JJ said that the reason why they had Spock/Uhura in the first place was becuase "Spock was really, really going to need a hug, and Kirk wasn't going to like him yet." So.....uh........wow ! Is it just me or dose that NOT seem like grounds for a lasting relashonship?
JJ said that "In TOS Kirk was the one who kissed Uhura, so we wanted to switch it up this time". That sure seems romantic dosen't it?
Also, if you look at the emontional reaction/chemstiry difference between Spock/Kirk and Spock/Uhura it's VERY different. I know that Spock is soupossed to be Vulcan and reserved and everything, but whenever he's around Kirk he's pouring off emontion left, right, top, bottom, and center, but with Uhura he gives off about as many emontional vibes as a dead rock. Other then showing extermelly well contained shock, reaurring her that he's going to come back from Nero, and strangling Kirk in front of her (i'm not counting that, as Uhura wasn't the one who inspired the emontional outburst) his emontions are like this ----------------------
but with Kirk they're like this (wild zigzag). In short, with Kirk and Spock it's thicker then the great wall of China and more intense then an 4,000 volt elertic shock. with Spock and Uhura it's thinner then a peice of papper and less intense then watered down water. Even when Kirk and Spock are having a three or more way conversation most of the time their focus is on the other, they include others in a sort of, "Oh right, you're here to." kind of way. when Spock and Uhura are talking Spocks' attention is easily diverated and he includes others in the conversation readily. It's like on the bridge when they're talking about alternate worlds. Kirk, Spock and some others are talking, but even though they both know who's asking the questions Kirk and Spcok are talking directly to each other, as if they were the only ones talking. When they are talking one on one, Uhura jumps in with her comment, Spock breifly looks at her, but then directs his comments to Kirk, as if HE suggested it, not Uhura.
Two more things, but they both might be nothing. Spcok Prime says: "You needed each other. I could not deny you the revelation of all that you can acomplish together. Of a friendship that will define you both, in ways that you can not yet realize." Is it just me, or dose that sound like T'hy'la?
Also, at the end of the movie when Spock comes aboard the ship the way he and Kirk look and speak to each other is EXACTLY how TOS Kirk and Spock did. When Spock walks away he keeps looking at Kirk, and Uhura (his soupossed girlfriend) smiles to herself. Now, granted, I may just be seeing somthing that isn't there, but seince we all know that the voice tone and expression that TOS Kirk and Spock gave eachother meant they were totally in love, and 2009 Kirk and Spock give the other IDENTCIAL looks and tones, well, it gets the mind worndering.
I also think Uhura's smile and Spocks' looking direction is a little odd for Spock/Uhura people. I don't know why, but it seems that about three months take place between saving earth and Kirk getting the Enterprise. A LOT can happen in three months, so do you think it's possible that Kirk and Spock became friends or developed deeper feelings, or somthing else? Cuase if Spock and Uhura DIDN"T break up, then don't you think that she would be a little upset/confused by the intameant tone and expression her devoted boyfriend gives to Kirk ? She sure dosn't look confused or upset. In fact, that smile is the one you get when you see two people who you know have the hots for each other flirting, like "OMG THEY'RE SO CUTE". This kind of reminds me of the TOS ep, The Apple. Spock is knocked on his ass by a gaint paper mashei snake head and Kirk instantly runs to his side. There's a few seconds long scene that shoots back to Chekov and a blonde crewoman. Chekov and the woman look at Kirk and Spock, smile at eachother, then go back to watching them. How many times have you either done this or seen another person or charcters in a show do this when it's obvious that two people are in love? Well, that's exactly what Uhura does when she watches Kirk and Spock.
Spock's looking direction may also be telling. Even though he's walking away from him, and passes Uhura, his entire foucus is on Kirk 110%, it never once strays to Uhura, which, IF they are still dating at this point, then naturally he should hold her gaze for a few seconds at the very least. I mean how many times have you seen this behavior from your boy/girl friend? It says, "I may be with you, but i'm more instreated in/attracted to someone else" In fact, this happens a lot throughout the movie. Uhura watches Spock a lot, but Spock NEVER once watches her, looks back at her, or follow her with his eyes. That's all the things that you do with someone you love/are attracted to right? Even after the turbolift kiss and comfort scene he dosen't look back. He walks out like, "Ok, this happened, now let's move on." But with Kirk he's constently watching him, looking back at him, and following him with his eyes. He does this on the bridge, when they go to fight Nero, and when he's annoyed or just plain pissed at him. That's just what you do to someone your attracted to, it's completly subcouncheis, but you still do it. I'm not saying that Spock dosen't have feelings for Uhura at this point in time, but his actions sure say that he finds Kirk more attractive/compeling/whatever then Uhura. (At least from my pov)
And just think about the lighting. Before you say that light color dosn't matter in movies, let me tell you IT DOES. Do you think writers just pick colors randomly and put in whatever looks good? They don't. They do their research and pick the colors based on what they want to convoy. Different colors mean different things accordering to the culture, but in the Amercian culture dark green is linked to jelously (The Green Eyed Monster), while red is linked to attraction or anger (how often is it used to describe sex or love? The expression "seeing red" is used a lot). When Kirk sees Spock and Uhura kissing there's a dark green light directly behind him, and when he and Spock are talking to Nero they're both bathed in red light. Have you noticed there's no red light anywhere in any Spock/Uhura scene? Now, I will say it's possible that my slash goggles were just turned up to high, but if you take into account what those colors normally mean, and the fact that they're present in these spefic scenes, well, you can't really help but wonder.
So, do you think I make any points at all, or do I need help? It should also be noted that I DO NOT hate Uhura, or think that Spcok dosn't have feelings for her. I just don't think they will last. Please don't flame me or start a war with me or any commenters.
