part 4
"My name is Edward Whitlock. This is my sister Rosalie Cullen and my father is Carlisle Cullen. What's your name?" Lying to a mind reader seemed less then practical so I muttered "Juliet". He asked me if I lived around here and I told him I'd just moved in. The small talk was not working and my eyes were still wet. The leader sighed "I know you're afraid of being near us but I cannot in good conscience send you home. Not in your condition. Now I can talk to your parents and arrange for you to be taken care of elsewhere. I will ask you not to tell your parents what you know about us. We can even move away if it would make you feel-" The mind reader cleared his throat "she doesn't..." he paused and looked at me as if asking permission to share. I found myself thinking that he shouldn't have to ask. It wasn't his choice to hear my thoughts. Not his fault.
"She doesn't live with her parents... she lives alone." I focused as hard as I could on several plausible reasons for why I was alone thinking about each "Oh shoot! Now the mind reader knows the real story!" so that if anything should slip through he wouldn't know. I didn't want him to know my past.
Then a new thought occurred to me. Maybe I shouldn't play this game. An angry vampire. Not good. I looked up to gauge his reaction to my game but all I saw was his reaction to my mental picture of an angry Edward Whitlock unleashing his strength on me. He looked horrified.
The leader was saying that it might be best to come to his house. He had everything he needed to take care of me. He said that as soon as I was alright I could leave. I was open to the possibility that he was telling the truth. Even then an vampire could kill me accidentally, but it seemed better than being killed on purpose for demanding to be released. I was going to thank them but I couldn't find my voice. The males were talking about how I was confused and scared and my body didn't know how to handle it. I realized that the mind reader was driving fast but it didn't really bother me. I had bigger problems.
They pulled over. The leader took the wheel and the mind reader and she-vampire left to run and let "the others" know I was coming. There were more? Great. I knew somehow that they didn't have to pull over. It was for my benefit.
