First of all, the thing that sets the Saw franchise apart from other horror films, for me, is the killer which it’s centred around. John/jigsaw has a rich and believable back story. The fact that he was diagnosed with cancer and survived a suicide attempt means that he has clear motive as to why he wants people to appreciate life more. As the story unravels we find that his dreams were shattered in horrific conditions. His subjects are chosen based on the premise that they take the gift of life for granted. Therefore, he's not your typical mental-hospital-escaped or just-felt-like killing crazed killer.

Next I love the non-chronological tendencies of the films. Just when you think a chapter is over, another revelation is made. E.g. we think we see the last of Adam when he's left screaming for his life as the credits roll in Saw; however in Saw 3 we see Amanda go back to him to give him a 'merciful' death. Another example is Amanda’s companionship toward john, we are fooled that it’s them two, but actually there’s another force at work in the form of Hoffman. As the films progress we find that Lawrence’s story does not end at Saw so that added more intrigue.

I have to commend the actors on their portrayal of the characters. If they were one dimensional, I don't think Saw would have the heart or level it is. Take Amanda, I was always hostile toward her but as her passion and emotional layers evolved, I came to love her. Her love for john was so touching and her character is incredible.

Another point is the accompanying 'hello zepp' music created by Charlie Clouser. This has become an iconic piece. Without that particular theme used in the right places, I doubt the scenes would have the same effect on the audience.

Lastly, Saw is incredible in the ways that it changes your outlook on life, as all epic films do.

From Bloody Disgusting:

"Remember when we told you that Lionsgate was planning on remaking the Twilight films? You can go ahead and just replace "Twilight" with "Saw"…

"Sources we trust tell Bloody exclusively that Lionsgate is tinkering with the idea of either making Saw VIII, or rebooting the Saw franchise altogether. It should also be noted that nothing is official, and nothing has been decided. Things are at infant stages at this time, but rest assured, Jigsaw will return.

...

"Even though Saw 3D was dubbed the “final” entry, we’ve been very firm (and public) in our stance that Lionsgate had more up their sleeve.

"Are you ready to play another game?"
