Vegetarians Did you know that gelatin is not meat? Vegans don't eat it because it's from an animal's hooves. (not hurting the animal)

Gelatine is made of pork rind, animal bones and skins. Don't know who told you the rubbish with the hooves. Gelatine is practically pure protein and you don't find that in hooves.
So, yes, gelatine is meat to me and I don't eat it.

No, they have different gelatin now. In Australia, anyway. It is not rubbish.

I was told gelatin came from both hooves and bones, and that even getting it from the hooves still required them to kill the animal.

I know of a gelatin alternative that is vegetarian but not vegan. It's made using beeswax though, no hooves or anything like that.

It's a good idea to check the ingredients wherever you are in the world. There are some parts of the world that use calf stomach in almost all their cheese, but where I'm from cheese is almost always vegetarian. Things are just done differently in different places.

The gelatin from hooves is not from killing the animal. What country do you live in?

Gelatine is from animal skin and bones. They use acid to extract the collagen from said skin and bones and make gelatine. You can't do that while the animal is alive therefore gelatine is from dead animals, so as a vegetarian I do not eat it. Personally I would check where your gelatine comes from yourself, don't rely on what someone told you.

I realise I'm a few months late now (apologies for not seeing your message sooner!) but I'm from England. As I said, we have a gelatin-like sweets here that use beeswax as an ingredient, so it's suitable for vegetarians but not vegans. The vegetarian selection of Haribo uses beeswax instead of extract from animal body parts. I also mentioned about the cheese - I've heard some Americans have trouble finding cheese that is suitable for vegetarians due to using calf stomach as an ingredient (not sure which parts of America though - it might happen in some states more than others for all I know) but in England most cheese is pretty safe.

To be honest, I don't think I'd eat gelatin made from hooves anyway even if they didn't kill the animal. As far as I'm concerned, it still means you're technically eating bits of an animal, which I think is far more gross than just eating something that came out of the animal, so it's not for me. That said, although I'd probably be freaked out at whatever the answer may be, I'd be interested in finding out how they extract from the hooves without actually killing or hurting the animal.

It's also a good idea to check out the companies you buy gelatin or gelatin-like substances from. While there might be an Australian alternative that is suitable for vegetarians, there may also be non-vegetarian gelatin available in Australia that comes from other countries.
