This. Damon and Elena (AS INDIVIDUALS) hide so much about themselves. Damon has his humanity in which only Elena see's, and Elena fakes a smile every day.

I don't see how the 'But there's a side to you, that I never knew, never knew' relates to Delena, because they both see that side. Elena sees Damons humanity, and Damon sees Elena's fun side/old self.
