A New and Fascinating look at Island Life
By Tinkymel

I recently heard about a show called Harpers Island on CBS. The premiere episode aired on April 9th at 10p.m. I didn’t think much of it. A couple of weeks ago I saw some images from the show on the link, but didn’t know what it was about or if I wanted to take the time to find out. I happened to see a promo for the show a couple days before it aired and decided to give it a try. Alas I forgot and didn’t get to see it the night it aired. Out of curiosity I went to the link Website and looked the show up. I ended up watching the show and loving it. If you are anything like me you have never heard of this show before now.

This show has the gore of a link with all the intrigue of a murder mystery. It puts me in mind of the Agatha Christie book/movie Ten Little Indians, which I loved. While these are the main premises of the show there is a lot of character development going on. The show has a large cast of known and unknown actors. Some of the people you might recognize are Cameron Richarson who was on Point Pleasant, Matt Barr who played the stalker on One Tree Hill, Victor Webster who played Coop on link and was on Mutant X, Chris Gauthier who was in two episodes of link, Jim Beaver who plays Bobby Singer on link, and Katie Cassidy who played the original Ruby on link. With this great cast you would think that the acting would be great, but to be honest it is mediocre. The show makes up for this by being well written, in my opinion. It looks to be a great look at the lives of people stuck in a horrifying situation. Also the location they chose to shoot this show in is beautiful.

The show takes place on Harpers Island off the coast of Seattle Washington. So the show is about a wedding party going to Harpers Island for the big day. It is suppose to be a week of fun and festivities on this beautiful island. You may be asking yourself why go to this island for a wedding, the answer is that the groom (Henry Dunn), the bride (Trish Wellington), and the grooms best friend (Abby Millls) were friends on the island as children. While these three were children a rash of six murders occurred on the island by a man named John Wakefield. This murderer had no ties to the island, he just showed up and started slaughtering people. John hacked people up and hung people from trees.

During this killing spree Abby Mills mother was killed and hung in a tree by John. Abby Mills has not been back to the island in years. Abby left a father who is the Sherriff and a boyfriend behind when she left. As you watch the show you see that there is unfinished business between Abby and the two men, which should get good as the series progresses. Also during the first episode we find that there are two men in the lovely brides life, the groom and a mysterious man named Hunter Jennings (Is this a past lover or someone more horrible?). There is also a creepy little girl that is the flower girl,

Madison, who seems to have a destructive streak and knows too much about things that are going on. At one point Madison says that she knows that people died on the island, but how did she find out. There is a couple on the island name Cal and Chloe who seem to have a very interesting relationship. Chloe seems to be very flirty with other men and Cal seems to not notice. Most of the time Cal treats Chloe like a princess, but on occasion he turns into a mean person towards her. There are many other characters that you don‘t get to know yet, but that seem very intriguing.

In the first episode there are already two murders. I won’t tell you who they are, but I will describe what happens to them as a sneak peek. The first person murdered was tied to the bottom of a boat, and then sucked through the propeller. Can we say sliced and diced. It even had the classic jaws image of the big red cloud in the water. The next victim was hacked in half. It was a decent scene. Due to the graphic nature of the show I believe that this is why CBS chose to put it on so late at night. I am hoping to watch them as they air, but if I don’t the quality of the episodes on line aren’t too bad. Also a bonus is that there aren’t a whole lot of commercials, I think I only saw like 5. Also you can do something else on line while they play because they tell you how long they are.

Now you may be asking yourself what makes this show so unique, well the answer is the Pick the Vitim feature at CBS.com. The link feature gives you a chance to win $1000 dollars by guessing who the victims are going to be. Every time you guess right you get points and entered into a drawing to win the money, I think this is how it works. Now I just like the guessing part and the bragging part. I am not lucky so I won’t win the money, but you might. I thought this feature gives the show a more interactive feel. I like this show a lot and thought I would introduce it to all of you. I hope I did it justice. If you haven’t seen it and would like to watch it you can watch link on line, it‘s only 40 minutes long. You can also get information about the show on the link, which has great pics, images, and character/victim bios.
