Chapter one: The first day
Waking up to a cold, damp, Monday morning always puts me in a bad mood. I get up and hopped into a hot shower to try and shake off the cold, darkness of my dream that sends shivers down my spine that freeze me to the core. I shuddered involuntarily shuddered. I grabbed to side of the tub for support. Once I had relaxed my muscles and stopped shuddering, I wrapped a towel under my arms and went back to my small cramped room.
I pulled on my grey long sleeved T-shirt and my Good Charlotte tour T-shirt over it. I pulled on my long johns and ratty light wash jeans over top, one look in the mirror told my that I defiantly needed more time to look presentable, but since school started in less than a half hour I pulled my hair into a loose ponytail and ran down the stairs toward the smell of eggs and bacon.
“Good morning Alice honey,” my mom said with very little enthusiasm, “How did you sleep?”
“Fine,” Okay so I haven’t told my mom about the night mares and the creepy people staring in them, but I new that it wouldn’t make sense to her, so I decided to keep quiet.
“That’s good.” She tried to say but ended up yawning and it came out barely audible.
“I’m going to head out now.” I told her as I slipped on my high tops and grabbed my keys. She didn’t answer. My mom could win an award for being the most unobservant person in the history of the world.
I slid into the seat of my Yogo that had peaces of tape covering holes from its previous owner, not me; I take excellent care of my miniscule mode of transportation. It sputtered to life and hummed, more wheezed, down the long road.
My life is very boring, I had a routine I have a routine I almost never deviate from, and I’m one of the most boring people you will ever meet.
First days of school, suck, but you know what’s worse first days at new schools, now that really blows, well that’s what I’m doing today, new town, new school, new friends, I am starting all over.
I pull into a free parking spot near the entrance to the big ugly beast of a building, and turn off the engine. I sit in my car for a few minutes watching students peek curiously at the new and ancient vehicle with the strange girl just sitting inside.
Finally I come to a decision to be more confident about this and just get it over with, and most of all lay low. I took a deep breathe and shoved my door open with maybe to much power but I felt eager with my new resolution.
With a loud cracking sound that sounded like I had hit another car, or a boulder the door swung but and almost hit me in the face. But to my surprise it didn’t, a pale hand caught it before it could shut; I looked up anxiously to see the damage my car door had done to whatever I just hit.
What I was not expecting was a man, no not just any man. This man was different. He had a strange look in his eye, this look was not of safety, sanity, or humanity. He was stiff and didn’t move, he was a statue, not moving or shaking, or breathing.
I looked at this inhuman person standing in front of me, studying his features carefully.
His hair was dark blond in a mess around his perfect face. Smooth milk white skin, and a straight angled nose. Last I looked into his eyes, the most frightening sight, but also the most beautiful. They were coal black, not a hint of color except for the deep red ring just on the edge of his iris. They were framed by a thick rim of dark lashes and deep purple broses, all around his eyes like he hadn’t slept in weeks.
Our gaze locked of a split second and he gave me the wickedest most terrifying look ever. The fury burned in his eye’s like acid, his lips pressed together in a hard line and his perfect forehead creased in frustration and anger. Also I think I saw some pain in his look, but I can’t be sure, he was already walking away, his back to me, gliding gracefully towards the school and disappearing inside.
He is the most beautiful creature who I’d ever imagined, I thought I was dreaming, until the first bell cut into my thoughts and I rushed to get my bag and scramble awkwardly out of my car and slammed the door behind me. Before I could walk towards the school something caught my eye.
I had to look twice, but it was there, a small but defined dent in my door. I ran my hand over the indent marveling of how a human man could make such a mark in my ‘not so easily dented’ car door. But then I remembered, the pained and startling look on his face, his black eyes and his inhuman, perfectly beautiful face. This could not be just a regular guy; he was different. I was going to get to the bottom of this strange man.
I gave up trying to figure out the strange man, for now, and made my way inside. It was exactly what I was expecting, light chipped paint, lockers with writing on them, and ‘wet floor’ signs. Nothing special, it was in much better shape than some schools I’d been to, and I could live with a little graffiti.
I looked at my map and found the main office.
I walked into the small hot room, with a petit woman behind a tall desk. She was on the phone, when she spotted me; she smiled and held up her index finger as a gesture that she would be with me in a minute. I decided to sit in one of the uncomfortable fold out chairs and wait for her to be done.
It only took her a few minutes to get off the phone, so when she hung up a stood and came up to the desk.
“I’m sorry that took so long,” She apologized with a sweet smile, “You must be Alice Sheppard, I’m Anna, I’m the schools principle and I’m also the school psychiatrist, and I occasionally run the office,” Wow, this town has so few people that they have to start giving one person multiple jobs, great. “If you ever need anything you can talk to me or Dexter about it, okay? Dexter is the school administrator and he also teaches Science.”
“Thanks,” I said with a smile, “I actually need my schedule.”
“Oh yes, I have it right here,” She opens one of many drawers of the desk and hands me a piece of paper. “There you are, it has your entire day schedule on it, and if anything changes you’ll be notified.”
“Thank you.” I smiled and exited the room.
There were people, okay not exactly everywhere, this town couldn’t fill a school, but it was pretty loud in the hall with everyone in there at the same time, with out really thinking about it I gazed around the semi busy hallway searching for the man who had dented my door, getting prepared to order him to fix it or at least ask him how he could have made it in the first place.
“Hi,” A cheerful voice came from beside me, I turned to see who it was, “Your Alice right?” The girl’s voice was an octave higher than many girls, and she was tall and very thin, her dark brown hair was pulled into two pigtails and she had her arms full of books.
“Yes,” I say, shocked, and a little embarrassed that everyone knows my name.
“Hi, I’m Carry, nice to meet you.” She piled all her books into her right hand so she could shake my hand with her left.
“Hello.” I say in a friendly tone, “can you help me I’m sort of lost? Can you tell me what my first class is?”
“Sure thing”, she takes my schedule from me and looks at it for about a second “Hey cool, we have the same first class”, she smiles at the happy coincidence and gives my schedule back. “It’s History.”
“Thank you.” And just like that, we were, sort of, friends.
We entered the room together and everyone looked up to watch us walk to our seats together.
“Class,” The man called the class to order“, this is Alice Sheppard she is new to the school so make sure you make her feel welcome.” He announces, I look down blushing easily, folding my arms, and wresting them on the desk in front of me.
The teacher continued with his lecture about entry in Canadian History, while I daydreamed.
The next few classes rushed by in a blur and it was time for lunch. Carry walked with me through the lunch line chatting the whole way.
“Don’t eat the Mac and Cheese.” She suggested with a little shudder and then giggles. I am not hungry so I got lemonade and an apple.
We walked to a table in the middle of the room where she introduced me to her friends. One is named Diana and the other Gina, they seemed nice.
“Ugh,” Diana moaned, “Look at them.” There burning envy in her words and I follow her gaze to see who she was jealous of, my jaw drops.
It was him, the guy from this morning, the one who had dented my car. Except he was not alone, like I had thought, no he had three other people with him.
One was a tall male, more buff then the one from this morning, he had darker hair and black eyes, the other was a girl she was very petit and very fare, she had long dark hair that came to the middle of her back. Then there was another male, this one was shorter, more gangly but from what I could see still muscular. They all looked so similar, but there was something different about the last two, they all had white skin, perfect faces, then I saw the difference. The smaller man and the girl, there eye’s were, almost white, they were a milky cream color with gold flecks, They did not look as harsh as the other two, there eyes kinder, and they did not have the pained look that the dark eyed, dent guy has. It was hard to look at them, and not feel jealous.
“Oh Diana,” Carry groans“, Stop torturing yourself.”
“W-who are they?” I asked
“The London’s” Gina answered. “Mr. London and his wife took them in, kind of like, adopted, but they are so not old enough to be there parents. They moved down here like, a few years ago. You see that big guy, his name is Fletcher , and the girl is Fawn, yah, they’re together, there’s another one, a girl named Bliss, but she’s not here today her and that small guy are together,” she motioned to the gangly guy. “That’s William.”
“What about him?” I pointed with my chin, towards the man who had glared at me this morning.
“Ah”, she sighed, “That is Noah. He is single”, she said and then giggles. She and the other two girls dive into a conversation about Gina’s new boyfriend but I couldn’t take my eyes off Noah. Suddenly, his eye’s shoot up to look straight into mine, I looked away quickly letting my hair fall in the way of his glaring eyes. I peeked up and he was still looking at me, with a look that made me almost scared but I was more, interested then scared, more drawn to him than ever.
“Alice?” Carry’s voice punctured the bubble I was in and I looked up at her. “Would that be okay?”
“What?”
She rolled her eyes and let out a sigh, “If I was Gina’s lab partner, she needs one and I offered to be hers, would that be alright?”
“Oh sure,”
“Awesome”. She said and went back into talking about who knows what.
I looked up to see Fawn, stand gracefully and glide to the trash with just as much if not more grace than Noah had in the parking lot, and dumped her full tray into the garbage, and without another look she strode out the door with perfect grace.
I looked back at the table, and Noah was looking at me again, Fletcher looked at him then followed his gaze and looked at me, then back at his brother, Fletcher hit Noah’s arm as if to get his attention to pull his gaze away from me. Noah looked at his brother and began to speak but his lips moved so fast that I could not make out a single word. Fletcher just shook his head.
The rest of the day went by petty fast and then it was time for Science. I have been dreading this all worrying about who would be my partner. When I walked in I went strait the man sitting behind the desk, Dexter I’m assuming, and asked him where I can sit.
“We’re pretty full here, but you can sit third row back on the right, there is an empty seat, whoever is sitting beside you will be your partner.”
“Thank you.” I smiled and set off to my seat.
Of course, who else would it be, Noah was sitting in one of the two chairs pulled up to the small table. His eye’s closed, looking prepared for something, had he heard what Dexter had said across the room?
I pulled the chair out and as I sat down Noah’s body stiffened. His jaw clenched, his whole body went ridged, and ever so subtly, he leaned away.
The entire class we worked in silence, he stayed as far from me as possible and avoided contact in anyway. About three seconds before the bell rang he stood suddenly and half ran out of the room.
I made my way to my little yellow Yogo and Climbed in tossing my bag into the back seat and screeching out of the parking lot, getting away from this crazy school as fast as I could.
When I walk in the door, my mom was at work. I hopped in the shower warming up after the cool day getting into a T-shirt and sweats and decided to make stroganoff to try and keep my mind off of today. I set the table nice and made dinner extra extravagant. My mom gets home then and we both sit down to eat together.
“Thank you honey this is wonderful.” She said with actual appreciation.
“You’re welcome.”
“So how was your first day?”
“Fine, I met this girl Carry and her friends Gina and Diana, they were nice.”
“Oh yah how is Carry?”
“You know her?”
“Of course, she used to come over all the time to play with you, I guess you were to young to remember.”
“She’s good, I’m kind of tired, and I think I’m going to head to bed.”
“Okay sweet heart, love you.”
“Love you too.” I called as I make my way upstairs.
I close my door and go to sit on my bed. I lay down, exhausted from the day of emotional stress, and let my eyes close.
Chapter two: Nightmare
(Teaser)
It is dark, and cold, I wonder through the dark forest, lost. Then I heard a whisper, an angel’s voice calling my name. I turned to see Noah, standing ten feet away, some sort of light coming off of him, a dim glow. He raised his hand slowly, to motion with his index finger for me to come to him, but I hesitated.
“Come”, He purrs.
I lifted my hand, reaching out for him, and then I hear another, frantic voice coming from behind me. I turned to see my mother, with wide eye’s reaching for me.
“Alice!” She yelled “Don’t!”
