The Sims 2 Question

How to I access the sims 2 map while still playing the same family?

I know its a very silly question but I am very new to the sims 2 (sims 3 player) and I find its much harder to play. Any tips?

OH, to travel? You have to buy a car or call for a taxi, click on a sim, tell them to drive somewhere. (You have more places with more expansion packs...)
