OK. Here goes. I've seen it multiple times and read the series multiple times. It had nothing to do with the baby. If it did, then the second film would be all ass backwards. Bianca (Volturri secretary) brings the big wigs a note from Carlisle, letting them know that BELLA has been made a vampire. If you remember New Moon, that was the condition. She be made a vamp or they kill her because she's a human who knows too much. Then Caius and Marcus say "Oh cool, now we can stop worrying about her telling our secrets" (not exact quote) and Aro says, "This isn't about the fate of a mere mortal. They have something I want" (almost exact quote). What Aro means, is that he has had his greedy eyes on Alice and Edward for their extra vamp abilities since he met them in New Moon. When Bella tagged along and Aro met her, he was immediately intrigued by her unique ability to block the "mental" powers of vamps, like Edward's mind reading, Aro's reading your whole past thing, and Jane's mental pain affliction. He knew that when Bella was finally made a vamp, this ability was likely to amp itself up or manifest itself in a possibly powerful way. And thus the thing he wants most, is Bella. You throw in Edward and Alice into Aro's bucket list, and you've got a triple whammy. So there you have it, the Cullens will only be made more powerful by Bella and Aro not only knows this, but wants what they have and the biggest piece of that puzzle is going to be Bella. Hope the second film is a doozy :)
