Unless you want to count S2, when they made us think that the girl Lucas thought was "slipping away" was Peyton... but then it turned out to be Brooke. But I'm not sure if that really counts? I mean when Damon & Elena got together in S4 they put this storyline with the doppelgangers 'destined to be together' (aka Stefan & Elena) but it was not about Damon, it was a failed attempt to keep the love triangle on and it didnt worked out.
