Before you call for our heads, Delena fans, hear us out. There doesn’t seem to be any stopping Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) at the moment. They’ll clearly have some time to feel each other out (metaphorically and perhaps literally), but we wouldn’t count Stefan (Paul Wesley) as totally out of this love triangle just yet. You know how
The Vampire Diaries adores it love geometry, and there are plenty of reasons Stelena fans should still have hope. It might not happen for a while, but we think eventually Stefan and Elena will give it another shot.

1. Stefan knows Elena really well.

While Damon was whispering “kill, kill, kill” in the new vamp’s ear, Stefan was afraid murder would break Elena. And it nearly did. Sure, it was helped along by Connor’s (Todd Williams) psychological games, but she nearly committed suicide over the guilt. Damon may have been right that killing was universally unavoidable for a vampire, but Stefan understood how Elena would react because of how well he knows her.

That whole vampire thing will grow on him in time.
It was heartbreaking to hear Stefan admit that he wasn’t too fond of vampire Elena. But she’d only had her fangs for what, a couple of days? After a few weeks without the woman who helps keep the Ripper in check, Stefan will surely realize Elena hasn’t changed all that much. He’d recently seen her vomit up buckets of blood. That would be enough to give anyone pause, right?

2. He lets her make her own choices.

Damon would’ve said, “To hell with what you want,” and left Matt (Zach Roerig) to drown in the car at the end of Season 3. OK, Stefan’s decision to help Matt ultimately killed Elena, but she told Stefan that she was glad he listened to her.

3. Stefan set Elena free.

It can’t be easy knowing your girlfriend has feelings for your brother. Stefan basically told Elena to follow her heart. Here’s the rub: Elena’s love for Stefan hasn’t suddenly disappeared (we don’t think), so she’s going to have the same problem with Damon that she did with Stefan. No matter which brother she’s with, there’s always going to be the other Salvatore tapping her on the shoulder, asking her to dance.

A list of quotes for your consideration.
These characters said it better than we ever could:

Damon (about Stefan): He just tried to behead someone in the middle of a council party. He’s operating on crazy right now.
Klaus: Crazy or not, that kind of love never dies.
Season 3, Episode 11, “Our Town.”

Rose (to Jeremy): Stefan is different. His love is pure. He’ll always be good for her. Damon is either the best thing for her or the worst.
Elena (about Stefan): I love him, Damon. He came into my life at a time when I needed someone, and I fell for him instantly. No matter what I feel for you, I never unfell for him.
Damon: Yeah, I get it. Stefan. It’s always gonna be Stefan.

Elena opened her eyes and gasped for air. She sat up and pulled the threads on her body. She climbed out of bed and opened the door.
She covered her ears when she heard dozens of shoes stepping on the floor, people talking as if they were screaming through a megaphone.
“Shut up!” she screamed and a few staff members turned around.
“Are you alright, miss?” a nurse asked. Elena shook her head confused. She leaned against the room. Everything was a blur. “I’ll get a doctor” the nurse and she looked around to find one.
Elena hurried away. She was hungry. She needed to eat something...

There is something that I realized about Damon is 4x18 that I didn’t write about in my previous post…
The fact that Damon starts the episode out by saying:

“Elena without her humanity is a stone cold bitch, and I won’t trust her until we get the old Elena back”.
but then seems to completely forget what he told Stefan when Rebekah has the cure in her hands and asks:
“Go on Damon, Tell me why you want Elena to have the cure”.

This may sound weird but I realized how absolutely beautiful his “moment of weakness” was because HE LOVES ELENA NO MATTER WHAT… human…vampire… humanity…...

The door opened and Derek appeared. He gasped at the blood and the insides lying on the floor.
“What happened?” he asked difficult.
“Exactly what happens when you double cross me” Veronica shrugged. She walked past him to Jeremy’s cell. “Where’s Damon Salvatore?”
“They brought him to a private room, like you asked” Derek answered agitated. “Veronica, you need to call this off. What you’re doing is wrong”
Veronica turned to him. “You’d be very wise to shut up now” she said. She walked through a door at the end of the room, entering another one.
Damon was chained...

Elijah walked through the woods. After some bickering with Rebekah they had agreed it would be safest if one of them, Rebekah, would stay behind and man the headquarters, while the other, Elijah, would go back to Esther’s grave.
He removed the stone and climbed downstairs. Two coffins were still closed. Elijah walked to the coffin that stood on the left side of his. He opened it and revealed the body of his oldest brother Finn.
Elijah slowly removed the dagger. While Finn slowly regained his life force, Elijah walked to the only closed coffin left. He opened it and gazed at the undead body...

Veronica dragged Jeremy downstairs and threw him on the cold floor of a basement. Jeremy screamed and held his leg. As he tried to pull the arrow out, Veronica started pacing up and down.
“You lied to me” she muttered agitated, with a feral look in her eyes. “I asked you straightforward if you were a medium and you lied to me in my face” She walked to Jeremy and looked down on him. “How long has your aunt been spying on me? What does she know?” Jeremy didn’t answer and thus she kicked his wounded leg. Veronica raised her voice above Jeremy’s cries. “How long?” she repeated...

Damon was sitting in the cafeteria of the hospital. He was still angry with Elena. Though angry wasn’t exactly the right word. Defeated was more like it. It felt like the universe was doing everything to keep them apart. Well, Damon meant what he’d said. If Elena died, so would he. He wasn’t going to spend another century and a half alone and hated. Sure, there would be other women begging for his attention, but none of them would be Elena Gilbert.
“Damon?” he heard a weak voice say from behind him. He looked over his shoulder. Elena was standing in the doorway, a blanket over her...

Damon walked through the aisles of the hospital when he bumped into someone.
“Aaah, hot coffee” Bonnie groaned. She had two paper cups of coffee in her hand, only now there was not much left of it.
“What are you doing here?”
“I wanted to see how Elena’s doing. Caroline said she wasn’t feeling very well and then Jeremy told me you brought her here” Bonnie explained a little out of breath. “I thought she might like some coffee, but actually I’m not sure she’s allowed to drink it. Well, I guess it doesn’t really matter anymore”
“No, I mean, what are you doing here?”...

What have you thought about Rebekah's storyline this season?

I feel really lucky as an actor because I get to go a lot of places with Rebekah. I get to explore her vulnerable side, I get to explore the mean girl/catty side of her and there's that inner conflict about whether she wants to be human or a vampire. I just love it all and am so grateful to the writers for giving me so much.

I think you've touched on one of the reasons fans love her so much: Rebekah struggles with being an eternal but having very human desires. Absolutely. That provides a huge amount of inner turmoil for her because...

Damon and Elena were lying on the bed, Elena’s head resting on Damon’s chest. “I believe we’ve been here before” Elena mumbled.
“Hmm” Damon confirmed. “Do you remember what you said back then?”
Elena relegated on the bed and closed her eyes. “I said I wouldn’t leave you, that I would stay with you until the very end”
Elena felt a teardrop on her head, but she didn’t look up. “Promise me you won’t leave now either”
“I promise” Elena whispered and she pinched Damon’s hand. She knew it was a lie. She knew that no matter how much medication she was taking, the...

Bonnie was sitting at the bar, gazing at a candle, trying to lit it with a candle.
“What are you doing?” Veronica asked while she dried glasses.
“Nothing” Bonnie said quick and she looked away from the candle.
“I’ve seen you before. Your Keith’s friend, right?” Veronica acted all innocent. “He told me about you. Said you were such a nice girl. I hate to be the one to bring you the news, but he’s a little messed up in the head, so you might want to keep your distance”
“Really?” Bonnie asked, sipping her water. “Last time I checked you were the one planning...

The sun rays shone through the curtains and illuminated Elena’s face. She slowly opened her eyes and brought her hand to her head. She threw off the sheets and swung her legs over the edge off the bed.
She frowned and rubbed over her arms.
“Are you cold?” Damon asked, who had woken up as well. He couldn’t see Elena’s face and thus couldn’t know that it wasn’t the temperature in the room that was bothering her. She turned around and Damon flashed to her.
“You’re hurting” he realized worried.
Elena nodded. “Yeah, and I’ll be hurting a lot more since we’re training all...

The door of the Boarding House slammed open and Stefan entered the house, with Katherine still in his arms.
“Stefan, are you all right?” Rebekah asked worried as she quickly got up. She walked to him, but Stefan headed for the stairs.
“Where’s Damon?” Elena asked when she didn’t see Damon coming in.
“He…he stayed behind. There was something he had to do” Stefan said vague.
“Stefan” Elena protested unsatisfied.
“He’ll explain everything when he’s back” Stefan replied impatient. He turned to Rebekah. “Could you bring some blood bags?”
Rebekah reluctantly went to...

“They took Katherine?” Stefan exclaimed. He got up from the couch and ironed his hair with both his hands. “Why would they do that? Katherine didn’t have anything to do with Amber or Kelsey”
He turned to Damon. “How could you leave her there?” he asked frustrated.
“I had no choice, Veronica would just attack me again” Damon defended himself.
“Well, we can’t just leave her there” Stefan replied upset.
“Why not?” Rebekah asked smug. “I suggest we let the bitch stay put” Both Damon and Elena ducked at Rebekah, but Stefan was the one grabbing her by her long, blonde...
