Jacob would not "literally kill himself". In the books, it's been confirmed that Jacob would never be so noble. Jacob was playing on Bella's vulnerability to get her to kiss him.

Jacob loves her as much as Edward loves her. The only difference? Edward can love her FOREVER. Jake can't, but he can give her as much love as Edward and he can give her a normal life, he is healthier for her, she wouldn't have to say goodbye to anyone, just like he said in Eclipse, it wouldn't be so tough to her visiting her dad, mum, or anyone.. And you can say I didn't read the books properly, but I've read them 11 times each and, you know, it's not just 'getting' things in the book, it's about 'living' them in a way, too.. And that's how I understood Jacob, his thoughts and everything.. And, yeah, he loves her UNCODITIONALLY.
