In the Twilight Saga, the shape-shifters are different from the Children of the Moon (the werewolves that follow the rules of traditional mythology) in many ways. First of all, the Quileute shape-shifters are a tribe, not necessarily just a lone wolf. The Children of the Moon phase at night, but the Quileute shape-shifters phase by choice at any given time, or when they get really mad. Instead of being bitten, the Quileutes become shape-shifters during the age of puberty, and only if they can trace a direct bloodline back to Taha-Aki, the very first shape-shifter. Well, it depends. In many tales, they are half man half wolf creatures who turn into wolves under the full moon. Under the Twilight series, they turn into wolves when they want to and when they're mad. Normally, they become werewolves because they are bitten, but here it's genetics.
