Lex was possessed by Zod, a Kryptonian criminal and is defeated by Clark. Lex is later kidnapped and Lionel pleds Clark to rescue him, though Clark says they don't have much to do with each other. Lex no longer welcomes Clark in his mansion. Clark wasn't invited to Lex and Lana's engagement party but was invited to their wedding because Lex wanted him to see "what he had lost". But when Clark was under the influence of Red Krytonite in Crimson, he crashed the party with Lois' help because she was under influence of a lipstick, and was madly in love with him at the time. He then revealed to everyone in the room that Lana was pregnant. When Moira Sullivan made Chloe confront Lex with a gun, Clark hesitates saving Lex. Clark and Lex later get trapped in an underground tunnel and they have a talk about their relationship. Lex says Clark was the only true friend he ever had, and Clark wonders if maybe he gave up on Lex too soon.

Lionel married Lillian probably sometime in the 1970s and she gave birth to Alexander and Julian. Lillian grew to resent Lionel's ruthless and manipulative behavior and battled poor physical and mental health in the last years of her life. She suffered extreme postpartum depression, and, claiming she didn't want her two sons to fight for their father's attention and affections, smothered the baby to death. Lex found out what Lillian did and lied to his father that he killed Julian by accident. He confessed the truth more than 10 years later after undergoing experimental treatment to recover lost memories.
Having always blamed Lex for Julian's death, Lionel never treated Lex with care or approval; Lex has spent his entire life simultaneously trying not to become his father and trying to gain his acceptance.
