Leafpaw, Specklepaw, and Raggedpaw.
"Yellowpaw!" Brakenfoot called me from across the clearing. "Are you ready for training, today?"
"Excited!" I mewed.
"Well," he began, "you're going to change the elders' den and nuserys' beddings today, so you could take a break."
*Oh.* Brakenfoot and I mostly trained in fighting than anything else. It was strange to hear him say that I was doing the bedding. *He's hiding something.* I decided to let it be and do what I was told.
I kindly walked into the elders' den.
"Oh, hello, Yellowpaw," Silverfur greeted. She stood up on her haunches. "Beautiful morning, isn't it?"
I nodded. "Especially for leaf-fall."
"I agree," Lionpelt grunted. "I love this season; leaves changing and falling on the ground. Beautiful outside."
Swiftwind, the oldest cat in ShadowClan, perked up his head and snarled. "Also a season closer to a blackcough epidemic. So many cats died last leaf-bare."
"Oh, hush," grunted Silverfur. "What brings you here, Yellowpaw?"
"Oh," I cleared my throat, "I'm here to change your bedding."
"Oh, good," Lionpelt sighed. "My legs were cramping in this one."
"I'll go get the bedding from Sagewhisker." I stepped lightly to the medicine cats' den. The only time I really go in there is to get bedding. I never really got sick, so it felt unatural coming there. The scents were overwhelming to me. I couldn't wait to find Sagewhisker, who was sorting her supplies.
"Hello, Yellowpaw," Sagewhisker looked up. "Need bedding?"
"How do you know?"
Sagewhisker purred. "Medicine cats know everything. I'll go get it."
As Sagewhisker was looking for the bedding, I looked around her den. The herbs and medicine were neatly stacked and in order.
"How is your training, youn one?" she asked, looking through her supplies.
I sighed. "Well, Brakenfoot just throws stuff at me, I remember, and I improve."
"Good, good," Sagewhisker got moss and weaved it into the braken. "You're not upset about the...incident?"
"That was seasons ago!" I sighed. "Why should I be upset about a little thing like that?"
"Losing your parents is *not* little," she explained. "I lost my sister when I was very young, and I still never forget it."
I looked down at my paws. I was recently apprenticed when I found out that my parents were taken by Twolegs when they were patrolling Carrionplace. My brother, Leafpaw, and I suffered greatly with grief. But, I tried to learn to forgive and forget; never actually succeeding.
"I don't forget either," I replied.
"Here," Sagewhisker handed me the bedding. "I'm sure Littlebird will appreciate your visit."
"Thank you," I tugged the bedding out of the medicine den. The elders' den was full of activity when I walked in.
"Good," Silverfur rose up. "Swiftwind was getting impatient."
"You know who's impatient?" Swiftwind blurted. "StarClan, waiting for warriors to join them!"
"Hush," Lionpelt woke from his nap. "Stop scaring the apprentices and kits."
"That's fine, Lionpelt," I insisted. "I'm not so young, anymore."
"I'm sure she'll have her warriors ceremony, soon," Silverfur told Lionpelt.
"I'm not sure," I purred, shyly. "I've only been an apprentice for five moons--six moons, almost."
"Well," Lionpelt eyed me, lightly, "you never know. I mean, look at Swiftwind. He only traind for six moons, a couple of moons less than average."
"If apprentices would pay attention to their mentors," Swiftwind growled, "then they'd finish training earlier. Yellopaw is a good example of an apprentice who listens."
I nodded gratefully. "I hope you're settled. Poolpaw will be here later to check for ticks."
Thank you, Yellowpaw," Silverfur breathed. "Now, I can finally rest."
Taking the leftover bedding, I went into the nursery to visit Littlebird.
"Hi, I--"
"Shh!" Littlebird shushed me the moment I walked in. "The kits are finally in bed. They were fidgeting since dawn."
"Sorry." I looked down at Hollykit and Crowkit. The she-kits were sound asleep. "I was going to say that I had bedding," I lowered my voice, "but I'll come back later."
"No, it's okay," Littlebird lighly lifted the kits out of the soiled nest. "Go ahead."
I wrinkled my nose. "Don't they know to use the dirtplace?"
She purred. "I wonder the same thing."
"Here you go. I'd better see what Brakenfoot wants me to do next."
"Thank you," Littlebird replied.
It was almost Sunhigh when I met with Brakenfoot.
"Done, already?" Brakenfoot praised. "I am impressed."
Stonetooth walked into the clearing with his apprentice, Raggedpaw. Featherstorm came with Specklepaw, and Archeye came with my brother, Leafpaw.
"Brakenfoot, Stonetooth, Featherstorm, and Archeye," I heard Cedarstar call out the mentors' names, "come here with your apprentices."
"Come on, Yellowpaw," Brakenfoot escorted me to the apprentices' den.
Once we were all there, Cedarstar spoke. "Your apprentices had trained well. Some are ready earlier than others, but they've all learned it takes. Do you think they are ready to become warriors?"
"Absolutely," all four mentors replied.
"So we're going to be warriors?" Specklepaw asked."
"Yeah, little brother," Raggedpaw purred.
"You hear that, Yellowpaw?" Leafpaw exclaimed. "We're going to be warriors! Mom and Dad would be so proud!"
"Yeah," I pressed against my younger brother's side.
"What do they have to do?" Featherstorm asked.
"Well," Cedarstar was talking to us apprentices, "I'll take you guys out for a patrol, to see how you are without a mentor. When I see you've learned well, we will have the warriors' ceremony at sunset."
"Okay," Specklepaw exclaimed.
Then Cedarstar spoke with the mentors. "If you don't see us by sunset, or if you sense danger, come back for us."
The mentors nodded, as Cedarstar escorted us out of the slearing.
"Where are we going to patrol?" Leafpaw asked.
Cedarstar looked at my brother. "The Thunderpath."...
